The government is bringing in new legislation this year, which will mean that new drivers pay £16 less for a new driving licence, and existing drivers pay £6 less for renewals.

The news comes after Transport Minister, Claire Perry, announced: “The cost of driving can be significant, especially for new drivers. I’m pleased to say that we are planning to save drivers £18m a year by cutting licence fees, thanks to the DVLA making significant savings to their running costs.”

If these plans are pushed through, the savings are set to take effect as of October this year.

Current costs compared to proposed costs after legislation changes

First driving licence

  • Current price – £50
  • Proposed price – £34

Renewing licence after 10 years

  • Current price – £20
  • Proposed price – £14

Driver tachograph cards

  • Current price – £38
  • Proposed price – £32

Whilst £16 may seem like a drop in the ocean for learner drivers who have already forked out a large sum, any saving is welcomed.

The savings mean that the price for a new driving licence will be £34 instead of £50, where a renewal will cost £14 instead of £20 when bought online.

These plans come after the DVLA made great savings since making most of its services available online. These savings seem to be trickling down to the customer now, and we hope that this is just the start of the process of making it cheaper to learn and continue to drive in the UK.
