What types of alternative fuel vehicles are there?

$
0
0

It's been confirmed that from 2035, new cars and vans powered wholly by petrol and diesel will not be sold in the UK.

It means huge changes for the automotive industry, with alternative fuel vehicles playing an increasingly important role in the battle against climate change.

Below, we take a look at some of the types of alternative fuel vehicles currently available.

Fully electric (EV or BEV)

An electric vehicle powered by a battery and electric motor only.

Plug-in hybrid (or PHEV)

The ‘plug-in’ part just means you need to plug the car into a charging point to charge its battery. ‘Hybrid’ means the car has both a battery and a normal petrol or diesel engine. A PHEV will typically go about 30 miles on the electric motor only and then the petrol/diesel engine will take over. For short trips, you can drive 100% electric in a PHEV, but for longer trips, you’ll start with electric power and then automatically switch to petrol/diesel. A great benefit of PHEVs is that you are not only relying on your electric battery, and have the comfort of knowing you can fill up quickly at a petrol station and continue your journey if you need to.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

Hybrids (or HEVs)

Hybrids have both a petrol/diesel engine and a battery. However, you can’t plug the car in to charge the battery. HEVs are predominately normal petrol/diesel cars; their very small battery typically either helps the car go further and/or improves its performance (such as acceleration).

The car will often run on the battery alone at low speeds, but as soon as the car needs to go faster, the petrol/diesel engine kicks in. The battery itself charges partly via ‘regenerative braking’ – this means when you press the brake pedal, it makes the electric motor go in reverse and act as a generator.

Hydrogen

The fuel cell is a device that takes chemical energy, in the form of hydrogen, and turns it into electricity that can power an electric motor, just like a battery. So, a hydrogen-powered car is powered with an electric motor.

Bi-fuel

A bi-fuel natural gas vehicle can use either gasoline or natural gas in the same internal combustion engine. Both fuels are stored on board and the driver can switch between the fuels. The vehicle is equipped with separate fuel tanks, fuel injection systems, and fuel lines for both fuels.

The £5 million site opened on Dumbarton Road in Glasgow’s West End in 2021 with the aim of educating visitors about the benefits of alternative fuel vehicles and why they are becoming so important.

There are more than 60 vehicles on site available to test-drive, from plug-in and self-charging hybrids to fully electric vehicles.

You can also learn about the different types of charging and generous government tax and grants available.

Last year we opened a second Innovation Centre in Stafford, England.

2023 Honda CR-V review

$
0
0

Honda’s CR-V was the sixth best-selling car in the world in 2022 – and it’s now even better.

While it retains a family-friendly feel, it’s been given a significant overhaul, ditching the rounded front for a more robust, prominent appearance.

It is 80mm longer, too – and that should make it even more practical.

The front has a more pronounced grille: a hexagonal shape making up the border and the mesh that fills it, while lower down, each side has a carved appearance, creating an athletic and powerful form.

When you check out the engine, powerful is an overstatement, as it's a 2.0-litre four-cylinder producing a so-so 184PS. But that’ll suffice for most, especially given some of that clout comes from electric motors in two hybrid variants.

The bottom two trims are a self-charging hybrid (badged e:HEV), and the top grade is a plug-in hybrid (badged e:PHEV).

All models have 18-inch alloy wheels, with the entry-level Elegance getting a nine-inch Honda Connect infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a digital radio. It also boasts navigation, a 10.2-inch digital instrument display, leather seats, a panoramic glass roof, a heated leather steering wheel, keyless entry/start and a powered tailgate.

A wireless phone charger, LED lights, and a rear-view camera are also included.

The Advance trim adds a head-up display, heated front seats with driver’s-side powered adjustment and memory function. The model also houses a Bose sound system, a multi-view camera and an adaptive driving beam.

The e:PHEV’s grade is Advance Tech and gets black wheels, MyHonda+ (a smartphone app enabling you to control various things remotely, including pre-heating the cabin) and Honda Parking Pilot (which automatically finds a space and parks the car for you).

One curious thing is that while the e:HEV is all-wheel drive, the e:PHEV only comes with front-wheel drive. However, the latter has a tow-driving mode, enabling it to pull up to 1,500kg (braked).

Both hybrids have the same 0-62mph time of 9.4 seconds, which isn't spectacular but adequate for an SUV. Mind you, filling all five spacious seats with adults will make it slower in practice.

There is little to choose between the two hybrids, given both get a thump of torque from a standing start thanks to the electric motors. But it’s only marginally more noticeable in the e:PHEV.

Apart from that, you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference, as the handling is similar in both, even though the e:HEV has all-wheel drive, while the e:PHEV gets adaptive dampers.

Honda has done an excellent job with the car's setup, creating a delicate balance between ride comfort and handling.

There are softer SUVs and better-handling SUVs, but the CR-V seems to suffice in both departments, dumbing down the thuds of potholes well. It is also reasonably engaging to drive.

It isn’t exactly enthralling to take around a bend - if anything, it'll understeer and generate a bit of lean if you take corners too quickly. But it's okay if you're not being stupid on a mountainous B-road.

Inside, the CR-V’s interior is impressive. It offers plenty of colour variation, with piano black, brushed aluminium and dark greys, with a hexagonal mesh pattern along the dashboard.

The infotainment system, which peeps over the top, is well laid out and intuitive. That said, the lack of a rotary controller makes things tricky while driving.

Nevertheless, there are helpful shortcut buttons, while physical dials for the climate control have been retained so you’re not jabbing the screen on the move if it’s too hot or cold.

The digital instrument display replaces the traditional analogue dials, and it's equally lovely to look at. However, the lack of customisation regarding the information displayed is a downside.

Overall, though, the interior is very nice and has a sophisticated feel.

The additional 80mm in the car’s length means the cabin is very big, so you won’t be struggling for headroom or legroom whether you’re in the front or back. A high driving position will also impress would-be SUV owners, while boot space is a generous 596 litres in the e:HEV.

It is rare that the plug-in model gets more, but that's the case in the CR-V, with the e:PHEV getting 635 litres.

You can trade off boot space for even more legroom in the rear by sliding the bench forwards and backwards, while tall people can gain even more headroom by reclining it.

These are plus points, but the rear seats only fold down in a 60:40 configuration rather than the more customisable 40:20:40 split. That said, the boot is so big that you’d rarely need to fold the seats down anyway.

A 17.7kWh battery is what you’ll be replenishing if you choose the e:PHEV. But Honda has limited the charging speed to 6.8kW, taking two-and-a-half hours to do a full top-up with empty batteries.

That means a 7kW home wallbox will be enough to achieve the maximum rate, but it won’t top up any faster if you plug it into a lightning-quick public charger.

Honda claims an all-electric range of 50 miles but expect less than that in practice.

Combining an engine and electric motor means you’ll achieve a whopping 353mpg in the e:PHEV, emitting just 18g/km of CO2.

That will please company car users who want to maximise savings by being in a low band for Benefit in Kind tax, which is far kinder to those driving economical cars.

The e:HEV can’t get near it, returning 42mpg, emitting 151g/km of CO2, but that’s still good for a big-ish SUV with a petrol unit.

The new CR-V should be reliable, too, with Honda generally scoring well in this department.

There is no Euro NCAP safety rating yet, but Honda focuses a lot on this area, so there should be no concerns.

The CR-V comes with Honda Sensing 360, which provides 360-degree monitoring of cross traffic and blind spots, plus lane-keeping and lane-departure assists. The vehicle also vaunts traffic sign recognition, driver attention monitoring and automatic emergency braking.

Additionally, front and rear parking sensors are included on all models, plus the rear-view or multi-view camera, depending on the trim.

If the old CR-V was the sixth most popular car on the planet, the 2023 CR-V should (in theory) move it up the list.

The price might prevent that, as hybrids aren’t cheap, but rivals' lower prices are deceptive, as you won't get this level of standard equipment with most of them.

Honda ought to have made it a seven-seater to appeal to larger families. But, apart from that, the only drawback is the lack of all-wheel drive in the e:PHEV, given the e:HEV has it as standard, although it's no significant loss unless you need it.

The 2023 Honda CR-V is roomy, highly practical, lovely to sit in, comfortable and performs reasonably well on the road. Plus, it’s very economical, particularly in plug-in hybrid form.

A team of Arnold Clark employees were crowned dancing champions at the weekend after they won a charity’s Strictly Come Dancing-inspired event.

'Strictly Beatson' was held at the DoubleTree Hilton Glasgow Central on Saturday 7th October and was hosted by TV and radio presenter, Bryan Burnett.

Nearly 600 guests arrived on the night to support the five teams battling it out to win.

Alongside Arnold Clark, four other teams took part in the event organised by Beatson Cancer Charity.

The theme of the event was ‘Movie Night’, which coincided with Strictly Come Dancing’s Movie Night on Saturday.

A total of £73,408 was raised by guests at the event and by all the teams, who fundraised alongside their dance rehearsals.

Team Arnold Clark was made up of employees from Head Office, including Senior Recruitment Administrator Ciara Cannon, Software Engineer Ed Fallon, Head of Affiliate & Product Marketing Jennifer Fionda, Digital Employee Experience Project Lead Jon Cuthbertson, People Advisor Rebecca Bailey and Recruitment Operations Manager William Forrest. Their dance professionals were Donna Littlejohn and Marcus Littlejohn and they danced to songs from the movie Top Gun.

The judges picked Team Arnold Clark and Team Fuelfit as the final two teams to go head-to-head in the dance-off to become the champions. The judges then chose Team Arnold Clark as their winners.

Team Arnold Clark managed to raise over £21,000 for Beatson Cancer Charity during their time rehearsing for the event.

Following their win, Team Arnold Clark said: 'We're all absolutely delighted to win, we're still on cloud nine.

'Training with the team over the last 20 weeks has been brilliant and we've loved every minute of it. We really appreciate the support and donations we've received - we're extremely grateful.

'It's an honour to be crowned champions, but at the end of the day, the charity is the real winner and we're so happy to be able to support the amazing work Beatson Cancer Charity does.

'Well done to everyone who took part and a big thank you to everyone who helped make it such a memorable evening!'

Beatson is an internationally renowned cancer centre that offers specialist care to those suffering from cancer, as well as providing funding for specialists and cancer research. With centres across the UK, Beatson helps thousands of patients every year.

Susan Brodie, Events Manager at Beatson Cancer Charity, added: 'We are so grateful to all five teams and their professional dancers for the immense amount of hard work and training they put into their performances in their own free time.

'They all worked so hard on their dance while also fundraising for our charity.

'The event was a huge success and raised an incredible amount of money which will go towards supporting so many patients and their families.'

The all-new Škoda Kodiaq

The Škoda Kodiaq has been upgraded - and this large SUV could be the perfect option for big families.

Škoda launched the first generation of the Kodiaq back in 2016 and the model has turned the brand into a true global player.

With its dynamic crystalline design, spaciousness, advanced technology and many clever features, it has won more than 40 prestigious awards in recent years.

Now, the second generation of the Kodiaq has arrived, and it boasts a powerful appearance, innovative new features and even more space.

So, what does it look like?

The second-generation Kodiaq has a sculpted bonnet, sporting a revised Škoda logo with a matt dark chrome finish.

It matches the frame of the hexagonal Škoda grille, which can be optionally illuminated with 14 light elements forming a light strip between the headlamps.

The all-new Kodiaq comes in Selection and Sportline versions, as well as with various Design Selections, and rolls on large alloy wheels with diameters ranging from 17 – 20 inches.

It’s available in nine different colours, including seven metallic paint finishes.

And what about the inside?

The Kodiaq features a new interior concept, where the infotainment display has a 13-inch diagonal screen and is now free-standing.

The selector lever is now mounted on the steering column, which lends the centre console a very clean and tidy look.

The new Phone Box enables inductive charging of two smartphones at a time, delivering 15W of power while also cooling the devices during the charging process.

The interior of the Kodiaq is focused on sustainability. All textiles used for the seat upholstery, the carpets in the cabin and the luggage compartment, as well as the headliner, are made of 100% recycled polyester, or, in the case of the Design Selection Lounge, a combination of recycled yarns with 40 percent natural wool. The leather featured in the ecoSuite Design Selection is tanned in an environmentally friendly way using residues from coffee bean processing. Two iconic Simply Clever details, the umbrella and the ice scraper, are also made from sustainable materials.

What about the bootspace?

Luggage capacity has also increased: in the five-seater version, it has grown by 75 litres to 910 litres without folding the rear seats down. With the rear seats folded down, maximum capacity has increased by 40 litres to 2,105 litres.

The seven-seater now holds 340 litres behind the third row of seats, 70 more than before, and 845 litres with the third-row seats folded down. This is an increase of 80 litres. The seven-seater’s maximum cargo capacity is now 2,035 litres, 30 litres more than in the first generation.

Is it diesel, petrol or electric?

The new Kodiaq is available with two diesel and two petrol engines delivering outputs from 110 kW (150 hp) to 150 kW (204 hp).

A new addition to the range is the Kodiaq’s first ever plug-in hybrid powertrain. It offers a system output of 150 kW (204 hp) and an all-electric range of more than 60 miles.

On top of that, the 1.5 TSI with 110 kW (150 hp) marks the debut of mild-hybrid technology in the Kodiaq. The 2.0 TSI with 150 kW (204 hp) and the 2.0 TDI top diesel with 142 kW (193 hp) come with all-wheel drive as standard.

All powertrains in the new Kodiaq are mated to a DSG automatic transmission as standard.

What about the new technology?

New assistance systems in the second-generation Kodiaq increase safety and comfort for drivers and passengers.

Among these features are Turn Assist, Collision Avoidance Assist, Crossroad Assist, Exit Warning, Automated Emergency Braking – pedestrian rear, and Intelligent Park Assist.

There’s also remote parking from outside the vehicle. The new Intelligent Park Assist can automatically park the Kodiaq in end-on and parallel parking spaces. It now also controls the vehicle’s speed in addition to the steering and stops automatically if the system detects an obstacle.

Is the Kodiaq popular?

Since 2016, 841,900 Kodiaqs have been produced and have found customers in 60 markets worldwide.

In Europe, it has proved particularly popular in Škoda’s biggest single market, Germany, followed by the UK and the Czech Republic. In 2022, the Kodiaq was the brand’s second best-selling SUV, just behind the Kamiq.

Kia unveil EV5 and two concept models

Kia has unveiled three new small to medium-sized electric models at its first annual 'Kia EV Day' in Korea.

The event featured the debut of the EV5, a compact electric SUV for modern families, as well as the introduction of two concept models.

The Kia Concept EV3 aims to deliver the same features of the recently launched EV9 in a compact SUV, while the Kia Concept EV4 is an electric saloon with a stunning and striking design.

Kia also announced its vision of ‘EVs for all’ and the company's strategy to significantly and rapidly expand its EV model line-up.

The brand aims to introduce smaller EVs, like the EV5, EV4, and EV3 (with prices ranging from roughly £29,000 to £45,000), in a bid to help accelerate the adoption of EVs around the world.

The Kia EV5 SUV

The Kia EV5 draws inspiration from the recently launched and larger EV9 SUV, with a similar extensive interior space.

The EV5’s spacious, light, well-ventilated cabin boasts cutting-edge infotainment and connectivity technology, while physical buttons are kept to a minimum.

The standard model, equipped with a 64kWh battery pack and a 160kW motor, is expected to have a driving range of around 330 miles per charge.

It will have a regenerative braking system and an i-Pedal system that allows drivers to both slow down and accelerate using a single pedal.

Meanwhile, the reclining seats are designed to prevent back and spine discomfort with their continuously adjustable back angle.

The Kia Concept EV3

The Kia Concept EV3 represents the brand’s vision for an electric compact that effortlessly blends practicality with the sheer joy of driving.

Perched on squared wheel arches, it has a unique shape, with the windscreen pushed forward and a long sloping roofline.

Inside the car, Kia wanted to create an environment that promotes emotional wellbeing, which includes advanced ergonomic seat design and soft mood lighting.

The folding bench-type rear seat is flexible and can be effortlessly folded upward, allowing for storing bulky luggage such as electric scooters and bicycles.

The Kia Concept EV4

Its four-door format might suggest it should be categorised as a saloon, but the Kia Concept EV4 is certainly innovative.

With a sleek low nose, an elongated shape and roof spoiler, it has all the attributes reminiscent of sports and racing cars.

The interior features a spacious horizontal layout, incorporating stylish design elements that prioritise the driver's experience without obstructing their view. To achieve this, Kia designers have placed an air conditioning control panel that can be neatly stored away in the centre console when it's not being used.

BMW lifts the wraps from its 2024 X2 coupé-SUV

$

BMW has lifted the wraps from its second-generation X2, ahead of first UK deliveries which are scheduled for March next year. Order books are now open at Arnold Clark BMW dealerships. Boasting new coupé-SUV looks and a larger footprint, the 2024 X2 will go head-to-head with the likes of the Audi Q3 and, now with the option of electric power in the iX2, it’ll also rival the Audi Q4 E-tron.

Bigger in every dimension – the new X2 is 200mm longer, 21mm wider and 64mm taller than the original model – it now also boasts more boot space, up by a not insignificant 115 litres. There’s also more leg room for rear passengers.

Externally, the latest version not only sees the X2’s signature kidney grille grow in dimension, but it can now be highlighted by an optional ring of LED running lights dubbed Iconic Glow.

The car’s aerodynamics have been improved by the incorporation of active cooling flaps into the grille which automatically close when not required. As you would expect, on the electric iX2, the grille is completely sealed off. This further boosts aerodynamic performance and extends its range between charges.

Further aerodynamic work under the body has resulted in a drag coefficient 0.02 below that of the petrol model, at 0.25. This in turn has contributed to a WLTP-certified range of up to 279 miles for the all-electric version, which is an improvement on the straight-backed iX1 with which it shares its platform.

Power for the iX2 comes from a 64.8kWh battery which feeds its dual-motor, four-wheel-drive package and delivers 309bhp and 364lb/ft of torque, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 5.6 seconds. Like the iX1, the iX2 has a maximum charging rate of 130kW on DC connections, meaning a 10% – 80% top-up from a suitably fast DC rapid charger should take just 29 minutes. Significantly, BMW states the iX2 can charge at full speed more consistently than its previous EVs thanks to revised software.

Fast though the iX2 is, the quickest model in the range is actually the petrol M35i, which sees the baby sports SUV deliver a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds from its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. This sends 296bhp and 295lb/ft to all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox and a mechanical limited-slip differential.

Inside the cabin, the M35i swaps the standard leather seats found elsewhere in the X2 range for Alcantara bucket seats. Across the range, every new X2 gets the latest version of BMW’s iDrive system, which is displayed across a 10.25-inch digital dial display and a 10.7-inch touchscreen.

Prices? The 2024 X2 range starts at £39,365, which will get you the sDrive20i; its 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and small electric motor delivers 168bhp. The attractive package sees it hit 62mph from standstill in 8.3 seconds, with fuel consumption averaging between 43.5-47.1mpg on the WLTP cycle, and CO2 emissions of between 136/km and 148g/km.

The M35i will set you back £47,395, while the range-topping iX2 carries a premium at £56,540.

End of the road as Volkswagen retires the up!

$
0
0

Volkswagen has confirmed it will cease production before the end of 2023 of its award-winning and much-loved supermini, the up!. Now, I know there will be a hugely sensible business argument to justify the car’s demise, but its timing seems strange when, around the world — and certainly across Europe and the UK — running a supermini has never made more sense.

Of course, already this year we’ve seen Ford end production of its iconic Fiesta. And given that many of the up!’s original competitors, including the Toyota Aygo, Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108 – as well as the Škoda Citigo and SEAT Mii, both of which were similar boxy city cars built by the Volkswagen Group – have also been retired, I guess it was just a matter of time before a similar fate befell the baby Volkswagen.

The good news is that, though production will cease, there are a number of pre-configured cars already in dealer stock and available to buyers. Contact your local Arnold Clark Volkswagen dealership for details if you’re interested.

Plus, there’s always a terrific selection of excellent pre-owned up! models available on ArnoldClark.com. Last time I looked, there were 46 models available, ranging from entry-level models to the brilliant GTI.

The up! was introduced in 2011, and I remember attending the international launch in Rome where the supermini’s terrific combination of size, interior space, versatility and stylish good looks made it the perfect city car. And having lived with my own up! for more than three years, I have to admit I have a personal soft spot for the wee Volkswagen; for me it remains the perfect city runabout and was actually used more often than I had originally planned.

When it first went on sale in the UK, prices started at less than £8,000. By the time the order books closed, that price had risen to around £15,000. Until very recently it was offered in the UK in a choice of three- or five-door configurations, though the only engine available was a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol that produced 64bhp.

Of course, the one everyone aspired to was the sporty up! GTI, which always looked brilliant in red. It was powered by a 113bhp version of the same three-pot engine and was/is a hoot to drive.

And remember, Volkswagen introduced an all-electric up!, the e-up!. The name always made us journos laugh, as we referenced the Yorkshire colloquial greeting of ey-up. I know; simple things make us smile.

The Volkswagen e-up! was launched in 2013, well before the current craze for EVs, and swapped the petrol unit for an all-electric motor which produced 81bhp and 210Nm of torque. Powered by its 18.7kWh battery, it had a range of just 83 miles. But the pioneering EV was updated in 2020 when it was fitted with a larger 32.3kWh battery, almost doubling the range to 159 miles. In my mind, the e-up! is now the perfect city car.

So as the up! bows out, Volkswagen’s smallest car on sale is now the Polo supermini. How long that will remain on the market is uncertain as speculation surrounds its future.

So, what of Volkswagen’s small car future? The good news is it isn’t abandoning the sector completely, but you’ll probably need to wait till around 2025/26 before you can get your hands on the new pure electric ID.2, which will be the production version of the Volkswagen ID.2all concept which was unveiled in March.

Arnold Clark wins ‘Innovation’ award at prestigious awards ceremony for second year running

Arnold Clark is delighted to have been honoured at this year's Auto Trader Retailer Awards.

The company picked up the 'Innovation' prize for the second year in a row at last week's prestigious awards ceremony in London.

Having won the same category in 2022, Arnold Clark was recognised for 'successfully implementing an innovation that’s bettered their business in the last year.'

In July 2022, Arnold Clark opened a second Innovation Centre in Stafford, England, following the success of its first site in Glasgow.

At the Innovation Centres, visitors can find out about the benefits of alternative fuel vehicles and why they are becoming so important.

Visitors can also learn about the different types of charging and generous government tax and grants available for those thinking of moving to electric.

Hazel Shields, Innovation Centre Manager, said: 'It's an honour to pick up this award for the second year in a row.

'Our teams at both the Glasgow and Stafford Innovation Centres work extremely hard to create a space where our customers can learn more about how new technology is shaping the way we drive.

'As a company, Arnold Clark has always shown a commitment to innovation and we're really excited to continue with our journey to electric, which will include the roll-out of the Arnold Clark Charge network.'

Auto Trader’s Chief Executive Officer, Nathan Coe, added: 'We were delighted to come together under one roof in the capital and put on an incredible event for our automotive retail partners to recognise the very best in the industry.

'All these retailers, brands and individuals inspire others in the industry on a daily basis and set the bar for all retailers across all sectors.

'The industry has and is changing at a pace, but again, we see the huge innovation and agility of retailers, so it’s a privilege to be able to celebrate those businesses that are truly driving our industry forward for the benefit of both their counterparts and their customers.'

We drove 600 miles across Scotland in an electric vehicle - here's how we got on

$
0
0

Almost 600 miles. Two days. One electric vehicle.

That was the challenge facing us when we took part in Greenfleet's EV Rally of Scotland, more commonly known as EVROS.

During the two-day event, the 13 teams participating would be testing the country's electric vehicle charging network as well their own EV's efficiency.

But at the end of the challenge, what would be left feeling more drained: the EV’s battery or the drivers?

As main sponsors, Arnold Clark entered two teams: Arnold Clark Charge and Arnold Clark Innovation.

And when it comes to embracing the electric revolution, Arnold Clark is leading the way.

The Group has opened Innovation Centres in Glasgow and Stafford, where visitors can learn more about the future of driving as well as test-drive some of the most popular EVs on the market.

Arnold Clark has also recently announced plans to install over 500 EV chargers across the UK in an investment worth £23 million – also known as the Arnold Clark Charge network.

But back to EVROS - and it was an early start as the cars gathered on the 'grid' to set off from the Glasgow Innovation Centre at 8am.

Team Charge consisted of Michael Chan and myself from Arnold Clark's Marketing and Communications departments. We were driving a Hyundai IONIQ 5, while Debbie Hubner (Arnold Clark's Senior Sustainability Officer) and Hazel Shields (Glasgow Innovation Centre Manager) got behind the wheel of a Kia EV6 for Team Innovation.

During the two-day event, all teams were required to 'check in' to 11 different stops across Scotland by using a QR code. The winner of EVROS would then be decided by calculating each team's miles per kilowatt hour (m/kWH).

Our advice from Greenfleet, the organisers, was to adopt a 'splash ‘n dash' or 'grazing' approach to charging in order to prevent queuing or delays. In simple terms, get to 80% charge and move on.

Our first stop on day one was the EV Hub outside of Falkirk FC's stadium.

Of course, we didn't need to charge here - our IONIQ 5 had a range of almost 300 miles - but it was interesting to see what type of role these 'hubs' will play over the next few years.

At Falkirk's EV hub, there were ten devices and 25 connectors available, plus, it was under roof cover, similar to a petrol station.

And thankfully, the next stop was another EV hub in Dundee. The fourth hub, opened in April by the city's council, compromised of five chargers - four rapid (50kW) and one ultra-rapid (150kW).

Again, the units were all under cover and fully accessible, but it did have some added extras to help its claim of being 'a service station of the future'. As well as having solar-powered canopies, drivers can fill up their water bottles with a machine that dispenses purified rainwater. Pretty cool!

To be honest, it's how I'd picture most charging stations to be – plenty of units to connect to and protected from the Scottish weather. But as I found out later in the trip, it's not always like that.

After topping up at Dundee, while we stopped for lunch, there was no need to charge at checkpoints three and four in Braemar and Aberdeen respectively.

While we were on the road, it had us questioning – in terms of driving, is there much difference between an EV and a traditional internal combustion engine?

Not really! Well, of course an EV is quieter, but if anything, it’s almost more fun to drive. Its instant torque means it’s easy to gain speed or overtake, if necessary.

We were spending the night in Aviemore, and it’s here where the negativity around EVs is perhaps justified.

With just over 20% charge left, we were hoping to find a charger so we could set off first thing the next morning.

However, according to ZapMap – the app which plots out the UK’s charging network, the only ultra-rapid charger was out of use.

You can only hope that, if the future of the automotive industry is electric, then the charging network will continue to grow.

We decided to wait until the morning and go to our first checkpoint of day two in Inverness – Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC’s stadium. Unfortunately, the rest of the EVROS participants had the same idea!

With only a few units available, we decided to use ZapMap to plot another stop. And it’s here we ran into another problem with charging EVs – the cost.

Most EV drivers will tell you that planning is key when it comes to charging. However, if you’re in a rush or have somewhere to be, unfortunately, you’re still at the mercy of which chargers are available.

The charger which we found worked out at £0.95 per kWh for 7kW. Now, to put that into context, on average, the other chargers we had come across earlier in our trip were nearly half that price.

With that in mind, we didn’t charge for too long and headed on to our next checkpoint in Inverness.

Again, we ran into another slight hiccup.

Not surprisingly, in these smaller locations, there’s only a handful of ultra-rapid chargers. We were lucky enough to hook up to one and decided to go for a walk and enjoy some fish and chips in the sunshine while we charged.

Now, this is where we’ll hold our hands up. According to EV charging etiquette - and the rules - you’re only meant to use this type of charger for 45 minutes or you’ll be hit with a fine.

We returned to our car 23 minutes over our allotted 45 minutes and were faced with a fellow EV driver, who, to put it mildly, wasn’t happy with us overstaying our welcome.

Like I said, hands up, it’s our fault. But we did get charged for it, and who’s to say there won’t ever be a legitimate reason for a driver to miss their return deadline.

Anyways, we made our way back down to Glasgow, and again, the drive was seamless.

Our ‘efficiency’ for over the two days was 3.9 miles per kWH, which is pretty impressive. We weren’t too worried about the common myths that you can’t drive fast or have the air conditioning on without your battery taking a massive hit.

When we reached our final destination, Glasgow’s Riverside Museum, it was time to reflect on our journey.

Are drivers and, most importantly, the infrastructure ready to go electric?

As I said, the EV charging network is continuing to grow on a daily basis, and with projects such as the Arnold Clark Charge network becoming more commonplace, charging options for drivers are only going to get better and more readily available.

And of course, thanks to companies like Bumblebee, there’s also a wide range of home chargers available and ready for installation, which will help battle range anxiety.

My biggest learning? Try an EV for yourself before making your mind up. Places like the Innovation Centres, where you can test-drive the latest models on the market, are perfect to experience electric cars and what they have to offer.

The sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles in the UK will stop in the near future. But obviously, that doesn’t mean that they won’t be around in the used car market for a while after that.

At the moment, moving to electric might not be for everyone. However, there’s no denying it’s the future.

It’s not a question of if you will drive an electric car, it’s a case of when you will drive an electric car.

And the sooner we prepare for the change, the easier it will be to embrace it.

Mazda MX-30 R-EV review

Mazda’s all-electric MX-30 has a lot of positives, but one significant negative: on a full charge, it will cover only around 100 miles.

Frustrating, because the actual MX-30 is an attractive proposition. So now, Mazda has solved the range deficiency by making it a petrol-engine plug-in hybrid – and at the core of its reinvention is a rotary engine. I know; who would have thought? The rotary is back, in the form of the MX-30 R-EV!

The rotary engine, of course, is synonymous with Mazda, as it remains the only mainstream car manufacturer to put it into mass production. Think of some of its most iconic cars — the stunning Cosmo, the RX-7 and RX-8 — and under the bonnet was a rotary, or Wankel for those in the know, engine.

We’ll come back to the design and interior of the MX-30 R-EV later, as it’s essentially identical to that of the all-electric version we drove in October 2020.

First, we’ll focus on the wonders of the rotary engine, without getting too techie, and explain why the new plug-in hybrid now has an attractive range of more than 400 miles. Yup, 400 miles.

Ok, how does it all work?

In typical Mazda fashion: ingeniously. In simple terms, the rotary engine provides energy for the electric motor which actually drives the front wheels. It never powers the front wheels directly itself, so the R-EV is always powered by electric. Clever, eh?

One of the main benefits of the rotary is its ability to deliver power smoothly. It’s also small in terms of size and weight. In the R-EV, the new-generation 830cc petrol rotary engine features a single rotor with a 120mm radius and 76mm width. Producing 73bhp, it essentially works solely as a generator to charge the battery pack.

The rotary engine works in tandem with a 17.8 kWh battery pack and a 167bhp electric motor. Tipping the scales 150kg heavier than the all-electric model, combined with the fact the R-EV’s battery is half the size of that found in the ‘standard’ MX-30 EV, the new hybrid has an electric-only range of 53 miles.

Isn’t that range less than half of the pure EV?

Correct. But, and it’s a significantly large but, you will never suffer range anxiety with the MX-30 R-EV. Deplete the battery fully and you can bask in the knowledge that the battery can be charged on the move using the rotary engine, maintaining and even increasing charge while you’re driving. It’s such a clever solution. And remember, Mazda says the full range for the R-EV is over 400 miles.

Ok, tell me more!

You can maintain the state of charge yourself when you’re driving. There are three drive modes on the R-EV: Normal, EV and Charge.

In essence, they’re pretty self-explanatory. Flick to Normal mode and the R-EV will aim to maintain close to a 45% battery charge to always make sure there’s enough punch available; in EV mode the car will run on e-power only until the battery is completely depleted; and Charge allows you to reserve a certain amount of battery charge to meet your specific requirements later in your journey.

Then, when the battery level drops to the point you set in Charge mode, dips to 45% in Normal mode or depletes completely in EV mode, the rotary kicks in. Should the battery slide to zero — meaning the range extender will kick in to maintain enough power to keep the car moving — the top speed is restricted to 81mph, instead of 87mph.

Plus, of course, the R-EV model can also be charged in the traditional manner. A 20% – 80% charge on a home 7.2kW charger will take around 90 minutes. That falls to 50 minutes on an 11kW unit, and 25 minutes on a 36kW DC charger.

Mazda quotes 282.5mpg … really?

Yes, that’s what they quote, and actually, it’s possible to get pretty close to it. We know that all plug-in hybrids need minimal use of the petrol engine and regular charging to achieve anywhere near the claimed figures.

But on my drive, I did see a mightily impressive 4.7mi/kWh from the battery. What does that mean? To compare that to the traditional mpg figure, you multiply the miles per kWh figure by 40. So, the 4.7mi/kWh equates to 188mpg. And that was without trying.

Isn’t the rotary engine noisy?

Not really. Yes, it’s audible when it kicks in, but it’s only noticeable the first few times because it’s a different sound to what you’re used to hearing in the cabin. In all honesty, it’s little more than a distant hum. If you’ve got the radio on, or are chatting with a passenger, you’ll never notice it. I drove more than 100 miles on my own and after the first 10-15 minutes or so, I never really registered the sound again.

Ok, accelerate hard to overtake something on an A-road, and the noise level increases before backing off as you ease the pressure on the accelerator. But that’s no different to any traditional combustion engine.

What’s it like to drive?

Fun! That's mainly because the electric motor remains responsible for driving the wheels, so power delivery is not only instant, but linear and smooth no matter what the speed. Interestingly, the R-EV is marginally faster from 0-62mph than the all-electric version, taking just over nine seconds.

That peppiness means it’s fantastic for around town. While that was essentially the sole domain for the all-electric version, the R-EV will happily coast along the motorway at the legal max without causing you to nervously monitor the electric range.

And having also driven it on narrow, twisty country roads around Snowdon and North Wales, its supple ride more than adequately absorbs small lumps and bumps while the sharp steering made light of quick changes in direction.

Any changes to the interior?

Not really; the MX-30 R-EV and regular EV are pretty much identical, and to me that’s no bad thing. For a crossover, the cabin feels impressively mature and sophisticated. Build quality remains very impressive and, thanks to the extensive use of physical buttons and switchgear, the onboard tech is very easy to use.

Plus, Mazda’s large rotary dial makes navigating the infotainment system a cinch. And the 8.8-inch central display is beautifully sharp and easy to read.

Does it still have the ‘Marmite’ rear doors?

It certainly does. Personally, I love them. I can appreciate if you need to regularly use the rear seats for passengers, it could be a real pain, given you need to open the front doors before you can open the rear coach doors. Plus, the access gap to the rear seats is also narrow.

But if, as in the majority of cases, the MX-30 is being used solely by the driver, and possibly front passenger, the rear doors are never an issue. And I think they add a brilliantly sleek look to the car’s overall styling.

Is there a choice of trim levels? And prices?

There is. You can choose from three specs. The entry-level is the Prime-Line, which starts from £31,250 and includes a good amount of kit as standard, including the 8.8-inch infotainment system, a separate seven-inch touchscreen for the climate controls, plus lane departure warning, cruise control, head-up display, all-round parking sensors, a reversing camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, LED headlamps and 18-inch alloys.

Next up is the Exclusive-Line, priced from £33,150, and adds Leatherette upholstery, eight-way adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, keyless entry and diamond-cut wheels.

The range-topper is the Makoto trim. Starting at £36,000, it adds a number of luxuries, including an opening sunroof, a 360-degree parking camera setup, a 12-speaker Bose sound system and a heated steering wheel.

So, what’s the verdict?

The introduction of the rotary engine to create a hybrid means the MX-30 R-EV has finally found its true niche. While the all-electric model whetted the appetite, there was always the feeling that there was loads more potential.

The R-EV delivers that in abundance. The MX-30 has always been a good-looking and well-packaged crossover, further enhanced by high-end build quality in the cabin – especially at this price point.

Having driven all three trim levels, the entry-model enjoys the same premium feel as the top-spec models and still comes with a healthy load of kit. For me, I’d happily go for the Prime-Line trim.

The MX-30 R-EV is not just a very good hybrid, it’s a flippin’ good car.

Do electric cars need servicing?

$

0

The automotive industry’s shift to electric very much underway, while the popularity of electric cars is growing by the day.

But if you’re thinking about making the switch to electric, we understand that you might have a few questions about the process.

Here, we take a look at what servicing an all-electric car looks like.

Does an electric vehicle need to be serviced?

While it’s true electric vehicles don’t have a clutch, gearbox, timing belt or spark plugs, the same elements as any other vehicle need to be checked to determine an electric vehicle’s roadworthiness, such as tyres, the braking system and headlights.

However, electric vehicle (EV) drivers will be delighted to know that they no longer need oil changes.

Fundamentally, an electric motor only has two or three moving parts, making it easier to service.

What will a technician look at when servicing an electric vehicle?

  • The charging cable– making sure it’s present and in the right place before carrying out a visual check of its condition.
  • The high-voltage battery– checking the level of charge and recharging the battery if necessary.
  • Components and cables– these will be checked for any damage and to ensure the lines carrying electric power are secured and routed correctly.
  • Brakes and suspension
  • Tyres
  • Lights

How often do electric vehicles need to be serviced?

Like any vehicle, you should always check the manufacturer's guidelines. It’s also a good idea to book seasonal checks to make sure tyres, brakes, lights and other parts of the car are ready for any extreme road conditions.

How long does the battery in an electric vehicle last?

Electric car batteries don’t have a guaranteed length, however, the majority of electric cars come with a battery warranty of eight years or 100,000 miles.

Škoda Superb 2024

$

Škoda has lifted the wraps from its all-new Superb — which will arrive in Arnold Clark showrooms next year — boasting substantial tech upgrades and a revamped cockpit, plus a new plug-in hybrid, badged iV.

The fourth-generation Superb, the company’s flagship model, will be available as a hatchback as well as estate. Buyers will be able to choose from six engines: three petrols, two diesels, and the headline-grabber, the new plug-in hybrid which delivers an all-electric range of 62 miles.

The entry-model is powered by a mild-hybrid 1.5-litre petrol engine, delivering 148bhp. The 201bhp and 262bhp 2.0-litre petrol versions — the latter is four-wheel drive — don’t get mild-hybrid tech. Diesel buyers get a choice of the two-wheel drive 148bhp or the four-wheel drive 190bhp; both are fitted with a 2.0-litre unit.

And while every Superb now comes with a DSG automatic gearbox, operated by a column-mounted shifter to free space on the centre console, it’s the range-topping PHEV which is likely to draw most attention.

Tell me more about the PHEV…

Pairing the 1.5-litre petrol from the entry model with a single electric motor to deliver a combined 201bhp through the front wheels, the pure electric propulsion is powered by a 25.7kWh pack. This can be recharged at a rate of up to 50kW (DC), which means a 10% – 80% charge can be completed in 25 minutes. And the principal story is the fact the power pack delivers more than 60 miles of all-electric range.

… and what about the styling?

Externally, the styling of the 2024 Superb has evolved. The traditional long bonnet still flows into an octagonal grille that dips in the centre, but it now hosts a larger Škoda badge which sits flush. Flanking the grille are new slimmer headlights featuring the latest Matrix LED technology; the result is 40% more light.

There’s a shallower angle of windscreen rake, the roofline has been streamlined, plus the A-pillars now have rain deflectors. The overall result is a more slippery-looking body which, in turn, aids efficiency and improves fuel economy.

At the rear, there are new slimmer rear lights, plus Audi-style scrolling indicators are available on top spec cars. Alloys are also standard across the range, sized from 17-19 inches.

What’s it like inside?

First, look carefully and you’ll spot that the 2024 hatch and estate are now both longer by 43mm and taller by 12mm. According to Škoda boffins, that means an extra 11mm of headroom in the front, 6mm of headroom in the rear and 20 litres more bootspace, now up to 645 litres for the hatch, and by 30 litres in the estate (690 litres). Fold the seats down and this jumps to a cavernous 1,920 litres, and a space almost big enough for a game of five-a-side football.

Inside, the changes and improvements to the cabin are much more revolutionary. Most noticeable is the fact the touchscreen has grown to 13 inches on the top models — 10 inches on models further down the range — and sits proud of the dash. Cleverly, Škoda designers have incorporated a hand rest just underneath. Connectivity for both Apple and Android users is also standard across the range.

Please tell me there are ‘control buttons’

Yup, there is a ‘hallelujah’ moment: not all controls have been incorporated into the touchscreen. There are buttons. Well, actually, three classy-looking Smart Dials which were first seen on the updated Kodiaq SUV. The dials control heating and ventilation and can be customised to work everything from volume to the different driving modes.

Safety tech has also been boosted with a raft of new technology being incorporated, including travel assist, crew protect assist and intelligent park assist.

Pricing?

We’ll have to wait until closer to the end of the year for confirmation of pricing, but expect the Superb range to start around £35,000, which is up from the current entry level of £32,605. But given the significant increase in standard kit and tech, the increase is understandable.

Order books will open at Arnold Clark in January for the estate model, with the iV and hatch following in April ahead of first deliveries in the summer.

History of the BMW M1

$

The 1970s was a time of change in the automotive industry.

Taking advantage of the advancements in technology, many manufacturers launched memorable models with bolder designs, including BMW, who captured the public’s imagination with their renowned 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series.

But did you know they also built one of the most unique and memorable sports cars ever?

The BMW M1 is a car so rare that, even to this day, its futuristic design and history leave many wondering what might’ve been. Having been praised as one of the most memorable sports cars ever produced, the highly sought-after M1 was a project that almost didn’t come to fruition. Following their near bankruptcy in the 1950s, the 1970s saw critical acclaim come BMW’s way. With a bolstered line-up, the marque decided to go one step further.

BMW’s recently formed Motorsport division, headed by Jochen Neerpasch, planned a new car programme. Not just a car but a full-on racer that could take on their rival, Porsche. Neerpasch wanted to revive BMW’s mid-engine sports car concept, which dates to the early seventies. The mid-engine layout was chosen to outclass the competition. Their desire to compete in motorsports initiated the project, and by the mid-1970s, the M1 was born. Intended both as a road car and a race car, the ‘M’ denoted the Motorsport division and the ‘1’ signified the car’s importance in engineering history.

The M1 was the first mid-engine BMW to be mass-produced and held that accolade for over three decades until the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid utilised the same powertrain layout.

The car was also created to represent BMW in a new Manufacturers Championship - FIA Group 5 racing series, initially based on cars with production silhouettes. BMW couldn’t build the 400-road-going car models required by regulation, so they partnered with Italian manufacturer Lamborghini. However, despite its initial tubular steel chassis produced by designer Giampaolo Dallara and seven prototypes being built, Lamborghini ran into financial difficulties, resulting in BMW taking complete control of the project in 1978. Due to the delays and financial difficulties, BMW could no longer compete in the Group 5 racing series and had to settle for Group 4 instead.

BMW opted to build the M1 themselves with the help of renowned Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and a group of former Lamborghini engineers who founded the design firm Ital Engineering. His design was highly innovative. The fibreglass body suited the car's wedge shape perfectly and the retractable headlights were particularly appealing.

Car enthusiasts and critics alike couldn’t get enough of the futuristic design. Its appearance resembled the original Lotus Esprit, a model also designed by Giugiaro. Giugiaro, at the time, said, “The BMW M1 was a very important car for me because it was the first time I had the opportunity to design a mid-engined sports car. I wanted to create a car that was both beautiful and functional, and I think I succeeded with the M1.”

The two-seater sports car was hand-built in Italy and shipped to Stuttgart, where BMW installed the hand-built engines and hardware. Final preparations were carried out in Munich by BMW Motorsport, where each car was given a final tune and road test.

The M1 was only 3.7-feet high and six feet in width. Its aggressive styling was a hit. With its aerodynamic look and low stance, the M1 oozed sports appeal. It was a unique and innovative car ahead of its time – a testament to BMW’s engineering prowess, not to mention performance.

Despite the car's cutting-edge design and numerous accolades, some felt the interior was plain and minimalistic, with some at the time comparing it to the ultimate kit car. The basic dashboard layout was simplistic to operate and provided great functionality. The gear stick and steering wheel were perfectly positioned, as were the half-leather/half-cloth hand-stitched seats. However, those over six feet struggled to get comfortable due to the bulkhead separating the cockpit from the engine bay. As expected, rear visibility wasn’t great, but what did many expect from a road-going race car?

On the road, due to its mid-engine layout and suspension system, the M1 won many over. Its excellent handling and balance, particularly at high speed, made it one of the best sports cars of the era. It gripped the road like glue, helped in part to the brilliant Pirelli P7 tyres, demonstrating excellent downforce and agility. The M1’s aerodynamics came into their own. The response was immediate and direct, with the ZF transaxle producing good acceleration, a comfortable ride, responsive drive, and controlled handling. The M1 was the pinnacle of the hyper fast street cars.

The M1’s M88 powertrain was powered by a 3.5-litre in-line straight six. The road-going model produced a modest 273bhp, while the race model delivered a massive 850bhp. It was the first BMW road car to feature a four-valve-per-cylinder layout, double-overhead cams, and timed mechanical fuel injection. The engine powered two generations of the M5 and the M635CSi coupé. 0 – 60mph was 5.8 seconds, with a top speed of over 160mph, making it the fastest-ever BMW road car at the time.

Only 456 units were ever produced of the M1, making it one of the rarest and most exclusive BMWs ever. 400 were road-legal cars, with 56 being used as race cars. Although BMW eyed Porsche as its main competitor, the De Tomaso Pantera, Maserati Merak, and Lotus Esprit were also popular. However, the Porsche 911 was their most direct competitor due to comparable price and performance.

Production of the M1 ran from 1978 to 1981. The M1 was a critical and commercial success and, to this day, is still considered to be one of the most iconic BMWs ever built. In late 1980, BMW took the decision to stop production of the M1, citing a decline in the exotic sports car market.

To try and salvage its reputation on the racetrack, BMW’s racing pedigree was called into action for the Procar Championship – a series the Formula One Constructors Association ran from 1979 to 1980. The top five qualifiers in each Formula One race would compete against fifteen privateers, all driving M1s. The car finally took to the racetrack in 1979, though it was dogged with failures from the outset. Niki Lauda won the inaugural 1979 season, with the 1980 season by Nelson Piquet.

One of the positives from the disastrous production was that by the time the car got into its stride, requirements for Group 5 racing had changed, which left the M1 all dressed up with nowhere to go. The car did compete in various guises, such as the Le Mans 24-hour race from 1980 to 1986. Despite being fitted with a turbocharger, it gradually became outdated and uncompetitive.

When the road-going M1 went on sale in the UK, it cost an eye-watering £37,500, more than a Ferrari BB512. Its competitors – the De Tomaso Pantera GTS, Porsche 911, and Aston Martin V8 Vantage – were considerably cheaper. Despite not being established, the M1 was more expensive and less reliable than its competitors from the outset.

Buying a used M1 today will set you back more than £500,000.

The BMW M1’s history might be brief, but it lives on in people’s hearts and minds. From critics to enthusiasts, the iconic car was not only ahead of its time, but its innovative styling and uniqueness inspired a generation. BMW’s famous ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’ tagline never felt so apt.

Renault Twingo to return as an affordable compact EV

Who doesn’t love the little Renault Twingo?

Believe it or not, the first generation was launched at the 1992 Paris Motor Show.

And now the French carmaker has confirmed the Twingo name will live again, this time in the shape of an ‘affordable’ EV. Affordable? Well, Renault bosses are planning an entry-point of under €20,000 … that’s around £17,000.

Set to be designed, engineered and produced by Ampere — a new and completely separate division under the Renault Group umbrella, with around 35,000 employees and which focuses solely on electric vehicles for the B and C-segments of the Renault EV market — the new Twingo EV will be built in Europe.

But crucially, because of the low list price, Ampere is already claiming the baby EV will be available from less than €100 per month: that equates to around £90.

We’ve got a little bit of time yet before we see the full production model.

But Renault bosses plan to match the new ‘concept-to-production’ timescale now established by Chinese carmakers; that means the new Twingo is scheduled to arrive super-quick, in 2026. And if it’s anything like the first ‘concept’ images, it’s sure to be a little cracker.

Set to go head-to-head with the likes of the rival Dacia Spring and Citroen e-C3, the new Twingo will sit below the all-electric Renault 5 hatchback and Renault 4 compact SUV.

As you might suspect, no technical details have been revealed yet. However, what the bosses at Renault Group have said is the latest Twingo will be a “fit-for-purpose urban vehicle with no compromise”.

It also claims the car will offer impressive efficiency of 6.2mpkWh and 75%-lower CO2 emissions over its lifecycle than the “average European ICE car sold in 2023”.

Such is the potential significance of the Twingo, Renault Group boss Luca de Meo described the new EV as a "silver bullet for sustainability mobility" and key in the firm's quest for an affordable EV.

De Meo went on to stress the new hatchback will cost 50% less to produce than a new C-segment SUV. Renault plans to achieve this thanks to a reduction in materials and an increased focus on a software-driven platform that will require fewer parts and materials.

2024 Mazda MX-5

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 recently made its public debut at the Japan Mobility Show.

There has been more than 25,000 fourth-generation MX-5s sold in the UK since its launch in 2015.

And now, for the first time since the launch of the current generation MX-5 in 2015, Mazda’s award-winning sports car has received a subtle exterior design change.

The Mazda MX-5 has always been a popular lightweight sports car, and its 2024 version looks to continue to deliver that pure open-top driving pleasure.

Inside, drivers benefit from a new larger central 8.8-inch touch-screen multimedia display and an updated instrument panel. The larger central screen allows for clearer navigation mapping, while the more advanced MZ Connect system helps user functionality, additionally USB-C ports have been introduced. As before, the MX-5 has wireless Apple Car Play.

This year's model has a new frameless rear-view mirror, but the interior retains the same driver focused cabin and driving position.

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 also sees the introduction of additional safety features including Lane-Keep Assistance and Intelligent Speed Assistance on all models.

Prices are still to be confirmed but the 2024 model will arrive in the UK in March.

The eight-model range features an unchanged engine line-up with both the Roadster and Retractable Fastback RF models offered with a choice of 1.5-litre 132ps and 184ps 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engines. Across both body styles, the Prime-Line model is matched to the 1.5-litre engine, the Exclusive-Line can be ordered with both the 1.5 and 2.0-litre engines, while the range-topping Homura sold exclusively with the 2.0-litre engine.

Across all models, the new Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) track driving mode avoids intervention until a later parameter to deliver a more dynamic, yet secure, drive experience with first-time track drivers in mind. Continuing the MX-5’s fine-tuning, the response of the accelerator has been improved to deliver a more accurate throttle application, while the electric power steering has been adjusted and steering rack friction reduced to deliver an even more natural and fluid response. The aim was to further enhance the sense of oneness with the car and connection with the road that the MX-5 has always been famed for.

As before 2.0-litre cars with the manual gearbox have a front strut brace, limited slip differential and Bilstein dampers as standard. The 2024 MX-5 features a new Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential - a cam mechanism has been added to the conical clutch, which is lightweight, compact and highly durable. The cam angle is set differently for the deceleration and acceleration side, thereby achieving optimal limiting force of slip during both actions. Strengthening the slip limiting force when the unloaded rear wheel is lightened during cornering enhances stability, moreover tuning the slip limiting force and optimising the set up for the MX-5’s engine, suspension and tyre characteristics ensures the purity of handling balance the MX-5 is famed for.

Commenting on the 2024 Mazda MX-5, Mazda UK Managing Director, Jeremy Thomson, said: ‘When it comes to driver engagement, the current generation MX-5 has established itself as a benchmark sports car, and with the 2024 Mazda MX-5 we continue to offer one of the most exciting and satisfying to drive cars money can buy.

‘Our engineers created a sports car that incorporates our ground-breaking Skyactiv technology, modern safety and superb efficiency with the driver focused enjoyment for which the MX-5 is loved.

‘The MX-5 is Mazda’s brand icon, and it embodies all that is great about our products. Mazda’s unceasing commitment to refining the vehicle over its 30-year history is highlighted again with the subtle but focused updates to the 2024 MX-5, which ensure this car continues to be an affordable, engaging, world-class sports car.’

Dacia Duster 2024

Dacia has lifted the wraps on the 2024 version of its big seller: the Duster.

And it’s a model which, I believe, many drivers secretly covet because of its affordability, understated nature and versatility.

No coincidence then that Dacia claims this sleek, third-generation Duster to be the ‘best bargain on the market’.

Expect prices to start around £18,000 when the SUV arrives at Arnold Clark dealerships next summer. It’s worth highlighting that the Duster has been Europe’s bestselling SUV bought by private retail customers every year since 2018.

Clearly, the Duster has been at the core of Dacia’s success over the last 20 years or so: the company has sold more than 2.2 million Dusters worldwide. At the Duster plant in Romania, one rolls off the production line roughly every minute.

This new generation is set to lift the standards even higher, introducing new engines — including a hybrid — increased technology, and greater practicality. All that, while still remaining focused on value for money.

The new Duster is an impressive looking SUV. It’s clear it has been heavily influenced by the Bigster concept revealed in 2022. Built on a new platform — the same CMF-B platform which supports the Renault Clio and Captur, plus the Dacia Sandero and Jogger — it’s slightly wider and lower (1.81m and 1.66m respectively) than the model it replaces. Interestingly, it retains the same length at 4.34m.

The result is an SUV which now has an even stockier stance, and whose looks have been further enhanced by the addition of chunky wheel arches, plus robust bumpers back and front. The 2024 model also benefits from an extra 7mm ground clearance.

There are some big changes

At the front, there’s a new look for the grille and headlights: note how the parallel lines across the grille flow into the daytime-running light signature. The rear door handles have now been hidden in the C pillar, plus, overall, there’s a new sleek look, a result of the roofline sloping down to the rear.

Pop round to the rear and you can’t miss the C-shaped rear lights. And when it comes to boot space, there’s another improvement: up from 442 litres in the previous two-wheel-drive Duster to 472 litres.

Dacia’s decision to move to the CMF-B platform will, according to the company, ‘reduce vibration and noise from the road, enhancing driver comfort’, plus ‘it provides a quantum leap in driving pleasure, with an unmatched connection to the road’.

For now, we’ll have to take Dacia bosses’ word for it — we won’t drive the new Duster till early next year.

Will there be a choice of trim levels?

While much of the 2024 Duster remains a mystery, we do know it will be available with a choice of four trim levels. The entry-level Essential is followed by the Expression trim, with Journey and the slightly more offroad-focused Extreme sitting at the top of the range. The car’s software can also be updated over the air, meaning it doesn’t have to be taken to a dealer to download bug fixes and new functions. Inside the Essential, there’s a 3.5-inch media screen on the dash, plus a smartphone holder — Dacia believes customers will use this more often than the screen — Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, cruise control and rear parking sensors.

Next up, the Expression adds a 10.1-inch screen and Dacia’s newly revised infotainment system, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also a reversing camera, a larger seven-inch driver’s display and 17-inch alloys.

Which trim will be the big seller?

But it’s the Journey and Extreme specs which are expected to be the biggest sellers in the UK. Dacia claims that high trim levels usually account for 70% of sales in the UK.

So, what do you get? Well, the Journey includes an electric parking brake, a wireless smartphone charger, an updated sound system, hands-free entry, automatic air conditioning and 18-inch alloys.

The outdoor-focused Extreme benefits from washable upholstery and rubber floor mats in the cabin and boot, plus electric folding door mirrors, sat nav and Copper Brown styling flourishes, both inside and out.

Intriguingly, the most novel interior feature in the Duster is probably a new option called ‘YouClip’.

Fitted as standard — with three clips or five, depending on the trim level — it allows the occupants to fix accessories like a cupholder, a bag hook, a tablet stand, an induction-charging phone holder and a portable torch, all of which will be sold through Dacia dealers.

Tell me about the engines and 4x4?

As for engines, the 2024 model sees the introduction of hybrid and mild-hybrid powertrains alongside a pure-petrol engine. There is no diesel option. The current entry-level 88bhp three-cylinder turbo petrol has been removed from the new range.

Instead, the 2024 line-up starts with the TCe 100 Bi-Fuel, 99bhp four-cylinder engine, which can run on both petrol and LPG, having a 50-litre tank for each. According to official tests, fill both tanks and the Duster will do around 800 miles without stopping for fuel.

The mild-hybrid engine mates a 1.2-litre turbo petrol triple, a 48V electric motor and a 0.9kWh battery. It’s also the only one available with the four-wheel drive system, which functions similarly to the old Duster’s.

Using a simple rotary dial, select Auto and it operates in front-wheel drive most of the time, but diverts power to the rear axle when the front loses traction. One noticeable improvement is that the previous 4x4 Lock mode has been replaced by an off-road setting that actively distributes the torque between the front and rear axles.

Further new tech includes hill descent control, which can be activated in all gears and limits speed to a maximum of 18mph. Compared to the front-wheel-drive models, the 4x4 gains an extra 8mm in ground clearance, making a total of 217mm.

Isn't there a full hybrid version?

Yup. The headline-grabbing powerplant is the Hybrid 140. This pairs a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine with two electric motors – as also available in the Dacia Jogger — for a combined output of 138bhp. Cleverly, its 1.2kWh battery is topped up by regenerative braking and is said to ensure 80% of city driving can be completed on electricity alone.

So, it looks, certainly on paper, that Dacia has nailed the new Duster. We’re looking forward to driving it next year and giving you a full review.
