We caught up with Rory MacKenzie, a former soldier, Atlantic rower and motivational speaker, to talk about everything from overcoming adversity to his favourite tunes to play in the car.
Who inspired you growing up?
I would have to say it was my father. He was always so calm, cool and collected and incredibly knowledgeable about many different subjects. I strive to be more like him.
What has helped you stay positive during difficult times?
Knowing that someone else is having a harder time than I may be. It really is all about perspective. Having one leg is tough but imagine missing both your legs. So I'm grateful for only the one. You need to keep perspective!
You’re an experienced public speaker. What advice would you give to someone who may not be so confident?
A huge proportion of people are intimidated by public speaking. So my advice is, just fake it – but it does help if you know the subject you are talking about.
I always used to walk with my head down when I was in my teens and a girlfriend put her hand under my chin and said to me: ‘Always walk with your chin parallel to the ground’. Holding your head high will instill confidence in you and make you feel more proud of yourself.
You rowed across the Atlantic. Can you share with us a low point and a high point?
My low point was when I had to cut shrapnel (left over from Basra) out of my right buttock cheek using a scalpel and arterial forceps.
My high point was realising how much time we waste day-to-day and how much we could actually accomplish if we decided use our time better.
What’s involved in your daily fitness routine?
I row an ergo (indoor rower) about 3 - 4 times a week for about 45 minutes, and lift weights. It's a constant battle to fight the fat!
What’s your next big challenge?
My next challenge is Ireland 360. In August, four of us will circumnavigate Ireland on personal watercrafts made by Sea-Doo. I hope to set a world record as the first one-legged chap to do it.
How has the Motability scheme helped you?
Motability has been amazing! They are so helpful and accommodating and the staff are always so friendly when I've needed to call in with a question. I learnt to drive at the age of 28 and it was in a Motability car!
What is your favourite car?
It has to be my car – a Mercedes-Benz CLA220 AMG. But if I had all the money in the world it would be the Mercedes SLS.
What are your favourite songs to listen to on road trips?
I enjoy classical music because it’s very chilled, or else Pearl Jam.
What advice would you give to someone with limited mobility who is looking to get into sport?
You should try everything, as you never know what you might be good at. Never be embarrassed to try new things. Try absolutely everything!
