Arnold Clark branches have been home to some impressive vehicles recently including Sir Arnold’s classic car collection and the VW XL1. Now it’s Rutherglen Ford/Fiat/Abarth’s turn as they currently have an Abarth 695 gracing their showroom.
The T-Jet Biposto 3dr has a top speed of 143mph and can accelerate from 0–60mph in a swift 5.9 seconds, bringing racetrack thrill to the humble streets. As Carlo Abarth put it himself, he liked to spend ‘Sunday on the track and Monday in the office’ so the Biposto is a reflection of his auto ideals.
The 695 clearly exemplifies that looks can be deceiving. With modest bodywork similar to the charming Fiat 500, the Biposto’s impressive velocity is an unexpected surprise. Rather than the vibrant colours associated with stereotypical racecars, Abarth has chosen a satin, gunmetal grey to achieve a polished yet striking finish.
The interior is particularly impressive, featuring a mix of premium materials such as leather and suede and low racing seats. The flashes of titanium and bold red provide a powerful break from the black, making for a captivating cabin. However don’t expect any gadgetry – Abarth has saved on 38kgs by getting rid of rear seats, standard door inserts, the air conditioning unit and radio system. A stripped back interior is the price you need to pay for a speedy set of wheels!
The Abarth brand, founded by Carlo Abarth in Bologna, has a rich history. The company logo – a Scorpion – was chosen due to Carlo’s astrological sign. Carlo was also a highly successful motorcycle racer and won at the Grand Prix and on an international level. Only 133 695s have been produced in the UK ahead of global release – paying homage to Abarth’s racing heritage as this is the number of records it currently holds.
