First and foremost, if you are involved in a car accident, you must put your personal safety first and if possible record as much information as you can.
Be prepared
It is wise to keep an accident pack in your car containing:
- Paper and pen,
- First aid kit and
- Disposable camera.
Stay safe
- Stay calm
- Ensure the scene is safe
- Switch off all engines
- Switch on hazard warning lights
- Call the emergency services if necessary
- Get out of your car and stay clear of traffic. If your accident occurs on the motorway, wait for help on the embankment.
- If you are a woman on your own or you have children with you, inform the recovery service, as you will be a priority.
Record the following information
- Date and time of the accident
- Contact details of the other driver involved i.e. name, address and telephone number.
- Other vehicle details i.e. make, model, colour, vehicle registration.
- Other driver’s insurance details
- Road markings and driving conditions e.g. give way sign, rain etc.
- Any comments of fault made by the other driver
- Brief outline of what happened and sketch of the road layout
Take photos
Take photos of the accident site and the surrounding area with your mobile phone or camera. This can help in the event of any disputes arising.
