A record-breaking 462,517 new cars were registered last month, making September 2015 the biggest month on record for new car sales.
September has always been one of the busiest months as a result of new number plates, but this year saw a staggering 8.6% increase on last year’s figures.
Total car registrations for 2015 so far are the highest they have been since 2004.
All sectors have enjoyed an increase in new car registrations, including private, fleet and business sales.
All types of fuel also saw an increase. Petrol cars are still strides ahead of diesel, with a growth of 12.3%, compared to 4.1% respectively. However, there has been a huge increase in alternatively fuelled vehicles, which were up by 21.7%.

Arnold Clark Sales Director, Scott Willis, said: ‘The Group has enjoyed a successful September this year, with new car sales significantly ahead of last year.
Biggest ever September for Kia
Kia reported their best ever September sales figures with 13,980 new car sales during the month. Almost 6,000 of these new sales are attributable to the Kia Sportage, the manufacturer’s best performing brand.
Vauxhall leads the way in private buyer sales
Vauxhall won the private buyer race, selling more cars and vans than any other manufacturer, with 43,848 new car sales in September alone.
The Mokka, Zafira and Corsa are all doing their bit to drive sales for the manufacturer.
Ford reaches 70,000 UK sales
Ford is the UK market leader in total vehicle, car and commercial vehicle sales. The manufacturer did particularly well with commercial sales, which are reported as up by 19.4%.
The Ford Fiesta is the UK bestseller, and the Transit Custom and Transit are first and second in CV sales.
