Legendary footballer Michael Owen, who is retiring from football at the end of this season aged 33, was the victim of a practical joke by his Stoke City teammates – who egged and floured his car.
As a delightful parting gift, Owen’s teammates vandalised his Mercedes C63 AMG, prior to his last ever home game. The Stoke striker awoke on Sunday to see the messy results, and posted on Twitter: “This is what I will miss when I hang up my boots! Looks like I may be delayed getting to the match. #eggs&flour”, along with a picture of his Mercedes C63 AMG looking pretty worse for wear.
Fellow striker Kenwyne Jones posted another picture to Twitter, captioned “Michael Owen’s leaving present.”
Michael Owen is England’s tenth most-capped player, with a national record of 26 competitive goals. He announced his retirement in March, and will leave professional football to be a commentator for sports channel BT Sport and proposes to set up a management company. He was on the bench for the game against Spurs on Sunday, in which Stoke received a 2-1 defeat.
Stoke City midfielders Dean Whitehead and Glenn Whelan, German centre back Robert Huth, striker Jon Walters, tabloid favourite Peter Crouch and winger Matthew Etherington have been listed as possible suspects. Owen, who clearly has payback in his sights, Tweeted: “It’s a long week lads. Revenge is in the air! Chief suspects: Whitehead and Whelan. Huth is a possible too.” Followed by: "Walters is a possible. Others who can't be ruled out: Crouch, Etherington."
Crouch, who received a driving ban last October for speeding, should keep an eye on his £70,000 Range Rover in case it suffers a similarly disgusting fate.
