Saloon interior
There are three trim levels initially at first release and the entry-level grade 2 version comes equipped with sat nav, steering wheel-mounted controls, cruise control, electrically heated folding mirrors and reversing camera.
Comfort has been given a boost with new, stiffer seat frames and decreased weight meaning that passengers don’t feel as many vehicle vibrations when travelling. NVH (Noise, vibration and harshness) has also been decreased thanks to additional sound-proofing and acoustic dampening. Zonal heating means that rear passengers can enjoy their own heating system.
There are also more luxurious trim materials than the previous model with the option of leather upholstery.
Second generation
Space has been increased all-round thanks to the enlarged dimensions of an additional 10mm on the wheelbase, 25mm overall width and 10mm on the height giving more head and legroom for the driver and passengers. The boot space has grown from 505 litres to 510 litres as well as an increase in width to the opening which improves loading.
Externally there are 17-inch alloy wheels and body-coloured door handles and mirrors. The body has been improved aerodynamically (cd0.29 instead of 0.3) and the weight has been decreased by 8.6kg.
Driver controls have been improved with a dual-zone system, upper display zone and a lower control zone. There are fewer switches yet increased functionality with the addition of the touch screen.
Technology
Kia's increased technology means enhanced convenience, comfort and safety. As standard all models are fitted with a touch-screen sat nav with reversing camera, Bluetooth mobile connectivity and audio streaming.
There are plenty of options to add if technology is your thing, including blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert, speed limit information and lane keep assist.
According to Kia the Optima is the first in its class to offer wireless phone charging and there are front and rear USB ports as standard in all models, essential for charging devices on the go.
The new Optima is the first Kia to feature a Harmon Kardon™ Premium audio system, that has been specifically designed for this model, with ten strategically mounted speakers and an 11-channel, 590-watt digital amplifier.
Economy and emission improvements
The Intelligent Stop & Go stop-start engine comes as standard on all trim levels. Reducing emissions and fuel consumption when the vehicle is stationary. The 1.7-litre turbodiesel now meets EU6 emissions regulations with its 139bhp at 4,000rpm.
Lower emissions also mean lower VED thanks to the improvements of C02 emissions and economy of up to 25 percent. Also meaning that if chosen for business BIK tax will be reduced compared to the first generation Optima.
Safety
Advanced safety features including a modified body shell and programmed side and rear crumple zones. The new Optima is 50 per cent stiffer than the previous model, because of the increased use of advanced, high-strength steel. There is an increased number of airbags with twin front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger and two full-length side curtain airbags as well as active collision-avoidance systems.
A number of accident prevention features have been included, such as anti-lock brakes with electric brake-force and brake assist, as well as electronic stability control and vehicle stability management to prevent the car from skidding on corners. Other features include seatbelt pre-tensioners, speed-sensing automatic door locks and emergency stop signalling.
Look out for GT, GT-line and estate versions as well as a plug-in hybrid in 2016.
