We caught up with Scotland Senior Men's player Chris Clearly to find out what drives him on the court and how he manages to cram all 6’7” of himself inside his Ford Ka.
What first got you interested in Basketball? My high school PE teacher Lindsay Lang was the person that encouraged me to play basketball. I began to play at the age of 16 which was quite a late stage, but luckily I had good coaches that pushed me to be better.
Do you have a piece of lucky kit or pre-game tradition? I actually am not superstitious at all so don't really have any lucky kit or pre-game traditions. I always remain relaxed before games and then begin to focus during the warm up.
Basketball sneaks are a culture in themselves, what is your ultimate sneaker? My ultimate shoe has to be the Nike Zoom Kobe I have from 2006. This was definitely the lightest and most comfortable shoe I have ever worn.
Who is your sporting hero and why?Alex Ferguson has to be my sporting hero. For a manager to remain at the same club for 27 years and win numerous club trophies and individual awards is an incredible achievement.
It’s not long till the European Championships – how intense is the training at the moment? Training is beginning to become more frequent and intense as the competition gets closer. We all know what's required to win the tournament and it all starts with two things; practice and conditioning.
When you’re not stuck on a bus with your team mates what do you drive? At the moment I drive a 2012 Fiat Punto. Previously I had a Ford Ka (You can imagine the jokes as I am 6' 7").
NBA players are known for their pretty opulent cars; what’s your dream car to own? I would have to say a Range Rover Vogue or an Aston Martin (I am a big fan of James Bond Movies).
What is your favourite basketball movie? Coach Carter is a great recent basketball movie, but Classics like 'Eddie' and 'Hoosiers' are two of my favourites.
What is your long term goal in Basketball? Ultimately I would like to represent Scotland in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia.
