Earlier in the year, Mercedes-Benz asked fans on Facebook to design a ‘golf cart for the future’, offering the winner 2 tickets to golf’s prestigious Open, taking place this year at Muirfield.

The 2013 Open Championship at Muirfield in Scotland, which came to its climax last night, therefore saw the unveiling of the Mercedes-Benz Vision golf cart, a vehicle that reflects the innovative ideas of golfers with the character and technology of a Mercedes-Benz. Car enthusiasts as well as golf fans sent in their designs for a futuristic golf cart following the Facebook promotion and nearly 10,000 people have ‘liked’ the cart design already on Mercedes-Benz’s main Facebook page.

Mercedes-Benz Vision Golf Cart full designThe design for the Vision Golf Cart includes some very hi-tech features.

With a very simple, functional shape, the Vision is a “sculpture on wheels” according to Vice President Design at Daimler AMG, Gorden Wagener. An electric vehicle that features touch screens, a docking station for iPhone/iPad, Bluetooth navigation and plenty of space for two golf bags, the Vision also has a mini refrigerator so a golfer can enjoy a cool beverage while traversing the course.

The golf cart is equipped with tools to communicate with other carts at the same golf course, as well as a golf course map and weather information. The winning design has been enhanced with a diamond grille to give a modern-day face to a Mercedes-Benz. However, some have noticed a striking similarity between the Vision and the Renault Twizy.

Mercedes-Benz has been the official car and official patron of the Open Championship since 2011, and this year supplied 60 Mercedes-Benz vehicles – mainly E-Class models– to shuttle golfers and guests to and from Muirfield Golf Club. The event this year was won by Phil Mickelson (this was the American’s 5th major title), with Henrik Stenson in 2nd place and a 3rd place tie between Ian Poulter, Adam Scott and Lee Westwood.

BMW Golf Cart?

Rumour has it that BMW has a luxury golf cart in development - not a surprise given their heavy involvement and commitment to the sport, through their sponsorship of the PGA championship and well-established Golf Society. Watch this space!
