Celebrate Earth Day by visiting the Arnold Clark Innovation Centre

To celebrate Earth Day, we’re making a donation to the Friends of the Earth charity for every person that visits one of the Arnold Clark Innovation Centres on Saturday 22nd April.

Earth Day is a global event which is held every year on 22nd April to raise awareness and show support for environmental protection.

And in support of the event, we will donate £10 to Friends of the Earth, an environmental campaigning community dedicated to the wellbeing and protection of the world, for every person that visits the Innovation Centre on Saturday.

Everyone knows how important alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) are to our environmental future, and we’ve designed our Innovation Centres to answer any potential questions motorists may have about the future of transport.

Arnold Clark’s commitment to a net zero carbon future resulted in the company investing over £5 million into the creation of our first non-retail showroom in Glasgow’s West End, while our second Innovation Centre opened in Stafford last year.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

At our Innovation Centres in Glasgow and Stafford, visitors can learn more about the benefits of switching to electric as well as test-drive a wide range of electric vehicles.

If you’re thinking about making the switch to electric, a team of alternative fuel experts, known as ‘innovation geniuses’, will be on hand at the Stafford Innovation Centre to answer any of your burning questions.

They can provide clarity on areas such as range anxiety, charging processes, the latest government grants and much more.

For those thinking of switching their company fleet to AFVs, a business specialist will also be on site to help them make the most informed choice.

Arnold Clark is also delighted to have recently launched SENSE, our new sustainability strategy that aims to transform our business into a driver of the future of sustainable personal mobility and includes reducing our greenhouse gas emissions in line with the UK's climate change targets.

Arnold Clark announce £23 million investment in electric vehicle charging network

Arnold Clark has announced plans to install over 500 electric vehicle chargers across the UK in an investment worth £23 million.

Arnold Clark customers will have access to the 'Arnold Clark Charge' network, which will be available to book safely and securely on a 24/7 basis.

Eight rapid chargers, with the ability to charge up to 150kW, will be installed at larger Arnold Clark branches, with four to six rapid chargers installed at smaller branches.

Eddie Hawthorne, Chief Executive and Group Managing Director of Arnold Clark, commented: 'Our customers won't have any range anxiety when dealing with Arnold Clark because we will have a charging solution for them at our branches.

'Arnold Clark Charge is our £23 million infrastructural investment in electric vehicle charging. We're going to have over 500 fast chargers across our network, from Inverness to Southampton, from Liverpool to Milton Keynes.

'These chargers are for Arnold Clark customers and their unique selling point is that they're bookable, available 24/7 and totally secure, while there will be preferential rates for our customers.

'It will probably make us one of the largest independent charging infrastructural suppliers in the UK when we have the network fully installed by the end of the year.'

Meanwhile, Arnold Clark is also delighted to announce the acquisition of Scottish-based electric vehicle charge point installers, Bumblebee.

From solar powered to smart home wall chargers, Bumblebee have the ability to install every OZEV-approved charge point on the UK market.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

As the UK’s largest network of electric car charge point specialists and installers, Bumblebee can provide chargers from industry-leading manufacturers such as Wallbox, Andersen and MyEnergi.

Mr Hawthorne added: 'Last month we bought Bumblebee, an installer of electric vehicle chargers for homes and businesses, and we're delighted to welcome them to the Arnold Clark family.

'We want to help our customers buy an electric vehicle, but we also want to help them to understand what owning, charging and driving an electric vehicle is all about. Bumblebee is part of that strategy and we're going to be supplying customers with our own EV chargers.

'We have some great products coming from Bumblebee, including the world's first modular EV charging point, so keep your eyes peeled for more announcements.'

Vauxhall Grandland GSe family crossover gets 296bhp

$

I know, Vauxhall’s latest move might just have you scratching your head a bit.

But for anyone who has ever wanted a performance-focused family-friendly crossover, I have good news. Vauxhall has given its Grandland the GSe treatment.

The latest sporty model now sits alongside the new Astra and Astra Sports Tourer GSe hot plug-in hybrids. Utilising the same plug-in hybrid technology as its siblings, the Grandland GSe also benefits from more power, plus a revised chassis set up. Oh, and it also gets a new paint job.

Building on the 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged four-cylinder petrol already found in the GS Line and Ultimate versions of the current Grandland PHEV, the GSe also gains two electric motors, one on each axle. The result? Four-wheel drive.

Power also takes a hike, up from 222bhp to 296bhp. Meaning the family crossover is now capable of 0-62mph in just 6.1secs, and a top speed of 146mph.

No details have been released officially yet regarding the battery pack slotted into the Grandland GSe, but it’s probably safe to assume it’s the same 12.4kWh unit found in the Astra GSe. What we do know is the plug-in hybrid Grandland GSe will be capable of reaching a top speed of 84mph in electric-only mode. It’s also likely the pure-electric range will drop slightly from the standard car’s 39-mile range.

Vauxhall has published provisional WLTP efficiency data, stating the Grandland GSe will be capable of up to 217mpg — no, don’t expect that in ‘real world’ driving — with CO2 emissions from 29g/km. Also worth highlighting that if it does use the same battery as the Astra GSe, drivers should expect to take just under two hours to top up using a 7kW charger.

As for looks, the newcomer will mirror many of the styling cues first seen on the Astra GSe, including plenty of bespoke GSe badging. It also gets 19-inch alloys inspired by the Manta GSe concept, plus a black bonnet will be available as an option. The cabin also benefits from Alcantara-trimmed sports seats.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

The Grandland GSe will go on sale from Arnold Clark Vauxhall dealerships in early 2023, with first deliveries scheduled for Spring.

As for prices? Vauxhall has yet to confirm what the new Grandland GSe will cost. But given it will be the range-topping model, and allied to the fact the current Grandland Ultimate plug-in hybrid starts from £41,010, don’t be surprised if the GSe nudges closer to the £50,000 mark.

The Alpine San Remo 73: celebrating one of sporting history’s highlights

The sports car manufacturer Alpine have had an illustrious career, but 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of one of the brands greatest achievements: victory at the 1973 Sanremo Rally as part of the inaugural World Rally Championship season.

It was this iconic victory with legendary French driver Jean-Luc Thérier that cemented the Alpine A110’s top spot in the very first World Rally Season.

To celebrate this amazing anniversary, Alpine are producing 200 very special limited-edition models, the Alpine A110 San Remo 73. Sporting a distinctive look that pays homage to the championship winning 1973 A110, the Alpine San Remo 73 offers an incredible driving experience and is available to order now, priced at £77,990.

The Alpine A110 San Remo 73

Exterior

In line with the sparkling achievement of winning the very first World Rally Championship, the San Remo 73 makes a strong statement from the moment it arrives with the iconic rally colours on full display. The main body is painted Caddy Blue, with a red-tinted carbon roof and white and black stripe decals along the doors. The 1973 rally car originally sported some rather eye-catching orange wheels, sadly these haven’t been repeated in the San Remo 73. Instead, it boasts some impressive Grand Prix Brilliant Blanc wheels that have been equipped with Anthracite painted Brembo callipers.

Interior

The interior of the San Remo is a little more subdued compared to bright splash of colour of the exterior, but still oozes quality and bespoke craftmanship. There’s a repeat of the black and white decal on the inside door panels (though much smaller of course), and the bucket seats are velvety black with beautiful grey stitching. They are also tagged with ’73 World Champion’, just in case anyone was wondering about the San Remo’s inspiration. To finish it off, every San Remo 73 sports a custom numbered plaque in the centre console, letting you know exactly which of the 200 San Remo 73s you own.

Engine

Of course, given the sporting prestige that it comes from, you would expect the engine to have a bit of bite to it. Well, you’ll be happy to know that Alpine deliver in this regard as well, equipping the San Remo 73 with the same engine as the speedy A 110 S. This is a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder turbo, cranking out 300 horsepower and an estimated 0-62 time of 4.2 seconds. There will only be one gearbox on offer, a dual-clutch automatic, and of course it will be rear-wheel drive, much like the 1973 A110 it pays homage to.

The Sanremo Rally ‘73

Now, you may be intrigued by this limited-edition Alpine, but find yourself asking, ‘Why are Alpine honouring a race from 50 years ago?’

The simple answer is that the 1973 Sanremo Rally wasn’t just an amazing victory for Alpine, it was one of the most jaw-dropping moments in rally history; a moment that was dominated by Alpine’s untouchable performance.

The World Rally Championship in 1973 marked the most prestigious rally championship that continues to this day, pushing the envelope of rally excellence and helping manufacturers innovate in bold and exciting ways.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

When the WRC started, no one could have expected it would be with such a dominating performance by one of the competing manufacturers. From the very first race, Alpine took centre stage and dictated the pace for the entire championship. With multiple first place positions, consistently high placings, and the wonderful talents of Jean-Luc Thérier and Jacque Jaubert (another Alpine driver) leading the charge, Alpine finished the season with 147 points, nearly double the points of second place, held by Fiat with 84 points.

So, in a season of consistent highlights, why focus on the Sanremo race in particular? Well, it was the first place win at Sanremo that ensured Alpine’s number one finish for the season. Only ten races into the season, there was now no physical way for any other competitor to overtake Alpine. Effectively, winning at Sanremo was winning the entire championship. It was a performance that has never been repeated.

No wonder Alpine are so excited to celebrate its anniversary!

The best hatchbacks for 2023

$

Crossover SUVs might be big sellers at the moment, but the trusty five-door hatchback never goes out of style.

Hatchbacks are versatile, fun to drive and come with all the space and connectivity you could wish for.

Here, we look at some of best and most popular hatchback models on the market this year.

Vauxhall Astra

While the Vauxhall Astra might be one of the most popular cars in the UK, it also remains one of the most economical hatchbacks.

We are now on to the eighth-generation Astra and it looks sharper than ever. Stretching across the front, making the Astra look even wider, the Vizor front end seamlessly integrates technologies such as the ultra-slim IntelliLux LED headlamps and the front camera of the Intelli-Vision parking camera.

Inside, Vauxhall has focused on detoxing the interior compared to its previous models – making it simple and intuitive to use. Vauxhall’s Pure Panel digital interface dominates the interior, with all models from launch featuring a 10-inch driver instrument cluster and a 10-inch digital touchscreen with satellite navigation as standard.

The Plug-in HYBRID-e variant combines Vauxhall’s 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 12.4 kWh battery for a power output of 180PS, with a more powerful, 225PS Plug-in Hybrid Electric variant also available. Both models are capable of up to 35 miles (WLTP) of electric range – enough to cover 85 per cent of all typical journeys. With emissions as low as 24g/km CO2, Astra is ideal for both fleets and private buyers looking to save on running costs.

A fully-electric Astra is set to be released this year.

A humble hatchback that offers plenty in both looks, tech, and performance, the Peugeot 308 retains the Gallic flair and panache of its forebears, with some cool new touches, like its dynamic new Peugeot lion badge which is more reminiscent of a modern sports franchise, and smart chrome details streaking off from it.

The Peugeot 308 has excellent fuel economy across the range, with most delivering upwards of 50mpg, and the Blue HDi 100 version claiming up to 65mpg. The 308 interior is minimalist but considered, retaining the smaller, sporty i-Cockpit steering wheel, which gives the driver more room to manage the user-friendly touchscreen controls, with the infotainment system housing both sat nav and smartphone mirroring for Apple and Android technology. And with its piercing ‘cat’s eye’ LED lighting guiding drivers through murky Alpine pass or winding coastal road, the array of tech and aesthetic artistry on show makes the 308 a magic little number.

Kia Ceed

First launched in 2021, the new Ceed range offers buyers a fully comprehensive choice of powertrain configurations, including mild-hybrid diesel engines, with horsepower ranging from 99bhp to 201bhp. You can also pick from a choice of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, the 1.0- and 1.5-litre petrol and the 1.6-litre diesel powertrains.

From the outside, the exterior has been rejuvenated, with a completely redesigned front end, which features Kia's new logo, a simplified graphic of the company name.

The iconic tiger-nose grille, which makes the Ceed a recognisable Kia, is upgraded to a black gloss finish with satin chrome upper and lower wing-shaped garnish for a sleek and modern appearance. To the sides, two large side air intakes shoot through the front bumper creating the sportier look. The ‘wing’ inspired theme repeats in other elements of the front redesign, such as the satin chrome trim on the lower air intake grille and the sweeping side garnish which extends into the front wheel arch.

Ford Focus

The Ford Focus has long been considered the ‘everyday hero’ for the general public. Drivers young and old choose the trusty hatchback to take them where they need to go, and car enthusiasts lap up the style and power of the Focus ST.

The recently refreshed Ford Focus features a new, sculpted bumper and front grille design. The iconic blue oval Ford badge has also been relocated to the front of the grille for a more prominent position.

Like many competitors, LED lights now come as standard on all Focus models. The headlights have been slimmed down, which gives the whole front of the car an edgier look. There’s also integrated fog lights with cornering lights enabled. The taillights have been darkened to match the new design.

Inside, drivers can benefit from the use of Ford’s SYNC 4 system featuring a 13.2-inch HD touchscreen. This interface replaces not only the infotainment system, but also climate control button, as these are now integrated into the one whole package. Drivers and passengers can easily listen to their own music through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and have no need to fear getting lost thanks to its navigation system.

Skoda Octavia

Given a look in early 2020, the Skoda Octavia is longer and wider than its predecessor and even has a larger boot.

The new interior combines an excellent amount of space and outstanding functionality with high-quality materials and clever details. Meanwhile, innovative connectivity and new assistance systems raise the comfort and safety of the brand.

New and soft-touch materials lend the interior a premium look, while the new LED ambient lighting indirectly illuminates the front doors, dashboard and footwells.

For the first time in the Octavia, Ergo seats are available as an option and offer an electric massage function.

Mercedes‑Benz A‑Class

The new Mercedes‑Benz A‑Class brings something special to the compact segment and offers customers class for every day.

Even from the front, the new A‑Class conveys power and dynamism. The front view is dominated by the forward-sloping bonnet with its two power bulges and steep 'shark nose', the redesigned radiator grille with star pattern and the flat headlamps, available as an option in an LED variant. The sporty character is underlined by externally flush wheels with four additional rim designs in sizes up to 19 inches, including optional high-gloss black painted light-alloy wheels in multi-spoke design and with a high-gloss rim flange for the AMG Line.

Even in the base variant of the new A‑Class, Mercedes‑Benz offers a high-quality comfort, while a new, dark carbon-fibre look trim element further enhances both the instrument panel and the doors.

BMW 1 Series

Now in its third generation, the BMW 1 Series features a dynamic design, roomier interior, a raft of cutting-edge technologies as well as BMW’s trademark agility and superior performance.

There have been a number of design changes including a new standard LED headlight arrangement, a more wedged shaped silhouette and a pronounced ‘shark nose’. At the front, the BMW kidney grille is larger and, for the first time in this model range, the kidneys merge in the middle.

The interior has more space and features high-quality materials throughout, driver-focused controls and innovative details, such as backlit trim strips.

Also, for the first time a panoramic roof is available as an option for the BMW 1 Series.

Mini Hatch

In 2021, the exterior of the Mini Hatch was refreshed with even more attention now focussed on the car’s central design features. The front-view is dominated by a larger radiator grille and its black, hexagonal surround, and the hallmark round Mini headlights. The position lights have been replaced by vertical air inlets to optimise aerodynamics and the central bumper strip is now in body colour, rather than black. The wheel arch has new contours, the side indicators have been redesigned to feature LED technology and at the back of the car, the fog light is now integrated into the rear apron as a narrow LED unit.

On the inside, an 8.8-inch colour touchscreen display and piano black high-gloss surface are now standard and the audio control unit and function buttons for hazard warning lights and driver assistance systems are integrated more harmoniously into the circular control unit.

Meanwhile, the operating system of the Mini Hatch is now more advanced than ever before thanks to a new graphics display and further developed options for selecting and controlling the vehicle functions, audio system, hands-free telephone system, navigation and apps. The screen display with symbols and text on new colour backgrounds has a modern look and menu items are now displayed as "live widgets" to be called up by swiping the touchscreen. Advanced connectivity features, audio and navigation features are available in optional packs, which have also been extended.

MG4 EV

MG is positioning itself as an electric car manufacturer for the masses. The automaker has already given us the ZS and MG5, which are both reasonably priced.

The MG4 hatchback, though, is built on a brand-new platform and it certainly looks the part. Few cars could lay claim to taking inspiration from a Lamborghini Urus, but the MG4’s front end, with its slope, jagged headlights and aggressive air intakes, looks like MG’s designers have based it on Lambo’s iconic appearance.

Admittedly the rear looks nothing like a Urus, and its shapeliness won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but it at least has personality and a cool lightbar running along the width of the boot.

Prices start from just a fiver under £26,000, which is inexpensive by electric car standards – for comparison, it’s cheaper than the Vauxhall Corsa-e.

With battery capacities from 51kWh to 64kWh, the MG4 EV Standard Range is capable of 218 miles on the WLTP cycle, with Long Range SE and Trophy models capable of 281 miles and 270 miles respectively.

The 64kWh battery is also capable of recharging at up to 135kW, meaning a charge time of only 35 minutes from 10% - 80% using a 150kW DC rapid charger.

The MG4 EV carries MG’s trademark seven-year/80,000-mile warranty as standard, which remains one of the longest fully-transferable warranties in its class.

Best new cars for 2023: combustion-engined cars and SUVs

$

0

The automotive industry may be going electric, but that doesn't mean there aren't some stunning traditional combustion-engine cars and SUVs entering the market this year.

In this article, we look at some of the best new cars which will make their debut in Arnold Clark showrooms across the country in 2023.

Check out our list below and let us know which one you're most looking forward to.

BMW 5 Series — October 2023

BMW’s all-new 5 Series will be launched with a comprehensive selection of powertrains, including internal combustion, PHEV and full-EV.

BMW says the eighth generation of the large executive saloon will be its most advanced and ambitious yet. As in previous years, the plug-in versions will be available with either 2.0-litre four-cylinder (530e) or 3.0-litre straight-six (545e) petrol engines. Opt for the pure diesel or petrol models, and you’ll find they benefit from 48V mild-hybrid tech to deliver efficiency and performance gains. M versions of both the ICE and EV models will also be added to the range.

Inside the comfortable and stylish cabin, there will be ample space for four adults in comfort. You can also expect to see a new raft of tech, infotainment and safety features introduced across the range.

*Price: From £42,000 (est.) *

BMW M3 Touring — Mid-2023

This is one of the most anticipated ICE cars of the year: the first-ever BMW M3 Touring. We know that German giants and rivals Mercedes-Benz and Audi have been building estate versions of their hot saloons for a number of years. But while BMW has tried the package in the form of the M5 estate, this is the first official M3 Touring.

So, what do you get? Under the bonnet has been squeezed a 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six, delivering 503bhp and 479lb/ft through all four wheels, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 3.6secs (0.2s slower than the Mercedes AMG C63 estate, but more importantly, only 0.1secs slower than the BMW M3 saloon). Official fuel consumption? An entirely acceptable, and official, 27.2-28mpg. Well, acceptable when you factor in the blistering performance.

And if you do have to carry stuff in the estate boot space, you’ll be pleased to know you have 500 litres of space with the rear seats up, jumping to 1,510-litres with them folded.

Price: £80,550

BMW XM — Available to order now

Ok, take a deep breath. The XM is a hulking SUV launched to celebrate 50 years of BMW’s Motorsport division. Yes, that was last year, and though the XM officially went on sale last November, first deliveries are scheduled to start in the first half of this year.

Powered by its not insignificant 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, mated to a 25kWh battery and an electric motor to boost performance and efficiency, the combined power pack pumps out 644bhp and 800Nm of torque. Just as well, then, that all that power is channelled through four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Performance? BMW claims the XM will accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph. Tick the ‘M Driver’s Package’ on the options sheet and you can raise this further to 168mph. That pleasure will also cost you £2,500.

Average fuel consumption for the XM stands at 188.3mpg and it can also drive in electric-only mode, allowing for up to 55 miles of pure-electric driving from the 25.7kWh battery. BMW also claims the XM emits 35g/km of CO2 on a combined cycle.

Price: From £145,885

Mercedes-Benz CLE — Late 2023

The CLE is a new badge in the Mercedes-Benz range. Essentially replacing both the C and E-Class coupés and convertibles, the two-door model also allows Mercedes-Benz to streamline the complexity of its product portfolio.

Targeting rivals such as the Audi A5 and BMW 4 Series, the CLE is a four-seater which will be built on the company’s MRA2 architecture. Buyers will be able to choose from a number of turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines, although six-cylinder power would be compatible with the platform for high-power AMG versions. It’s unlikely a four-door coupé version of the CLE will be added to the range.

Price: From £45,000 (estimated)

Mercedes-AMG GT — 2023

The 2023 AMG GT, the second-generation of Mercedes-Benz’ two-door flagship which will take the performance battle to the Porsche 911, will be powered by the company’s 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine. The twin-turbocharged unit is expected to offer a similar output as in the SL, with 469bhp in a new GT 53 model and 577bhp in the successor to the GT 63.

In time, more powerful models will be rolled out in the AMG GT range, including the GT R, GT GT3 and range-topping GT Black Series.

It’s understood Mercedes-Benz is also working on a new GT 63 S E-Performance model. This will be powered by the same petrol-electric plug-in hybrid drivetrain as the recently introduced GT 63 S E-Performance 4-door coupé. That package mates the GT 63’s V8 engine with an electric motor mounted on the rear axle. The combo thrusts out 831bhp and up to 1084lb/ft on Overboost.

Price: From £165,000 (estimated)

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

Mini Hatch — 2023

We know for a fact the next-generation MINI Hatch will be unveiled this year. But the reality is, at the moment, that’s about the only fact we have. MINI boffins are remaining incredibly tight-lipped about the new model. The only official glimpse we’ve had of the car is during cold weather testing when it was pictured with Oliver Heilmer, Head of MINI Design.

Sure, we know there will be internal combustion-engine models, along with a new all-electric version (we’ve covered the details of that in our EV feature). And while we know mild-hybrid assistance is a certainty in the ICE models, we don’t know exactly what engines MINI will be fitting.

It’s also fair to assume MINI Cooper, and the faster MINI Cooper S variants are likely to launch the new range when it finally appears in production form.

As for styling? The 2023 MINI Hatch is likely to be fitted with the protruding rear light design which, until now has been the unique domain of the MINI Electric. The tapering roofline in the images also appears to narrow in a more pronounced way towards the rear of the car. Oh! And the 2023 MINI will be smaller than the model it replaces, as the company sees the MINI returning more towards its roots.

Glasgow's Low Emission Zone - what you need to know

$
0
0

Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone (LEZ) will soon come into force as the Scottish Government aims to address the higher levels of pollution in the city.

All vehicles entering the city centre zone area will need to meet the less-polluting emission standards or face a penalty charge.

In a bid to battle climate change, the Scottish Government want to promote clean air in towns and cities across the country.

They believe supporting more sustainable and active travel will help Scotland meet its target of reaching net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2045.

What is a Low Emission Zone or Ultra-low Emission Zones?

More commonly known as LEZs, Low Emission Zones, or Ultra Low Emissions Zones (ULEZ), set vehicle emission standards on certain road spaces.

Older, more polluting vehicles that do not meet the proposed minimum emission standards, will face a fine if they enter an LEZ when enforcement begins.

Why are Low Emission Zones being introduced in the UK?

The overall aim is to try and improve air quality. In turn, this will help improve people’s quality of life as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition to helping air quality, the introduction of LEZs hopes to help accelerate the uptake of less polluting vehicles, encourage people to move away from private car use and increase the safety, attractiveness and amenity of city centres.

When will a Low Emission Zone be introduced to Glasgow?

The first phase of Glasgow's LEZ was introduced on 31st December 2018, but only affected local bus services.

The second phase will be enforced from 1st June 2023 and expand the scope of Glasgow's LEZ, affecting all vehicles driving into the city centre zone, including private cars.

The third, and final phase, is marked for 1st June 2024 where enforcement for vehicles registered to a residential property within the zone area will begin.

Where is Glasgow's Low Emission Zone?

Glasgow's LEZ covers an area of the city centre bounded by the M8 motorway to the north and west, from the River Clyde to the south and Saltmarket/High Street to the east.

The M8 motorway is not included within Glasgow's LEZ.

Which vehicles will be affected by Low Emission Zones?

You don’t need an electric car to drive in a LEZ. For each LEZ/ULEZ/CAZ, the local authority dictates what level of restrictions are to be applied.

For Scotland’s LEZs, the proposed restrictions for non-compliant vehicles are:

  • Euro 4 for petrol cars and vans (generally vehicles registered from 2006)
  • Euro 6 for diesel cars and vans (generally vehicles registered from September 2015)
  • Euro VI for buses, coaches and HGVs (generally vehicles registered from January 2013)

These dates are only indicative - please check to confirm with your vehicle manual or the manufacturer.

Are there any exemptions to Low Emission Zones?

At the moment, zone residents have extra time to comply before they will face penalty charges.

The LEZ applies to all vehicles entering the zone, except those entitled to an exemption. This includes blue badge holders and those vehicles unaffected by LEZ requirements including motorcycles and mopeds.

Emergency vehicles, naval, military or Air Force vehicles as well as historic vehicles and Showman’s vehicles are also exempt.

And, of course, fully electric vehicles comply with LEZ requirements.

How much is the Low Emission Zone charge?

The initial penalty charge for all non-compliant vehicles entering a Low Emission Zone in Scotland will be £60. However, this fee can be reduced by 50% if paid within 14 days.

Penalty rates double for repeated entries up to a maximum of £480 for cars and £960 for buses and HGVs.

Arnold Clark has opened a new Kia dealership in Ayr, extending its Kia network from nine sites to ten.

The new Kia dealership will be located on Heathfield Road in Ayr, replacing the Group’s Ayr Used Car Centre that was previously based there.

The move means that Arnold Clark will now be the sole Kia dealer in Ayr, taking over from Springside Motors, with over 150 used cars on site and a wide selection of the UK’s best used Kia deals. The Group has also confirmed the addition of a Kia-authorised repairer at their Western Road, Kilmarnock branch – meaning customers can easily access Kia-approved servicing and repairs as normal.

Arnold Clark has announced that, as part of the takeover, the staff from the existing Springside Kia branch will move to either the newly minted Ayr or Kilmarnock branch.

The new Kia Ayr branch marks the continuation of the extended partnership between Arnold Clark and the Korean manufacturer, with Kia UK President Paul Philpott recently emphasising the effectiveness of the franchise model, highlighted by Kia’s record delivery of 100,000 vehicles in the UK last year.

David Munton, Franchise Manager of Kia, said: “We’re delighted to further expand our retail network with the opening of our new Kia dealership in Ayr. As the sole Kia dealer in the area, we look forward to offering our new and existing customers a whole new level of service and choice. We also have a fantastic and experienced team working at the branch who will provide customers with all the expert advice and information they need when purchasing their next Kia.”

Eddie Hawthorne, Chief Executive and Group Managing Director, added: “It’s always exciting to welcome a new branch to the Arnold Clark family, and we’re looking forward to growing our brilliant partnership with Kia. With this branch, we can offer variety, value and an exceptional level of service, all from a convenient location in Ayr.”

Arnold Clark is delighted to have won a top prize at the inaugural Women's Football Awards in London.

We picked up the Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility Award at the event in London, which celebrated the players, people, brands and organisations who are contributing to the phenomenal growth of the sport.

The award recognised the positive impact that our CSR activities have had on fans, communities, grassroots initiatives, environment, employees and other stakeholders in women’s football.

While Arnold Clark continues to support local schools, charities and community groups, we were also proud to host the second edition of the Arnold Clark Cup earlier this year.

Through our sponsorship of the Arnold Clark Cup, we have built invaluable connections within women’s football and worked with local communities to raise awareness of the game. In turn, we hope this can inspire a new generation of footballing stars.

A host of big names were nominated for the award, including Barclays, EA Sports and Cinch. However, a star-studded judging panel made up of Lionesses and sports media personalities selected Arnold Clark as the winner.

Emily Walker, Head of Media and Brand Marketing at Arnold Clark, said: 'It's a real honour to pick up this award at the Women's Football Awards.

'At Arnold Clark, we strongly believe in thinking beyond the company, giving back to the communities we serve and support, and embracing opportunities to help.

'This is demonstrated through our continued support of local schools, charities, community groups and sports teams; as well as our significant investment in high-level sponsorships close to our heart.

'It was also great to have the Arnold Clark Cup back this year, and it proved to be huge success with a record number of fans in attendance. We're already looking forward to next year!'

The Women’s Football Awards were hosted by former Chelsea and England international Eni Aluko and ex-Liverpool star and Sky Sports presenter Jamie Carragher, who were joined by leading personalities from the women’s game alongside top celebrities and broadcasters.

Limited-edition MINI Electric Convertible

We all know what a success the MINI Electric has been.

Since it went on sale three years ago, one in five MINIs sold in Europe are electric.

And now, finally, a strictly limited-edition cabriolet version of the attractive EV is to go into production.

The electric MINI Cooper SE Convertible has become a reality just might months after the company displayed a drop-top prototype. Just 999 examples of the production model will be built, with 150 units earmarked for the UK. But — and it’s a big but — it comes with a hefty price tag of £52,000.

MINI has set the car’s specifications, and it will be available in a choice of just two colours, White Silver or Enigmatic Black.

As you would expect, it also comes with some special touches, including leather sports seats with Nappa touches, bespoke 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels, which are made from recycled aluminium, and a 1/999 numbering plaque. There’s also Bronze Resolute exterior detailing, black door mirror caps, ambient lighting, keyless entry and the MINI Yours soft-top roof.

The comprehensive ‘standard’ spec list also includes a heated Nappa leather steering wheel, a rear-view camera, active parking, driver assistance tech, active cruise control, sat nav, a Harmon Kardon stereo, wireless phone charging, a heads-up display and more piano-black trim.

In terms of its external dimensions, the limited run electric cabriolet is pretty much identical to its combustion sibling. That means it’s 3,863mm long and 1,727mm tall, while boot space is 160 litres. It also has an electrically powered, Union Jack-embossed cloth soft top.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

MINI claims it’s the first fully electric, fully convertible model to be sold. Its only potential rival is the Fiat 500 Cabrio EV, but that’s only fitted with a landaulet rear.

The cabriolet model uses the same 181bhp single-motor set-up as the standard MINI Electric, however the 0-62mph time is a tad slower than the fixed-roof MINI Electric, taking 8.2 seconds to cover the sprint. That is clearly a result of the additional weight created by some extra strengthening for the convertible. For the same reason, range is also down slightly to 124 miles.

With the ongoing success of the MINI Electric in the UK and across Europe, it was only matter of time before a cabriolet version was officially launched. Its introduction has been discussed by head of MINI, Stefanie Wurst.

‘It is this success which has spurred us to implement the small series of the MINI Cooper SE Convertible within only a few months,’ she explained.

‘I’m delighted that we can offer customers an extraordinary and exclusive open-air go-kart feeling.’

Volkswagen gives its ID.3 a ‘second-generation’ facelift

Volkswagen's all-electric future kicked off at the end of 2019 with the introduction of the ID.3.

And the ‘second generation’ of the German marque’s electric Golf-sized family hatchback has now been unveiled.

The latest, chunkier ID.3, starting from roughly £37,00 and available now at Arnold Clark, is, by the carmaker’s own admission, very much a result of having listened “very carefully” to the ID.3 community.

And that ‘community’ is significant. Volkswagen claims 300,000 ID.3s have been sold since deliveries started during the third quarter of 2020.

Initially, this facelift wasn’t even scheduled by VW until 2024, but such was the reaction — almost immediately from launch — to the EV’s software and interior quality that the company fast-tracked the new improvements. And so extensive are the upgrades that even Volkswagen now refers to it as the ‘second-generation’ ID.3.

External styling changes

As you would expect of a design which is now labelled ‘second generation’, there are some notable and significant changes in the external styling of the ID.3, all aimed at setting it apart from the original.

Designers have given the front bumper a sharper, stronger look, while models fitted with Matrix LED headlights now get an animation which welcomes and says goodbye to the user as they approach and leave the vehicle.

Look carefully at the base of the windscreen and you’ll spot that the black plastic area which appeared at the base of the first-generation ID.3 has disappeared, replaced by a larger body-coloured bonnet. I must admit, it’s a change I welcome. Volkswagen says it’s intended to 'create an additional impression of visual lengthening'. It also has resulted in a slightly improved drag coefficient.

There’s also a new palette of external colours — including the Dark Olivine Green — plus headlights and tail-light clusters. While the former includes distinctive X-shaped daytime-running lights, the latter incorporates refreshed scrolling indicators.

Volkswagen has also streamlined the trim level range, with only the Pro and Pro S specifications to be offered.

Technology and infotainment

Ok, let’s cut straight to the chase. These were the two main areas of criticism when the ID.3 was first unveiled, and drivers were quick to question its digital and driver interfaces. No surprise then that Volkswagen has made improvements in the field.

Firstly, what hasn’t changed is the digital instrument panel, which is still 5.3 inches across, and the rocker switch at the side of the steering wheel for gear selection remains in place.

There are, however, changes to the infotainment set-up, but they are not as widespread and comprehensive as many would have wished. At least not on this occasion. Further IT upgrades will arrive in 2024 simply because, while Volkswagen could bring the core facelift forward by 12 months or so, the techie stuff is on a fixed deadline … which isn’t available untill next year.

Back to this facelift. While mainland European markets will get a new 12-inch central display as standard, UK buyers will be restricted to a 10-inch screen for the time being. Why? Because the layout of the dashboard has not yet been changed for right-hand drive.

In addition, there are only relatively minor changes to the interface. These see the charging controls, which were previously based on a sub-menu, now moved to the top level of the home screen. ‘Feature on demand’ technology will now also be supported, meaning users can access increased functionality for as short a period as one month. It’s worth highlighting that since the ID.3 models coming to the UK already benefit from features such as navigation and dual-zone climate control, the only potential add-on we’re likely to benefit from is an upgrade from 10 ambient-light colours to 30.

One interesting and potentially important upgrade is in Volkswagen’s own navigation software, which now allows the route planner to schedule charging stops more effectively on longer journeys. It might suggest that, rather than have one longer stop at a lower-powered plug, it will identify two short stops at points with faster charging capability. The infotainment system also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

But there are already further additional changes and improvements scheduled. Volkswagen says a different 12.9-inch display will become standard in the ID.3 (including in the UK) from the middle of next year. This will incorporate what many people have been crying out for; backlighting to finally illuminate the combined slider control for the heating and audio volume.

Interior improvements

Here again, Volkswagen emphasises it has listened to customer feedback and made the corresponding positive changes.

In addition to new ambient lighting, there are now more areas in the passenger cabin which have been padded with foam – a direct result of customers who criticised the ID.3 for not being as plush as a Golf. That would also account for the redesign of the door inlays which now include softer, larger surfaces.

Look closely and you’ll also spot new double-stitching on the fabrics and padded areas on the main fascia.

The use of sustainable materials has been improved and increased. Not only are the second-gen ID.3’s fabrics all completely animal-free, but the microfibre material used on the door trims and seat covers — Volkswagen has named it Artvelours Eco — is made from 71% recycled plastics.

Dimensions

One thing that hasn’t changed is the overall size of the ID.3. Its overall dimensions remain the same as the first generation That means it still adheres to the general sizing of a family hatchback, being 4.26-metres long and 1.81-metres wide, which conveniently slots it between the Volkswagen Polo and Golf.

That said, sitting on its MEB architecture means the ID.3 has a longer wheelbase resulting in interior space being closer to that of the Passat. As for bootspace, at 385 litres it basically matches the Golf. Fold the rear seats down and stowage increases to 1,267 litres.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

Battery, charging and range

Essentially there’s no change here ¬– the core battery and electric motors first available to the ID.3 remain unchanged. Buyers get capacity choices of 58kWh in the Pro and 77kWh in the Pro S, delivering ranges of up to 265 miles and 339 miles respectively (on the WLTP figures).

However, the range for the bigger battery is a tad down on the previous model, simply because of the new plusher interior’s weight outweighing the aerodynamic gains of the newcomer’s more slippery shape. The current single rear-mounted motor delivers 201bhp and 310Nm, which propels the car from standstill to 62mph in 7.3 seconds (7.7 seconds in the Pro S), and on to a max of 99mph.

It’s also likely we’ll see a new, smaller battery available as a third option in the ID.3 range. We know it won’t be the same 45kWh unit which was fitted to the first-generation cars, but both the capacity, and a range of around 210 miles, will be similar.

As for charging, Volkswagen has mirrored the improvements made to the larger ID.4 by increasing the ID 3’s maximum DC rapid-charging rate from 125kW to 170kW.

England's most capped footballer pays visit to local girl's football team

England's most capped footballer, Fara Williams MBE, surprised a local amateur team with brand-new kit as part of Arnold Clark's Gear Up For Sport campaign.

The former Lioness, who won 177 caps for her country between 2001 and 2019, handed over some new kit, including footballs, training bibs and water bottles, to the team and spent time with the youngsters during a recent training session in Glasgow's southside.

The club was delighted with Arnold Clark's generosity and the chance to meet ex-Everton and Liverpool star Fara.

As part of Arnold Clark's Gear Up For Sport campaign last year, Europe's largest independent car retailer gave away 2,000 kits to youth sports teams aged 4-15 across the UK.

And Busby AFC head coach Gary Dickson thanked Arnold Clark for their support and in turn, helping grassroots football.

He said: 'The girls were absolutely delighted to meet Fara.

'We're massive advocates for the women's game. It's incredible to see how much it's grown on the back of the Women's European Championships last year, so there's no better person to have meet the team than Fara Williams. She really inspires so many young kids.

'The support from Arnold Clark has been absolutely fantastic, especially for a grassroots club like us.

'We rely on fundraising to get a lot of our strips and kits for the girls, so to have Arnold Clark supporting us is a massive, massive positive and we really appreciate it.'

Fara, who is also an Arnold Clark ambassador, added: ‘It's great to see the impact Arnold Clark's Gear Up For Sport has had on local communities.'

Peugeot 408 review

There’s no denying Peugeot’s latest 408, which includes plug-in hybrid technology, is a true head-turner.

Its striking design is certainly different, in a positive way. However, the question I get asked most often about the 408 is, ‘what is it, exactly?’

I must admit, there’s no real easy answer. Is it a hatchback, a crossover SUV or a coupé? Is it a hatchback coupé? A coupé crossover SUV? Or a crossover hatchback?

To be honest, I haven’t yet come to a defining conclusion; apart from the fact, it’s definitely different. And Peugeot should be applauded for creating it.

The French company labels the 408 a ‘C-segment fastback’. Okay, I get it. I can live with fastback. It’s got four doors and combines elements of an SUV and a hatchback. In terms of pricing, at £31,050 to £46,500, Peugeot has pitched the 408 between the 308 estate and 3008 crossover. Competition? The closest is probably the Kia XCeed.

And the 408 is something of a looker. Peugeot’s stylists have done a really fine job in making the 408 distinctive. It’s a bold design, most noticeably with the sculpted rear-wheel arches and bold LED lighting signatures. It’s also worth noting the retro-inspired script for the badging, plus the quirky ‘cat’s ears’ at the top of each C pillar. In addition to hiding the extra metal needed to balance headroom against the desired coupé aesthetic, Peugeot says they help improve airflow.

What’s it like inside?

A bit like the outside, it’s adventurous! Thanks to a big boot and good rear passenger space, it’s immensely practical, even when set against conventional mid-sized SUV rivals.

There’s style by the bucketload, and this is further supported by the incorporation of premium materials and crisp digital displays.

Perhaps the elephant in the room — well, cabin — is the i-Cockpit set-up. This invites drivers to interpret the instrument display over a small steering wheel. Both — the i-Cockpit and small steering wheel — still tend to divide opinion. Personally, I think they’re great, especially the 3D-effect display which looks pretty cool. Just make sure when you test the 408 that your driving position allows you to see the instrument cluster over the top of the steering wheel.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

One thing which is unquestionably excellent is the new 10-inch infotainment touchscreen. Already seen on the 308, it responds fairy quickly to your inputs, plus it looks slick. More importantly, the strip of large touch-sensitive keys for the various menus ensures they’re simple to use while driving. And that means less time with your eyes off the road.

It’s impressively roomy, with enough space in the rear for a couple of six-footers to stretch their legs. Boot space, as well, is impressive, with up to 536 litres of stowage space. That drops slightly to 471 litres in the PHEV. The boot is further supplemented by a 60/40-split folding rear bench and a wide-opening rear hatch.

Ok, what about engines and performance?

In terms of engines, Peugeot bosses have done their best to make sure there’s something for everyone. And the availability of plug-in technology is certainly something of a sweetener.

The two plug-in options are the badged Hybrid 180 (178bhp) and Hybrid 225 (222bhp), with both mating a 108bhp e-motor and 1.6-litre petrol unit. And like the entry-level 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol version, they all use a version of Peugeot’s eight-speed EAT (Efficient Automatic Transmission) gearbox.

The three-cylinder 129bhp petrol delivers performance which will be perfectly adequate for the majority of owners, with 0-62mph recorded in 10.4 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. Peugeot quotes the PureTech petrol will return between 41mpg and 48mpg, with CO2 emissions of 133 to 156g/km.

The Hybrid 180 and Hybrid 225 models are faster. Both PHEV units deliver the same 266Nm maximum torque and there’s only 0.3 seconds difference between the 0-62mph times (8.1 seconds for the Hybrid 180 and 7.8s for the Hybrid 225). Both have a top speed of 140mph. CO2 emissions are between 24-30g/km.

The 12.4kWh battery, charged via a 3.7kW onboard charger — there’s also an optional 7.4kW charger which is worth considering — will give the driver 40 miles of official WLTP EV range. Though don’t expect to achieve that in real-world driving.

Of course, the plug-in hybrids have an eye-wateringly attractive WLTP combined cycle fuel economy of 215mpg for the Hybrid 180 or 211mpg from the Hybrid 225. It might be possible to get close to those figures, but you would need to be near fanatical in terms of recharging to achieve them. In the real world? Expect closer to 45mpg … plus your 25 miles or so all-electric.

Is there a choice of trim levels?

There is. They run from the entry-level Allure to the Allure Premium to the GT. And as is now common with most newly launched models, there’s also a limited run First Edition model. As I mentioned earlier, prices range from £31,050 to £46,500.

All models get Peugeot’s i-Cockpit and the i-Connect Advanced infotainment system which essentially mean a 10-inch central touchscreen and a 10-inch digital instrument display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, while navigation with live traffic updates and over-the-air software updates are also available.

The Allure entry-level trim gets ambient lighting for the cabin, a reversing camera, LED headlights with Peugeot’s Smartbeam auto-dipping functionality, plus 17-inch alloys. Allure Premium adds adaptive cruise control and various other driver assist systems, plus keyless entry and 19-inch alloys.

Step up to the GT and you get Peugeot’s Driver Sport pack which adds a selection of driving modes, including Normal, Eco and Sport, plus Hybrid and Electric for the plug-in hybrid models. These alter the throttle, gearbox settings and the steering weighting. The GT also gets 3D technology for the instrument display, plus large Peugeot lion badges on the front doors.

Verdict

If you’re looking for a stylish family car that will fit mum, dad and the kids, plus a decent amount of luggage, then it’s definitely worth checking out the 408.

The big dilemma is petrol or PHEV? The plug-in hybrid will certainly work if you’re buying it as a company car, with a benefit-in-kind rate of 8% for the hybrid and 32% for the petrol.

Also, factor in the purchase price. If you opt for the mid-spec Allure Premium trim — which is probably the best car to go for — then you’re looking at £32,175 for the pure petrol, but it leaps to £40,825 for the 180 hybrid or £42,225 for the 225. If it was me? I’d seriously look at the 408 Allure Premium 1.2 PureTech petrol.

Kia Picanto review

$
0
0

While there’s talk of many manufacturers putting the brakes on the production of city cars, that certainly isn’t the case for Kia with their ever popular and highly impressive little Picanto.

And how things have changed. When it first appeared, the Picanto was something of a sparse creation, with uninspiring, drab looks. Fast forward, and by the time the third generation arrived, it had morphed into a stylish design combining much more interior space, higher quality finishing and more equipment.

And while the driving experience has also become more grown up, Kia has developed the range — available across what now totals 10 Arnold Clark Kia dealerships — to include an SUV-style X-Line model for drivers keen on the crossover look.

The third-generation Picanto was unveiled in 2017 but was faced by serious competition from the likes of the Hyundai i10 and Volkswagen up!.

Kia sensibly gave its model a mid-life facelift in 2020 and, in addition to introducing further levels of improved standard equipment, updated the engine.

What models are available?

While the likes of the Peugeot 108, Toyota Aygo, ŠKODA Citigo and Citroën C1 are no longer in production, the Picanto goes from strength to strength. Okay, the three-door is no longer available, but the stylish five-door hatchback is one which is certainly worth trying if you’re in the market for a supermini.

Sensibly, and thankfully rather logically, Kia identifies the Picanto’s trim levels as 1, 2, and 3. Simple. The top of the range includes the X-Line S, GT-Line and GT-Line S models. As you would expect, the GT-Line and GT-Line S cars get a healthy, sporty look.

In contrast, the X-Line S gets an altogether more rugged look with chunky off-road bumpers, a raised ride height and wheel arch extensions. In many ways, it looks like a mini SUV.

And prices?

You can grab an entry-level Picanto from around £13,415, with the most expensive tipping over £17,470.

Right, tell me about the engines…

You can choose from two petrol engines, the 1.0-litre three-cylinder and a 1.0 T-GDi three-cylinder turbo, which deliver 66bhp and 99bhp respectively. Worth pointing out here that not all engines are sold in every trim level. You’ll need to buy the GT-Line or GT-Line S models if you want the turbo triple. It’s a good decision in my mind.

A five-speed manual gearbox is standard across the range, though the option list includes a five-speed automatic available for the non-turbo petrol.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

What about the trim levels?

The entry-level Picanto '1' trim, on the face of it, is pretty basic. You get manual door mirrors, a two-speaker stereo and electric front windows. But you do get a number of safety equipment features as standard, including a tyre pressure monitoring system and hill-start assist control.

Step up to ‘2’ and you add electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, Bluetooth, air conditioning and 14-inch alloy wheels. The ‘3’ spec Picanto, which adds about £1,500 over the entry-level model, gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a reversing camera system and sat nav, plus a few more goodies, including a larger eight-inch touchscreen and a DAB radio.

If you’re considering the GT-Line, X-Line S or GT-Line S, you’ll find a sporty body kit, red detailing and big bumpers on the GT models. The GT-Line’s looks are further enhanced with the addition of rear privacy glass, LED daytime running lights and 16-inch alloys. Heated front seats, an electric sunroof and cruise control help mark out the GT-Line S.

The X-Line S model, as I mentioned earlier, gets a slightly more rugged look with bigger, chunkier bumpers, and a ride height which has been raised by 15mm. Like the rest of the Picanto range, it too is front-wheel drive.

Worth stressing that the eight-inch touchscreen on the 3, X-Line, GT-Line and GT-Line S cars is cleverly and logically laid out and is as simple and easy to use as it is in the flagship Sorento SUV.

Performance?

It’s a city car, so don’t look at the Picanto expecting blood-curdling acceleration figures, ‘cos it ain’t gonna happen. The 1.0-litre Picanto does 0-62mph in 13.8 seconds. Slip yourself behind the wheel of the 1.0 T-GDi turbo petrol, and that comes down significantly to 9.8 seconds. And, as we know, this engine is only available in more expensive GT-Line and GT-Line S models.

The non-turbo 1.0-litre three-cylinder motor though is perfectly tuned for life in the cities, where speed limits can fluctuate between built-up areas and more opens spaces. Here, torque and tractability are king and the Picanto performs well, taking 9.5 seconds to get from 30-50mph in fourth, and 13.9 seconds from 50-70mph in fifth. It’s a pretty flexible engine.

Is the Picanto cheap to run?

It’s definitely one of the most affordable cars you can buy. And that not only goes for the list price, but also fuel, insurance, servicing and consumables.

Depending on which spec you choose, the 66bhp Picanto will return between 55.4-58.9mpg when mated to the manual gearbox. This drops slightly to 52.3-54.3mpg if you opt for the automatic box. The manual 99bhp turbo-petrol engine should, according to Kia, deliver an average of 53.3mpg.

Not surprisingly, the less-powered engine performs best in terms of CO2 emissions, with a reading of between 110-123g/km depending on the spec. Again, these figures rise marginally in the turbo-petrol engine, up to 123-129g/km. The positive is these slight changes mean the 99bhp 1.0 T-GDi should only be marginally more expensive to tax.

And those tax groups range from 1 to 5 for the regular models, or from 2 to 5 for X-Line versions. Fitted with the 66bhp engine, the GT-Line and GT-Line S cars range from 2 to 4. However, slot the more powerful turbo-petrol engine in and the tax group jumps to group 11.

How practical is it?

Remember, this is a city car, so should be judged accordingly. But while it does boast rather tiny exterior dimensions, the interior is pretty impressive in terms of space.

Measuring 3,595mm in length, and 1,595mm wide, the Picanto is among the smallest cars on sale. One large benefit is: it’s a cinch to park. Also worth mentioning, the X-Line S version is slightly larger, being 30mm wider and 15mm taller. It’s also 75mm longer.

Access through the wide-opening rear doors makes getting in and out of the Picanto infinitely easier — one of the major benefits of Kia removing the three-door from the range — and the majority of the Picanto range is exclusively available in a four-seater spec. There’s certainly more rear legroom in this third generation of Picanto, a result of the longer wheelbase.

If you really need the extra space for a fifth occupant, you’re better opting for the slightly higher-riding X-Line S.

All-round visibility is good thanks to the thin pillars and upright rear screen. Elsewhere, there’s also usable door bins, a decent glovebox, a small central armrest and a couple of cupholders ahead of the gear lever. Top-spec cars also include a reversing camera as standard.

And how big is the boot?

The best in class: that’s how good it is. With the rear seats in place, you can stow 255 litres of shopping or other goodies. To put that into context, that’s as much as some superminis. Fold the rear seats down, and space increases to 1,010 litres.

Verdict

If you’re looking for a stylish, good-looking city car, the Kia Picanto should certainly be on your shortlist. Its combination of dinky exterior size allied to its surprising interior space make it a more than worthwhile candidate.

Throw in the comprehensive list of trim levels and the choice of power outputs and performance, and there’s a plethora of options for you to enjoy. Add in the fact buyers have the security of an impressively strong seven-year/100,000-mile warranty and the Picanto becomes even more of a winner.
