With savings on over 20,000 used cars, it’s the UK’s BIGGEST used car sale.

Yes, Arnold Clark's Real Sale is back – and with huge savings to be made, you don’t want to miss out.

No matter what you're looking for, we’ll help you find the perfect car for you.

Below, we take a look at just some of the best deals from this year's Real Sale. But that’s not all – remember to check out some of the other cars which are available for delivery right now.

Vauxhall Astra

From storage to speed, systems and safety, the Vauxhall Astra offers it all.

And while the Astra might be one of the most popular cars in the UK, it also remains one of the most economical hatchbacks on the market.

First released in the 1980s, we are now on to the eighth-generation Astra and it looks sharper than ever.

Inside, Vauxhall has decided to strip it back compared to its previous models – making its technology simple and intuitive to use.

The Vauxhall Astra is known for being a practical model. The vehicle’s dimensions mean that there’s lots of headroom throughout.

For boot-space, there's 422 litres on offer, one of the largest spaces in its vehicle class. This is larger than the 375 litres in the Ford Focus and 380 litres in the Volkswagen Golf. Fold the rear seats down to create 1,339 litres – enough for a large number of bags.

And what about safety? Well, crash safety experts, Euro NCAP, awarded the Astra a four-star safety rating. Receiving an adult safety score of 80% and a child safety score of 82%. There are also two ISOFIX points in the rear outer seats.

Mercedes-Benz EQC

As its first mainstream all-electric model, the arrival of the Mercedes-Benz EQC in 2019 marked a significant milestone for the German manufacturer.

It's a compact crossover, rivalling reputable competitors such as Audi’s e-tron, BMW’s iX, and the Tesla Model X.

The vehicle is only available with one powertrain, called the 400. It produces 408PS and includes all-wheel drive thanks to Mercedes’ 4MATIC system.

The AMG Line Premium gets 21-inch rims, a sunroof and a wireless phone charger. It also houses voice control, an augmented reality sat nav and a Burmester premium sound system.

The top-of-the-tree AMG Line Premium Plus gets memory seats, a 360-degree camera and a head-up display.

In terms of boot space, the EQC offers a respectable 500-litre capacity, which expands to 1,060 litres when the rear seats are folded.

MG HS

MG is one of the market's fastest growing brands and that's mainly thanks to its affordable mid-sized SUV, the ZS model.

However, the HS model was launched in the UK in 2019 and it delivers a higher standard of luxury and sophistication than anything the brand has previously offered.

The mainstream engine is a 162PS, 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol unit that only drives through the front wheels. It's capable of 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds, reaching a top speed of 118mph.

This revised HS looks quite a bit sleeker than before, courtesy of revised bi-function LED headlights, a bolder grille design and a re-styled front bumper. At the rear, a new bumper design, revised dual exhaust outlets and LED taillights complete the styling update, alongside a smarter 18-inch diamond cut wheel design.

The 463-litre boot is a pretty good size, while the interior space is class-leading.

If you're looking for a mid-to-large-sized SUV, then this is definitely one that will fall under the 'value-for-money' category.

CUPRA Formentor

In 2018, Spanish maker SEAT announced that CUPRA would become a stand-alone brand.

And the Formentor was the first car developed exclusively by CUPRA, with the aim of delivering sophistication, innovation and a dynamic driving experience.

The Formentor sits a little lower than most other performance SUVs and crossovers – in terms of size, think of the Volvo XC40 or Audi Q3.

However, the design emphasis on the long bonnet, coupled with the lower height, gives the car a very dynamic appearance – and one that is completely distinctive.

Inside, there's lots of brushed, dark aluminium with copper accents and blue leather-trimmed front bucket seats. In the centre of the dash is a large 12-inch touchscreen infotainment screen that allows the usual access to navigation, info and media.

If you're in the market for efficiency in a performance SUV, then it's the 'e-HYBRID' Formentor you should be looking at.

There are a range of hybrid powertrains available. A full electric range of up to 34 miles allows for emission-free city driving, and it comes with an eight-year battery warranty, which also covers the battery for up to 100,000 miles.

Volkswagen T-Cross

SUVS are proving popular among drivers, and it's no surprise with the wide range on offer.

The Volkswagen T-Cross offers family-friendly practicality and has a crowd-pleasing 455-litre boot.

In 2019, Volkswagen introduced the T-Cross – a small SUV based on the ever-popular Polo – to the world.

Despite its small external form, the T-Cross is spacious inside, with plenty of room in the back seat and the boot.

The T-Cross enjoys the high-quality craftsmanship Volkswagen is famed for, with a subtle yet luxurious finish inside and out. In keeping with Volkswagen's modern line-up of cars, the T-Cross has a distinct style and sense of practicality.

The T-Cross returns between 43 and 54mpg depending on your engine choice, meaning the T-Cross remains an impressively economical car within its class

With impressive fuel economy, a tidy frame and a roomy interior, the T-Cross can comfortably handle the school run, the commute, or even take you further afield.

Fiat 500

It's the iconic city car that stands out for its style.

First released back in 1957, the Fiat 500 returned after a 32-year hiatus in 2007. Since its return, it has remained a popular choice among drivers that have recently passed their test and those looking or a city runner.

Fiat designed the 500 to catch attention with its striking retro-inspired design that makes it instantly recognisable out on the road.

The four-seater rivals the likes of the Volkswagen Up!, SEAT Mii and Renault Twingo.

It can seat adults comfortably in the rear but is most practical for shorter journeys and is famed for being easy to drive.

The driving position is elevated, giving drivers a decent view of the road. In models with manual transmission, the gear stick is high on the central dashboard so it’s close to the steering wheel.

The small city car has a compact boot of 185 litres. It’s a decent space for a shopping trip or a couple of holdalls for a weekend away. By comparison, the Renault Twingo has 188 litres of capacity. If you need more space, you can fold the seats down to create 550 litres of space for bulkier items.

Overall, the Fiat 500 is fairly low cost to run, and in terms of insurance, it falls into groups 3 to 15.

Vauxhall Corsa

There's a reason why the Vauxhall Corsa is one of the UK's best-selling cars.

And this fifth-generation version has been a huge sales success for the French brand.

The recently updated Corsa now fits visually in with the rest of the latest Vauxhall range thanks to the adoption of the brand's distinctive 'Vizor'-style front grille, a single solid black panel with a restyled Griffin badge.

The Corsa has three trims – the base trim is the 'Design', the mid-range 'GS' trim is next and then there's the top 'Ultimate' trim.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone-mirroring is included, as is 'Connected 3D' navigation, over-the-air software updates and ‘Hey Vauxhall’ voice control. The seven-inch digital instrument screen has also been improved with sharper graphics. Meanwhile, a wireless charging mat is offered for the first time.

Other cabin changes include fresh upholstery choices, a redesign for the steering wheel and gear selector – and a revised high-resolution wide-view rear camera.

And if you've got a family, there's plenty of room to put the kids' school bags in the boot, which is 309 litres in size.

Peugeot 3008

A mid-sized SUV, the Peugeot 3008 delivers a best-in-class range of features, growing its enduring popularity.

In a competitive vehicle class, the Peugeot 3008’s rivals include the ŠKODA Karoq, Ford Kuga and Nissan Qashqai.

However, the Peugeot 3008’s large size means there is ample storage and boot space for every need. With the rear seats up, many 3008s have 592 litres of space, expanding to 1,670 litres when the seats are folded down.

For added safety, it also features a removable floor and plenty of netting to help keep your luggage upright while stowed. Compared to the Karoq’s standard 521 litres and Qashqai’s 504 litres of boot space, the Peugeot 3008’s large boot space is a highly appealing feature.

And getting the 3008 ready for family journeys is no hassle with ISOFIX points conveniently fitted on the front passenger seat and two rear window-side seats.

Vauxhall Grandland X

You've probably realised by now that the market for SUVs is extremely competitive.

But the Grandland X, Vauxhall’s third and largest SUV to date, certainly holds its own.

Prioritising space and comfort, the Grandland X is perfect for adventurous families, accommodating five people with ease and offering multiple seating and storage configurations.

Launched much later than rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai, Peugeot 3008 and ŠKODA Karoq, the Grandland X was Vauxhall’s way of putting an affordable, family-friendly stamp on the crossover trend.

If you’re heading to the airport or require plenty of storage space for a trip away, the Grandland X offers a 514-litre boot with all the seats up, which is ample for the weekly shop or a light pushchair. This expands to an impressive 1,652 litres with the seats down, perfect for several suitcases, sports equipment or bulky items.

Step inside the Vauxhall Grandland X and you’ll discover a spacious, well-organised and beautifully crafted cabin that prioritises the comfort of both driver and passengers.

Mercedes-Benz GLA

The Mercedes GLA is a compact and stylish SUV packed with tons of high-tech and a choice of quality engines.

This model is the smallest SUV car in the Mercedes-Benz range, but for its size, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by its practicality and luxury appeal compared to others in its class.

Its styling is similar to a hatchback, but you get a better vantage point as it sits higher than your average car. The exterior also exudes the brand’s premium aesthetic with powerful proportions and strong lines throughout.

For anyone looking for a reliable and luxurious car, Mercedes-Benz GLA comes in a variety of trim levels.

Meanwhile, the technology and infotainment systems are another area where this model shines. The dashboard showcases a striking and intuitive configuration with twin screens, powered by the brand’s MBUX system, which is top of its class compared to other brands.

The 10.25-inch infotainment screens offer a wide variety of functions, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while you can also activate voice control with a simple ‘Hey Mercedes’ command to get started.

BYD Seal review

BYD has already made waves in the all-electric car sector with the launch of its ATTO 3 and Dolphin.

But now the Chinese carmaker has raised the bar yet again by launching its all-new Seal, a stylish, sporty number.

Already available to order from Arnold Clark — BYD’s sole partner in Scotland with its dealership in Glasgow, and which will be joined by three more branches in Edinburgh, Perth and Aberdeen through 2024 — the Seal takes the battle to the likes of the Tesla Model 3, the Hyundai Ioniq 6, Kia EV6 and BMW i4. And there’s no question extending the network will definitely boost the attraction of the badge.

First-up, the Seal is a pretty good-looking piece of kit. There’s a Porsche Taycan look to the front of the car, and the overall appearance seems to meld the lines of the Tesla 3 and Hyundai IONIQ 6 into one combined styling. It’s a handsome and sleek look with a drag coefficient 0.219Cd.

For now, BYD is still seen as a relatively ‘new brand’ in the automotive world. But the reality is it’s the world’s leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles and power batteries, plus it just happens to build half of the world’s iPads. And following the launch of the ATTO 3 SUV and Dolphin into the UK this year, the arrival of the Seal is its third new car in 12 months.

BYD: the ‘next generation’

Such is the company’s rate of global expansion that BYD claims this Seal saloon is a 'next-generation' EV.

While the new model sits on the same e-Platform 3.0 used its previous two models, the Seal is BYD’s first British model to make the switch from front to rear-wheel drive. That said, the model I drove was top-spec 4WD Excellence fitted with an additional motor on the front axle.

Immediately there’s a realisation that the 'next-generation' billing isn’t just a marketing headline. Even at low speeds the newcomer instantly feels more focused, with a firmer, more pliant ride. That’s supplemented by a weightier feel to the steering and, with a new lower driving position, it’s clear the Seal has been designed to be much more driver-oriented than the ATTO 3 or Dolphin.

What about range, charging, and price?

As always with any electric car, there are three main subjects which need addressing: range, charging, and price.

So, let’s deal with them straight away.

There are two models in the Seal range, the Design and Excellence. The latter, which benefits from four-wheel drive and delivers 523bhp, carries a £3000 premium over the entry-level model which starts at £45,695. But in addition to 4WD, that extra £3k adds some subtle tweaks, including BYD’s Intelligent Torque Adaption Control (iTAC) system — in essence a clever torque-vectoring set-up which reduces slip and increases stability — adaptive dampers and a head-up display.

Worth highlighting here that both the Design and Excellence already come with impressive standard kit including 19-inch alloys, quilted leather upholstery, a 12-speaker Dynaudio stereo, plus a full-length panoramic roof. And of course, there’s the familiar infotainment system lifted from the Atto 3 and Dolphin, complete with its 15.6-inch rotating display running the same super-fast processor, plus Apple and Android connectivity across the board. There’s a lot of standard tech in the Seal.

Range? The standard two-wheel drive Seal can cover 354 miles from its 82.5kWh battery. Switch up to the Excellence, where the extra front motor adds around 130kg, and range drops to around 323 miles. That’s close to the same as the Tesla Model 3 when it comes to efficiency and range.

As for charging, the BYD Seal has a peak charge rate of 150kW. While that’s slightly down on all its main competitors, it still means a top-up from 30% to 80% can be completed in just 26 minutes, which isn’t bad. With the right software, home charging at up to 11kW is possible, but most owners will likely still use a 7kW wallbox to charge overnight.

What’s it like to drive?

Based on a test route which included A-roads, town driving, narrow B-roads and motorway, it’s pretty good. Right from the first seconds you set off in the Seal, you can appreciate the improvement in the fact this is a 'next generation' EV.

Throttle response is beautifully balanced and progressive, while the take up is smooth. At all times there’s a reassuring hush inside the well appointed cabin. Steering is quick and well-weighted, allowing the driver to position the car perfectly.

But while there are no steering wheel-mounted paddle controls to control brake regeneration levels — you need to delve into the settings menu to access them — the driver does get the option of a choice of drive modes. My suspicion is most people will stick to Normal, and occasionally flick into Sport … just for the fun of it.

Do the latter and in the Excellence 0-62mph comes round in just 3.8 seconds. BYD is so proud of the figure they’ve actually badged it ‘BYD Seal 3.8S’ on the bootlid.

And the attentive amongst you will have spotted the UK cars have now ditched the legend ‘Build Your Dreams’ — previously boldly displayed on the rear of the Atto 3 and Dolphin models — from the bootlid of the Seal.

And inside the cabin?

It’s dominated by its 15.6-inch touchscreen, which still manages to pirouette between landscape and portrait: personally, I feel it’s best left in portrait as the alternative does become rather too intrusive and makes the interior look too Tesla-esque. And I’m not sure why — it may have been the reflection from the panoramic sunroof — but in portrait it was almost impossible to read from the driver’s seat.

Elsewhere in the cabin there’s plenty of premium touches, including a very tactile suede-like material which lines the dash and door cards. In fact, everything your fingers will come into contact with has a quality feel to it. Seats are comfortable and supportive, and there’s plenty of legroom both front and rear. And thanks to the completely flat floor, rear passengers get loads of foot room.

As for bootspace, you can stash 402-litres and family detritus through the slightly narrow opening — I wonder if, in the future, we might get a hatchback version — plus for the first time in a BYD there’s a 53-litre lidded ‘frunk’ under the bonnet; perfect for keeping the charging cables out of the way.

So, what’s the verdict?

There’s no denying the Seal lifts BYD to another level.

Its latest offering is not only the best looking of the three models it’s launched in the UK, but it definitely appeals to the sportier driver, thanks to its sharp handling and steering, and has generous levels of equipment.

Finally, while the entry-level Design is certainly attractive, starting at £45,695 and with a monthly PCP of £549, it’s difficult to ignore the added security of four-wheel drive, better performance and more standard kit in the Excellence, all for just an extra 40 quid a month.

'My partner and I got engaged last June and were planning to get married in 2025 - but now we have same extra money, we're looking to get married next year!'

Marilyn, Derbyshire

Marilyn downloaded the app after her twin sister, Maureen, told her how handy it is to keep your mileage updated and be reminded about an upcoming MOT.

She said: 'The app is great because it means I don't forget when my MOT is due!

'Then when I saw the Rewards competition, I decided to opt in but I never thought I'd win!

'I'm taking Maureen on a cruise to celebrate the win - it's the least I could do!'

Scott, Motherwell

When Scott saw it was free to enter our Rewards competition, it was a no-brainer to sign up.

He said: 'I was out on a walk with my dad and he asked how much I'd still left to pay for my car. That's when I went on the app and noticed I could opt in for the chance to win back the cost of my car.

'It's free to enter, so there wasn't a reason not to enter.

'Then when I found out I'd won, I was in total disbelief. I'm only 22 so it's amazing to be able to pay off my car. I'm still speechless!'

Louise, Stafford

Louise downloaded the Arnold Clark app after she purchased a car from us last year.

She said: 'When I purchased my car, I downloaded the app so I could keep up to date with all my documents, and that's when I found out I could enter this competition for the chance to win back the cost of my car.

'Probably like most other winners, I couldn't believe it at first, my heart was racing!

'We're just moving to a new house, so the money will really help towards a deposit!'

Vincent, Barnsley

Similarly, Vincent downloaded our app after he got the keys to his new car almost two years ago.

He said: 'I downloaded the app so I could easily check all my documents, but when I saw the Rewards competition, I made sure to enter.

'Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would win!

'I'm now looking to see about getting a new car and will be visiting my local Arnold Clark branch to see what I like.'

Louise, from Greenock

Louise bought her new car from Arnold Clark last July and downloaded the Arnold Clark app to keep track of all her documents.

But she couldn't believe it when she was announced as a winner.

Louise said: 'I get a lot of emails, and mostly are spam, but when I saw one from Arnold Clark, I decided to keep it. When it said I had won, I checked the app and it was confirmed!

'I never play the lottery or anything like that, so to win this and the cost of my car back is amazing!

'I've managed to pay off my car and give some money to my son and his girlfriend towards a holiday to Copenhagen.'

Alex, from Leeds

Alex was using his app to book in his next MOT when he saw a notification that he’d won the cost of his car back.

He said: ‘Probably, like everyone else, I didn’t believe it at first. I wasn’t even too sure what I’d won at first.

‘Once it was confirmed, I was delighted and couldn’t wait to tell my partner. It’s like winning the lottery!

‘We’ve just bought a new house together so this money will really help!’

Suzanne, Wishaw

Our first winner, Suzanne, is part of Cat Concern, a small charity, which was set up in 2011 and helps rescue, neuter and rehome stray, unwanted, abused and abandoned cats of all ages.

UK car registration plates explained

You might have noticed some new licence plates on the road.

The new 24-plate arrived in the UK car market from 1st March 2024 and is available through Arnold Clark now.

March’s 24 number plates replace the 73 age indentifier which was released in September 2023.

And to celebrate the new change in plates, we've decided to delve into the history of the UK vehicle registration system.

From the first car registrations to the current system, here's what you need to know about number plates in the UK.

When is the 24-plate released?

The new '24' number plate was released in the UK on Friday, March 1st. The 24 age identifier will be on all new cars until the 74-plate arrives on 1 September later this year.

Why does my car have a number plate?

Quite simply, every car has a number plate to give it a unique identification so it can be linked to a registered keeper, and so it is obvious that it is a road legal vehicle.

What information can you get from a UK number plate?

A UK number plate will let you know how old a car is, and where it was first registered.

When do UK number plates change?

A new age identifier comes out twice a year on the first of March and September.

Do you need a front number plate in the UK?

Yes, it is a legal requirement for all cars to have a front number plate.

How much is my number plate worth?

It will totally depend, but before you get your hopes up, it's unlikely that a standard number plate is worth much.

Number plates, which tend to be more expensive, typically have very few characters.

How do UK number plates work?

Let's go back to the start.

The UK number plate system was brought in under the Motor Act of 1903, after the government saw the increasing need to identify owners of cars. Registrations were issued by local authorities, and the story goes that the first plate was ‘A1’, issued by the London County Council to the second Earl Russell, who dispatched his butler to stand outside all night to be first in the queue.

While that’s true, the mundane fact is that ‘A1’ was actually the second plate ever to be issued – the first one was the rather ominous sounding ‘DY’, in Hastings a month earlier. However, that hasn’t stopped ‘A1’ from gaining legendary status, and it now adorns a Bentley belonging to the Sultan of Brunei’s brother.

Early UK plates began with one or two letters which referred to the place where the plate was issued, followed by a number between one and 9999.

But the system wasn’t exactly intuitive. ‘A’ was London, and after that, it was anyone’s guess – ‘C’ was Yorkshire, ‘G’, ‘I’, ‘V’ and ‘S’ were used in Scotland and Ireland, and when they ran out of letters for local areas, two letters were used instead.

By 1932, there were more cars on the road than there were digits and letters to support this format. So instead, the convention changed to three letters and up to three numbers.

But by 1950, the government had the same issue and reversed the numbers and letters, and this system lasted for another 12 years.

By 1962, it was all change again. To make the numbering system more sustainable over the longer term, a letter was added at the end of three numbers. This time, the letter referred to the age of the car, so ‘A’ was used from January 1963, ‘B’ 1964 etc. In 1967, there was a change to the timing with the letter 'E' used from January until July and then 'F' running from August to July 1968, with 'G' arriving 1st August 1968. This format was in place until 1983.

There were other changes, too. In 1974, number plates ceased to be issued by local authorities and were centralised to the DVLC in Swansea; now, of course, known as the DVLA.

On 1st August 1983, the letters/numbers/age format was reversed to become age/ numbers/three letters. There was also the addition of a ‘Q’ prefix which was used for imports and kit cars, which is no longer in use. This series ended with a ‘Y’ in 2001.

The current system for UK registration plates from 2001 onwards

Now, registrations contain seven characters.

Just like the very first registrations, the letters stand for the area in which your vehicle was registered. This is called the ‘local memory tag’. The first letter represents the region and the second is the number assigned to the local DVLA office.

The two numbers after that are an age identifier. New plates come out every six months, from 1st March to the end of August, and from 1st September to the end of February.

Plates issued from March to August always refer to the year. Plates issued after that take the last two digits of the year and add 50. For example, in 2001 it was 51 and in 2020 it’s 70.

This will continue until 2050, when the second set of numbers will reach 00, and there will no doubt be another number shuffle or character added.

The numbers are always followed by a random selection of three letters that make your car uniquely identifiable.

Why do UK registration plates all look the same?

Under the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, all UK registration plates must conform to British Standards. Your number plate must be:

  • Illuminated at night and have a reflective background (although classic car owners are allowed to retain their black plates).

  • Clearly seen, with no bolts/fixings or dirt obscuring the characters.

  • Easy to read, with colour, font and spacing which meets Department of Transport regulations.

  • Positioned correctly with a white plate at the front of the vehicle and a yellow plate at the back.

What makes UK registration plates illegal?

Any modifications to registration plates – such as italics or different colours – are illegal, and drivers can be issued with a fixed penalty fine of up to £1000, have their registration withdrawn and their car may fail its MOT. In other words, your plates are not the place to be creative – so hold off on the Comic Sans.

Can you put flags on UK registration plates?

However, you are allowed to express your national pride. New rules introduced in 2009 allowed drivers in England, Scotland and Wales to display union flags, St George’s crosses, saltires and dragons on their number plates, along with the letters ‘GB’, ‘UK’, ‘ENG’, ‘SCO’, ‘CYMRU’ or ‘WALES’.

You can also display the EU symbol if you’re planning to drive in Europe, and legally there is currently no obligation for drivers with the EU badge to get replacement plates after Brexit.

Why are certain letters and combinations never used in a number plate?

There are some letters that didn’t make the cut, simply because they look too similar to numbers. Between 1963 and 2001, ‘I’ and ‘Z’ were restricted as a suffix (and then later a prefix) for Irish use only and and ‘U’ wasn’t used for this purpose due to its similarity to V’. From 2001 onwards, ‘Z’ has been allowed to be used as part of the final three letters on non-Irish registrations.

Are there any banned number plates?

Anything to do with violence, sex or discrimination is automatically banned, while number plates that slip through the net can be rescinded at a later date.

As far back as the 1930s, when the three-letter format was introduced, some combinations of numbers and letters were taken out of circulation for spelling offensive or inappropriate words. The DVLA is still careful to remove any dodgy combinations or unintentional meanings that that might make the plate sought after at auction. For example, 2018’s classic ‘BR18 ERY’ and ‘RO18 BER’ were immediately ditched. However, as the letter selection is randomised, it’s more likely that your registration won’t spell out an actual word.

What about number plates in Northern Ireland?

Irish number plates are made up of three letters, followed by up to four digits and contain either the letter I or Z.

Combinations of letters are allocated to specific areas in Northern Ireland.

They can be used on vehicles anywhere in the UK, and not just restricted to Northern Ireland.

They are issued by the DVLA, like all UK number plates.

What about private and personalised plates?

If you really want to make your car’s plates one of a kind, personalised plates are available from the DVLA, via auction or online. When you’ve paid for the plates, you’ll receive a V750 certificate of entitlement to prove that you can put it on your vehicle. Be wary when buying a car with plates like this, however, because they can be used to hide the age of a vehicle.

What is a green number plate?

'A green number plate' will often be found on a new fully electric car, or one powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.

Introduced in December 2020, these number plates have a green flash on the left-hand side of the reg plate to indicate the car’s zero tailpipe emission credentials.

However, you can decide not to have the green flash on your plate if you don't fancy it. It is likely that most dealers will fit them as standard on newly-sold electric cars.

History of the BMW M1

The 1970s was a time of change in the automotive industry.

Taking advantage of the advancements in technology, many manufacturers launched memorable models with bolder designs, including BMW, who captured the public’s imagination with their renowned 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series.

But did you know they also built one of the most unique and memorable sports cars ever?

The BMW M1 is a car so rare that, even to this day, its futuristic design and history leave many wondering what might’ve been. Having been praised as one of the most memorable sports cars ever produced, the highly sought-after M1 was a project that almost didn’t come to fruition. Following their near bankruptcy in the 1950s, the 1970s saw critical acclaim come BMW’s way. With a bolstered line-up, the marque decided to go one step further.

BMW’s recently formed Motorsport division, headed by Jochen Neerpasch, planned a new car programme. Not just a car but a full-on racer that could take on their rival, Porsche. Neerpasch wanted to revive BMW’s mid-engine sports car concept, which dates to the early seventies. The mid-engine layout was chosen to outclass the competition. Their desire to compete in motorsports initiated the project, and by the mid-1970s, the M1 was born. Intended both as a road car and a race car, the ‘M’ denoted the Motorsport division and the ‘1’ signified the car’s importance in engineering history.

The M1 was the first mid-engine BMW to be mass-produced and held that accolade for over three decades until the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid utilised the same powertrain layout.

The car was also created to represent BMW in a new Manufacturers Championship - FIA Group 5 racing series, initially based on cars with production silhouettes. BMW couldn’t build the 400-road-going car models required by regulation, so they partnered with Italian manufacturer Lamborghini. However, despite its initial tubular steel chassis produced by designer Giampaolo Dallara and seven prototypes being built, Lamborghini ran into financial difficulties, resulting in BMW taking complete control of the project in 1978. Due to the delays and financial difficulties, BMW could no longer compete in the Group 5 racing series and had to settle for Group 4 instead.

BMW opted to build the M1 themselves with the help of renowned Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and a group of former Lamborghini engineers who founded the design firm Ital Engineering. His design was highly innovative. The fibreglass body suited the car's wedge shape perfectly and the retractable headlights were particularly appealing.

Car enthusiasts and critics alike couldn’t get enough of the futuristic design. Its appearance resembled the original Lotus Esprit, a model also designed by Giugiaro. Giugiaro, at the time, said, “The BMW M1 was a very important car for me because it was the first time I had the opportunity to design a mid-engined sports car. I wanted to create a car that was both beautiful and functional, and I think I succeeded with the M1.”

The two-seater sports car was hand-built in Italy and shipped to Stuttgart, where BMW installed the hand-built engines and hardware. Final preparations were carried out in Munich by BMW Motorsport, where each car was given a final tune and road test.

The M1 was only 3.7-feet high and six feet in width. Its aggressive styling was a hit. With its aerodynamic look and low stance, the M1 oozed sports appeal. It was a unique and innovative car ahead of its time – a testament to BMW’s engineering prowess, not to mention performance.

Despite the car's cutting-edge design and numerous accolades, some felt the interior was plain and minimalistic, with some at the time comparing it to the ultimate kit car. The basic dashboard layout was simplistic to operate and provided great functionality. The gear stick and steering wheel were perfectly positioned, as were the half-leather/half-cloth hand-stitched seats. However, those over six feet struggled to get comfortable due to the bulkhead separating the cockpit from the engine bay. As expected, rear visibility wasn’t great, but what did many expect from a road-going race car?

On the road, due to its mid-engine layout and suspension system, the M1 won many over. Its excellent handling and balance, particularly at high speed, made it one of the best sports cars of the era. It gripped the road like glue, helped in part to the brilliant Pirelli P7 tyres, demonstrating excellent downforce and agility. The M1’s aerodynamics came into their own. The response was immediate and direct, with the ZF transaxle producing good acceleration, a comfortable ride, responsive drive, and controlled handling. The M1 was the pinnacle of the hyper fast street cars.

The M1’s M88 powertrain was powered by a 3.5-litre in-line straight six. The road-going model produced a modest 273bhp, while the race model delivered a massive 850bhp. It was the first BMW road car to feature a four-valve-per-cylinder layout, double-overhead cams, and timed mechanical fuel injection. The engine powered two generations of the M5 and the M635CSi coupé. 0 – 60mph was 5.8 seconds, with a top speed of over 160mph, making it the fastest-ever BMW road car at the time.

Only 456 units were ever produced of the M1, making it one of the rarest and most exclusive BMWs ever. 400 were road-legal cars, with 56 being used as race cars. Although BMW eyed Porsche as its main competitor, the De Tomaso Pantera, Maserati Merak, and Lotus Esprit were also popular. However, the Porsche 911 was their most direct competitor due to comparable price and performance.

Production of the M1 ran from 1978 to 1981. The M1 was a critical and commercial success and, to this day, is still considered to be one of the most iconic BMWs ever built. In late 1980, BMW took the decision to stop production of the M1, citing a decline in the exotic sports car market.

To try and salvage its reputation on the racetrack, BMW’s racing pedigree was called into action for the Procar Championship – a series the Formula One Constructors Association ran from 1979 to 1980. The top five qualifiers in each Formula One race would compete against fifteen privateers, all driving M1s. The car finally took to the racetrack in 1979, though it was dogged with failures from the outset. Niki Lauda won the inaugural 1979 season, with the 1980 season by Nelson Piquet.

One of the positives from the disastrous production was that by the time the car got into its stride, requirements for Group 5 racing had changed, which left the M1 all dressed up with nowhere to go. The car did compete in various guises, such as the Le Mans 24-hour race from 1980 to 1986. Despite being fitted with a turbocharger, it gradually became outdated and uncompetitive.

When the road-going M1 went on sale in the UK, it cost an eye-watering £37,500, more than a Ferrari BB512. Its competitors – the De Tomaso Pantera GTS, Porsche 911, and Aston Martin V8 Vantage – were considerably cheaper. Despite not being established, the M1 was more expensive and less reliable than its competitors from the outset.

Buying a used M1 today will set you back more than £500,000.

The BMW M1’s history might be brief, but it lives on in people’s hearts and minds. From critics to enthusiasts, the iconic car was not only ahead of its time, but its innovative styling and uniqueness inspired a generation. BMW’s famous ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’ tagline never felt so apt.

Renault Twingo to return as an affordable compact EV

Who doesn’t love the little Renault Twingo?

Believe it or not, the first generation was launched at the 1992 Paris Motor Show.

And now the French carmaker has confirmed the Twingo name will live again, this time in the shape of an ‘affordable’ EV. Affordable? Well, Renault bosses are planning an entry-point of under €20,000 … that’s around £17,000.

Set to be designed, engineered and produced by Ampere — a new and completely separate division under the Renault Group umbrella, with around 35,000 employees and which focuses solely on electric vehicles for the B and C-segments of the Renault EV market — the new Twingo EV will be built in Europe.

But crucially, because of the low list price, Ampere is already claiming the baby EV will be available from less than €100 per month: that equates to around £90.

We’ve got a little bit of time yet before we see the full production model.

But Renault bosses plan to match the new ‘concept-to-production’ timescale now established by Chinese carmakers; that means the new Twingo is scheduled to arrive super-quick, in 2026. And if it’s anything like the first ‘concept’ images, it’s sure to be a little cracker.

Set to go head-to-head with the likes of the rival Dacia Spring and Citroen e-C3, the new Twingo will sit below the all-electric Renault 5 hatchback and Renault 4 compact SUV.

As you might suspect, no technical details have been revealed yet. However, what the bosses at Renault Group have said is the latest Twingo will be a “fit-for-purpose urban vehicle with no compromise”.

It also claims the car will offer impressive efficiency of 6.2mpkWh and 75%-lower CO2 emissions over its lifecycle than the “average European ICE car sold in 2023”.

Such is the potential significance of the Twingo, Renault Group boss Luca de Meo described the new EV as a "silver bullet for sustainability mobility" and key in the firm's quest for an affordable EV.

De Meo went on to stress the new hatchback will cost 50% less to produce than a new C-segment SUV. Renault plans to achieve this thanks to a reduction in materials and an increased focus on a software-driven platform that will require fewer parts and materials.

2024 Mazda MX-5

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 recently made its public debut at the Japan Mobility Show.

There has been more than 25,000 fourth-generation MX-5s sold in the UK since its launch in 2015.

And now, for the first time since the launch of the current generation MX-5 in 2015, Mazda’s award-winning sports car has received a subtle exterior design change.

The Mazda MX-5 has always been a popular lightweight sports car, and its 2024 version looks to continue to deliver that pure open-top driving pleasure.

Inside, drivers benefit from a new larger central 8.8-inch touch-screen multimedia display and an updated instrument panel. The larger central screen allows for clearer navigation mapping, while the more advanced MZ Connect system helps user functionality, additionally USB-C ports have been introduced. As before, the MX-5 has wireless Apple Car Play.

This year's model has a new frameless rear-view mirror, but the interior retains the same driver focused cabin and driving position.

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 also sees the introduction of additional safety features including Lane-Keep Assistance and Intelligent Speed Assistance on all models.

Prices are still to be confirmed but the 2024 model will arrive in the UK in March.

The eight-model range features an unchanged engine line-up with both the Roadster and Retractable Fastback RF models offered with a choice of 1.5-litre 132ps and 184ps 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engines. Across both body styles, the Prime-Line model is matched to the 1.5-litre engine, the Exclusive-Line can be ordered with both the 1.5 and 2.0-litre engines, while the range-topping Homura sold exclusively with the 2.0-litre engine.

Across all models, the new Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) track driving mode avoids intervention until a later parameter to deliver a more dynamic, yet secure, drive experience with first-time track drivers in mind. Continuing the MX-5’s fine-tuning, the response of the accelerator has been improved to deliver a more accurate throttle application, while the electric power steering has been adjusted and steering rack friction reduced to deliver an even more natural and fluid response. The aim was to further enhance the sense of oneness with the car and connection with the road that the MX-5 has always been famed for.

As before 2.0-litre cars with the manual gearbox have a front strut brace, limited slip differential and Bilstein dampers as standard. The 2024 MX-5 features a new Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential - a cam mechanism has been added to the conical clutch, which is lightweight, compact and highly durable. The cam angle is set differently for the deceleration and acceleration side, thereby achieving optimal limiting force of slip during both actions. Strengthening the slip limiting force when the unloaded rear wheel is lightened during cornering enhances stability, moreover tuning the slip limiting force and optimising the set up for the MX-5’s engine, suspension and tyre characteristics ensures the purity of handling balance the MX-5 is famed for.

Commenting on the 2024 Mazda MX-5, Mazda UK Managing Director, Jeremy Thomson, said: ‘When it comes to driver engagement, the current generation MX-5 has established itself as a benchmark sports car, and with the 2024 Mazda MX-5 we continue to offer one of the most exciting and satisfying to drive cars money can buy.

‘Our engineers created a sports car that incorporates our ground-breaking Skyactiv technology, modern safety and superb efficiency with the driver focused enjoyment for which the MX-5 is loved.

‘The MX-5 is Mazda’s brand icon, and it embodies all that is great about our products. Mazda’s unceasing commitment to refining the vehicle over its 30-year history is highlighted again with the subtle but focused updates to the 2024 MX-5, which ensure this car continues to be an affordable, engaging, world-class sports car.’

To mark the new partnership, Arnold Clark 'painted' the Scotland Rugby side's home pitch at Scottish Gas Murrayfield in a clip for social media.

In the video, the grass at Murrayfield has been turned yellow to match the colours of the iconic car dealer.

Fans will have the first chance to see the new front of shirt sponsorship when the 2024/25 Scotland kit is revealed on 2 August.

PCP, PCH or HP? Car finance explained

$

Deciding how to finance your car is an important decision which many of us are increasingly making.

But how much do you know about it?

This guide will talk you through four finance plans available through Arnold Clark – Hire Purchase (HP), Personal Contract Hire (PCH), Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) and Personal Loan (PL) – to help you decide which is right for you.

PCH - what is Personal Contract Hire?

Personal Contract Hire (PCH) is a type of long-term rental that will suit you if you’re not looking to buy the car at the end of your contract and won’t need to change the car before the end of the contract. You lease the car for an agreed period of time by making fixed monthly payments. When the contract expires, you simply return your car.

Pros

  • It’s hassle free, as you can drive away a new car without worrying about how you'll re-sell it.
  • Most leasing companies will offer an option with maintenance built in, eliminating unexpected repair bills.
  • Your monthly payments on the car will be much lower than if you were buying it
  • You will have access to new cars that you may not have been able to afford to buy.

Things to bear in mind

  • There’s no option to buy the car at the end.
  • You will need to agree an annual mileage allowance at the beginning of your contract – there may be a mileage charge if you exceed this.
  • Just like your mobile phone contract, you are tied in for the full duration of the agreement and there may be significant charges if you need to change or stop the contract.

PCP - What is Personal Contract Purchase?

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) is similar to a Hire Purchase agreement as you will usually pay an initial deposit, followed by monthly instalments.

What makes PCP different is that your monthly instalments are paying off the depreciation of the car, and not its entire value, over the course of the term. Then, when you get to the end of your agreement, there is a final, balloon payment that must be made if you want to keep the car.

How does PCP actually work?

At the start of your PCP contract, a Guaranteed Future Value (GFV) of the car is set. This is the car's expected value when your contract ends.

For you, this means that the money you’re repaying is the difference between what the car is worth now and what it will be worth at the end of your contract (the depreciation) plus interest, which is calculated on the full value of the vehicle. You'll pay this difference off in monthly instalments.

Remember: you are still liable for the full amount of the vehicle if anything happens to the car or if you settle early.

This means lower monthly payments for you, but you will need to pay a final payment at the end (the Guaranteed Future Value) if you want to keep the car.

Once your agreement is finished, you’ll have three options:

  1. Buy the car by paying the final balloon payment (the Guaranteed Future Value).
  2. Hand the car back - your finance company has already predicted the Guaranteed Future Value of the car, so handing the car back will settle the deal.
  3. Part exchange for a new car.

Find out more about what happens when PCP car finance ends.

Pros

  • Monthly payments on a car financed by PCP are usually lower than if your car is financed by a Hire Purchase agreement.
  • If you decide not to buy the car, you can simply walk away when you've made all the payments.
  • Similar to PCH, you can drive away a new or used car every few years (dependent on the chosen term) without worrying about selling it on.
  • If your car is worth more than the Guaranteed Future Value then you can use that equity towards a deposit on a new car.

Things to bear in mind

  • If you want to buy the car you will need to pay your final balloon payment (the Guaranteed Future Value).
  • Similar to PCH, you will need to agree on a mileage allowance at the beginning of your contract and there may be excess mileage charges if you exceed this.
  • You won’t be able to sell the car without settling the finance.
  • You won’t own the car until you have made all of your repayments.
  • You’ll need to keep the car properly insured, maintained and in your possession until the full value is paid off.

Can I settle my PCP deal early?

You can normally settle your deal early, however the finance company will require you to pay off the difference between what your car is worth now, and what you still owe (negative equity). On the other hand, you may find that at the end of your term your car is worth more than the Guaranteed Future Value, which means you’ll have some positive equity to contribute towards your next car.

HP - what is Hire Purchase?

If you choose to pay for your car with a Hire Purchase agreement, you will normally pay an initial deposit and will pay off the entire value of the car in monthly instalments. When all the payments are made, the Hire Purchase agreement ends and you own the car.

Pros

  • You’ll be able to drive away a car that you may not have managed to buy outright.
  • Unlike a PCP or PCH contract, you won't need to estimate your mileage at the start of your Hire Purchase agreement, so you'll avoid excess mileage charges.
  • Once you’ve made your final monthly payment, including the option to purchase fee, you'll have full ownership of the car.

Things to bear in mind

  • Monthly payments may be higher than some other finance options, such as PCP, as you're paying off the full value of the car.
  • You won’t be able to sell the car without settling the finance.
  • You won’t own the car until you have made all of your repayments.
  • You’ll need to keep the car properly insured, maintained and in your possession until the full value is paid off.

Personal Loan (PL)

Another way of financing your car purchase is through a personal loan. The amount can be for the full purchase cost of the vehicle you want to buy, or it can be used to make up a shortfall if you plan to pay with cash.

Pros

  • You own the car while you’re paying off your loan. This means you may be able to sell it, but you do have to confirm this with the lender.
  • You may be able to pay a smaller deposit than some finance types.
  • You may be able to make additional payments if you want to pay your loan off sooner, or pay your loan off early in full.
  • You won’t have any annual mileage restrictions, and you don’t have to hand the car back.

Things to bear in mind

  • As with any financial agreement, it’s critical that you’re sure you can make the repayments before you commit to a loan.
  • The lender may require you to repay the loan if you sell the car or it is written off.
  • Monthly payments may be higher than some other finance options, such as PCP, as you're paying off the full value of the car.
