The new Hyundai Kona Electric is the first ever all-electric compact SUV available on the European market. Following the 2017 release of the innovative Ioniq – available in plug-in, hybrid and fully electric versions – the latest electric offering from Hyundai is highly anticipated. The South Korean manufacturer has promised to deliver 18 electrified models by 2025 with the hydrogen fuel cell-driven Nexo set to arrive next year.

But first comes the Kona Electric which offers the same practicality and stylish design of the conventional car along with a choice of efficient electric powertrains and the latest in connected technology.

What’s the range?

There are two powertrain options available with a 39kWh offering 135ps or a 64kWh offering 204ps. You won’t have to worry about range anxiety, as the top of the line powertrain has a range of up to 300 miles with a maximum speed of 104 mph. And with that efficient electric motor, you’ll be quick off the line with acceleration from 0–62mph in just 7.6 seconds.

How does it look?

The Hyundai Kona Electric retains many of the same styling elements of the conventional version but stands out with its distinctive closed grille which incorporates the charging point, as well as redesigned front bumpers to improve airflow and efficiency. You also get 17-inch alloy wheels and lower side skirts give the car a more rugged look. A range of metallic paints and two-tone roofs are also an optional extra for those who want to personalise their look.

How long does it take to charge?

Fast charging will get you up to 80% battery power in just 1 hour and 15 minutes while a normal overnight charge takes 9 hours and 35 minutes.

What equipment is available?

There are three trim levels available – Premium, SE and Premium SE. Standard equipment includes a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple and Android connectivity, rear parking sensors, automatic lights, climate control and keyless entry. The SE model adds more kit including automatic dimming rear view mirrors, automatic windscreen wipers, 8-inch touchscreen sat nav and a wireless charging pad. The top of the range model includes leather seating, heated steering wheel and head-up display.

There are also a high number of safety features available across the trim levels including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, smart cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring and blind spot detection.

How much does it cost?

Prices for the Kona Electric start from £29,494 and you get £4,500 towards that as part of the government’s plug-in car grant for low emission vehicles.

And you get great value for money as every Kona Electric comes with Hyundai’s incredible 5 year unlimited mileage warranty, 12-year anti-corrosion warranty, five-year annual health check and a roadside assistance package.

What do the reviews say?

Even before its release the Hyundai Kona is garnering praise across the automotive industry having been named the Auto Express Affordable Electric Car of the Year 2018 with the motoring press highlighting its excellent range and outstanding features.

‘…It really stands out because of two things: its range and its pricing. This really is the first car that delivers Tesla-esque range between charging stations, but for less than £30k.’ – Auto Express

‘…After sampling the Kona Electric, we wouldn’t be surprised if Hyundai will soon be considered the next big disrupter in the electric car market. With a real-world range of around 200 miles and a starting price of just £29,495, the entry-level 39kWh ‘small battery’ version of the Kona Electric represents a real threat to the bigger-selling electric cars.’ – What Car?

‘A proper tipping point BEV: genuine 300-mile (ish) range in a small SUV for under £30k. Consider it. 9/10’ – Top Gear

When is the Kona Electric available?
