So here’s a quick look at the newly revealed Skoda Rapid Spaceback, which is a shortened version of the existing Rapid hatchback design, and has roughly the same dimensions and proportions of the popular Audi A3.

Skoda hopes that this new midsize car will appeal to the younger car buyer and ‘trendy’ families, as the new model has a sportier look and feel than that of the existing hatchback Rapid model.

The new Skoda Rapid Spaceback features:

  • 135 litre boot capacity
  • Petrol engine version with up to 121bhp
  • 1.6 Diesel engine alternative
  • 5 speed or 7 speed DSG transmission options
  • Diesel model has average C02 emissions of 99g/km

The Spaceback retains a lot of the spacious features of the current hatchback model, so buyers won’t lose rear legroom space in the new model even though the car is 180mm shorter than the previous Rapid model. The boot, although small, also has a dual level floor to boost flexibility.

The Spaceback has optional interior trim upgrades, as well as the option to upgrade exterior elements, including a ‘pro-longed’ rear window which extends the glassed roof area down the rear tailgate. Whatcar? reports suggest that this will give the illusion of tinted glass which runs the full length of the car.

The prices for the new Skoda Rapid Spaceback haven’t been announced yet, but the model will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motorshow this September and is due to appear in showrooms by the end of 2013.
