Arnold Clark is supporting the Scottish Government’s‘Ready for Winter’ campaign, which aims to provide advice on how to prepare for winter in the home, at work, and whilst on the move. The aspect of the campaign that Arnold Clark strongly backs is ensuring that drivers are aware of the dangers of being underprepared when driving during the winter months.
The campaign is the fourth of its kind, and will run from 21st October – 30th November 2014. The Scottish Government have teamed up with the British Red Cross to bring this campaign forward.
The campaign follows research finding that most Scots are still unprepared for severe weather (you’d think we’d have got the hang of it by now!) – in fact; the vast majority of Scots believe that an ice scraper and some de-icer are perfectly adequate for getting through the winter. (Not adequate.)
The campaign will offer information and simple advice to individuals and families about the risks of not preparing for winter.
The big message is ‘don’t wait until it happens’ – doing a few small things now could make your life a whole lot easier when the bad weather comes. And, let's face it, it will come.
When you’re out driving in bad weather, it is important to remember a few handy tips and tricks to ensure you have as smooth a drive as possible. Make sure you:
- Check the weather forecast and road conditions
- Consider whether you absolutely need to travel, or if you can wait until the weather clears
- Consider alternative routes
- Consider alternative modes of transport
- Allow extra time for your journey
- Make sure your car is ready for a journey in poor weather (check out our Winter Driver’s Guide for tips on how to prepare your car)
- Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged
- Set your car radio to auto travel bulletins
- Tell someone your destination and expected time of arrival
- Consider fitting winter tyres to your vehicle
