A small town in the idyllic setting of Aberdeenshire has been found to have more 4x4 vehicles on the roads than the equally affluent London and Chelsea postcodes.
A study by car insurer Admiral has found that there were more than one in four households registered as owning a 4x4 vehicle in the Banchory area: 2% more than previous poll toppers London, Kensington and fellow Aberdeenshire town Turriff.
Also known as the ‘Chelsea Tractor’, 4x4s have become more popular in the Aberdeenshire town due to the high amounts of snowfall in the area during the winter months.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), "Demand has been boosted by adverse weather including two recent severe winters and flooding."
In this rural area of Scotland, there is also a prevailing farming community and therefore plenty of farmers who rely on the sturdier 4-wheel drive vehicles to carry out their day-to-day tasks.
The most popular vehicles within the oil-rich Aberdeenshire town come from British manufacturer Land Rover: the three most popular 4x4s are its Range Rover model followed by the Freelander and Discovery.
