Last week CEO at Tesla, Elon Musk, announced that the company planned to open up their patent technology portfolio in the interests of creating an environment of open innovation with electric vehicle technology.
Since the announcement, BMW and Nissan have expressed interest in collaborating with Tesla in order to expand the electric vehicle charging network that Tesla have in place across the U.S. globally.
Despite the two companies traditionally being seen as main competitors for Tesla, Musk announced: “Our true competition is not the small trickle of non-Tesla electric cars being produced, but rather the enormous flood of gasoline cars pouring out of the world’s factories every day.”
It is clear that Musk’s main aim is to improve the success of electric cars in general, rather than just for Tesla. The bold move has seen Tesla’s stock price increase by 6%; looks like Musk is on to a winner!
Some consumers worry about running out of charge too far from home, but if this technology progresses successfully, we could see charging stations taking over gas stations– a positive thought, for sure! What are your thoughts on the future of electric cars?
