Laura Mackay, an Arnold Clark Car & Van Rental employee, has recently had the honour of becoming the first female to fight competitively for the Highland Boxing Academy.
The competition took place in Dean Park Hotel, Kirkcaldy where Laura, who is the Branch Manager at the Inverness Rental branch, won her fight by way of a unanimous decision.
"It was a historic moment for the club," said Academy head coach Liam Foy regarding Mackay’s win. "That’s our first female boxer to record a victory at a competitive contest, which is massive. Laura has done really well to get herself off the mark given she was coming up against a local girl away from home. She was right out of her comfort zone. To have to contend with all of that in your first bout and the pressure of being the club’s first female boxing competitively is hard because everyone was wanting to see how she would do. But she boxed superbly and I was delighted to see Laura win as she’s a real role model for everyone at the club. She takes part in the fitness classes, as well as boxing, while she also does long distance running. We’re really proud to have her as part of the club."
Laura added, “I’ve now had two bouts, winning both and have no plans for any more at the moment as its really hard to find girls with my experience and at my weight category, but I will take any bout that comes along.”
Since her first match, Laura has been victorious once again and continues to train hard in preparation for any future fights.
