Every motorist is familiar with the problem of potholes. However, one driver, from Jackson in Mississippi, decided to take matters into his own hands after getting fed up with the craters on his local roads.

Ron Chane, the self-acclaimed ‘Pothole Robin Hood’, stole asphalt from the city to fill in more than 100 potholes in his area. After Chane successfully repaired each pothole, he spray-painted the words ‘citizen fixed’ next to it to proudly mark his achievements.

Fellow city dwellers were thrilled when they learnt about his efforts, with many saluting him for taking matters into his own hands. The local authorities, however, did not look upon his actions with such enthusiasm. Chokwe Lumbaba, the Mayor of Jackson, said:

“We do not accept any use of the city's resources without going through the proper legal channels.”

Ron Chane is proud of his repairs. He told ABC news: “It’s sort of like Robin Hood. Once we saw that people were appreciating what we did we went out and made a goal of fixing 100 potholes. We’ve actually filled 101 potholes, so our mission has been completed.”

According to the local people of Jackson, the roads are so bad that driving on them is like being on a ride at an amusement park. In addition to the pothole issue, the roads also have much larger ‘sinkholes’, which have seen people and cars fall into them in the past.

Chane hopes that, as a result of his repairs, the local council will respond to the fact that the Jackson citizens are unhappy with the current state of the local roads. Chane said: “We’re sending a message that as citizens you have to sometimes take matters into your own hands, in a creative and constructive way.”
