Facelifted 2024 ŠKODA Scala gets design tweaks and new tech

ŠKODA has given its Scala model a facelift – and it includes a number of tech updates as well as a few nifty design tweaks.

The Scala, a conventional five-door hatchback, has been designed to rival the likes of the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Kia Ceed, and the latest improvements to the ŠKODA in many ways mirror those already introduced to the company’s Kamiq small SUV.

Why is that not a surprise? Well, because both the Scala and Kamiq share the same platform. That means, of course, they also share the same engines and transmissions; plus, they’re both built alongside each other at ŠKODA’s main factory in Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic.

So, what are the main changes?

There are new bumpers front and back, plus a new front grille. And it’s no ordinary grille. ŠKODA’s designers claim it’s intended to make the production Scala look closer to the Vision RS concept that previewed it back in 2018.

What else is new at the front?

There’s a diamond pattern in the mesh of the new air intake, which gives it a more ‘three-dimensional’ look, plus new, slimmer headlights. The options will now also include a box to tick for matrix-LED headlights. Also on the options list is the smart-looking extended rear-hatch glass that stretches down to the taillights.

Anything else?

The final external changes include a new range of alloys. These range from 16 inches to 18 inches and are available in nine paint shades, including three solid colours. Inside the cabin the facelifted model now makes greater use of recycled and natural materials on areas, including the seats and door inlays. And the finish of the interior will now be governed by six design selections — that’s a fancy way of saying curated mixes of colours and trims — as seen on the Enyaq EV.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

What about the tech?

As for new tech, across the Scala range all models now get an 8-inch digital instrument panel as standard. A larger and more interactive 10.25-inch display is again available as an option. There’s also now an 8.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system fitted across the range, with buyers able to tick the option box to upgrade to a larger 9.2-inch panel; this comes with a navigation package.

And while you can now use hands-free gestures to open the optional powered tailgate, there’s also now a plethora of USB-C ports in the cabin. There are, in fact, five, including one cleverly embedded in the rear-view mirror to allow owners to plug-in a dash cam.

Performance?

While ŠKODA is sensibly steering clear of hybrid technology which would force prices up, buyers can still choose from three petrol engines and three transmissions. There’s an entry-level 94bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol, fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox. The main seller is likely to be the same engine, but able to deliver 114bhp, and available with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Sitting at the top of the range is the 1.5-litre unit, delivering 148bhp and again available with a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed auto gearboxes.

The facelifted Scala is expected to go on sale at Arnold Clark’s ŠKODA dealerships early in 2024.

Expect trim levels to remain largely unchanged, with SE, SE L and Monte Carlo versions. ŠKODA has yet to confirm prices but given the relatively minor facelift, don’t expect prices to move much from the current figure of around £21,500.

End of an era as Volvo pulls the plug on its estate cars in UK

It’s the end of an era.

Volvo estate cars, for so long the bastion of families requiring space for a growing family and a cavernous boot to carry all the familial clobber, have been axed in the UK as the switch to electric continues.

The news comes after the iconic Swedish carmaker confirmed it will now exclusively sell SUVs in the UK, meaning the Volvo S60 Saloon, V60 and V90 Estate follow the S90 into retirement.

So, what’s the reason behind the decision? Simple. Sales of the models have dropped significantly in the UK as buyers flock to Volvo SUVs.

In the first half of 2023, almost 25,000 new Volvos were registered in the UK. Less than 10% of the vehicles were estates or saloons. By contrast, SUVs make up 70% of all of Volvo’s 291,000 car sales.

‘We continue to rapidly transform our product offer, which means not only moving towards full electrification, but also shifting to new platforms and technologies across all our cars,’ a spokesman for the company said.

‘We will naturally need to evolve and consolidate our line-up as we prioritise fully electric cars and make this technological transition.

‘As a result, we have removed further models from the UK line-up. These include the S60, V60 and V90. Demand for our existing SUV line-up continues to grow, while interest in our forthcoming fully electric EX30 and EX90 models is strong.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

‘Meanwhile, appetite for our saloon and estate models has fallen to very low levels in the UK, which has led to our decision to remove these models from sale in the UK.’

So, from a business perspective, the decision to pull the plug on the estates is completely logical. But the decision brings to an end to an almost 60-year journey after the P220, or Amazon, went on sale in the UK during the 1960s.

But before that, the first-ever Volvo estate to go on sale was the Volvo PV455 Duett, which launched in 1953. Since then, it’s estimated the company has sold around six million estate cars around the world, including 24,775 sold globally this year.

The bulk of the estates built for the UK market were produced in Volvo’s Torslanda factory in Gothenburg. The firm will now use the capacity for other models. Production of both saloon and estate models will continue for markets where there is still demand, including those requiring right-hand drive vehicles.

But if you’re desperate to stick with a Volvo estate, buyers can still purchase surplus stock through the company’s website or talk to someone at your nearest Arnold Clark Volvo dealership.

The current Volvo range, though, will continue to expand as the demand for SUVs grows across the UK. Worth highlighting, of course, is that their structure and chassis shape are more acceptant of the future requirements of carrying heavy battery packs as we shift to an all-electric new car marketplace.

Today’s Volvo range now starts with the XC40 and C40 Recharge, with the XC60 filling the gap between them and the seven-seat XC90. These will be joined later this year by the new EX30 crossover, with the EX90 joining the line-up in 2024. A successor to the XC60 is due to arrive in 2025.

UK car registration plates, explained

$

0

The new 73-plate will available in the UK car market from 1st September 2023.

And to celebrate the upcoming ‘73’ registration number, we've decided to delve into the history of the UK vehicle registration system.

From the first car registrations to the current system, here's what you need to know about the number plates in the UK.

When is the 73-plate released?

The current number plate is a 23 plate, which was released in March 2023, and will remain the date signifier for all new cars registered between 1 March and 1 September 2023. From 1 September, the UK number plate will change to 73.

The numbers game: the first car registrations

Let's go back to the start.

The UK number plate system was brought in under the Motor Act of 1903, after the government saw the increasing need to identify owners of cars. Registrations were issued by local authorities, and the story goes that the first plate was ‘A1’, issued by the London County Council to the second Earl Russell, who dispatched his butler to stand outside all night to be first in the queue.

While that’s true, the mundane fact is that ‘A1’ was actually the second plate ever to be issued – the first one was the rather ominous sounding ‘DY’, in Hastings a month earlier. However, that hasn’t stopped ‘A1’ from gaining legendary status, and it now adorns a Bentley belonging to the Sultan of Brunei’s brother.

Early UK plates began with one or two letters which referred to the place where the plate was issued, followed by a number between one and 9999.

But the system wasn’t exactly intuitive. ‘A’ was London, and after that, it was anyone’s guess – ‘C’ was Yorkshire, ‘G’, ‘I’, ‘V’ and ‘S’ were used in Scotland and Ireland, and when they ran out of letters for local areas, two letters were used instead.

More cars, more problems…

By 1932, there were more cars on the road than there were digits and letters to support this format. So instead, the convention changed to three letters and up to three numbers.

But by 1950, the government had the same issue and reversed the numbers and letters, and this system lasted for another 12 years.

1960s – 1980s: age is not just a number

By 1962, it was all change again. To make the numbering system more sustainable over the longer term, a letter was added at the end of three numbers. This time, the letter referred to the age of the car, so ‘A’ was used from January 1963, ‘B’ 1964 etc. In 1967, there was a change to the timing with the letter 'E' used from January until July and then 'F' running from August to July 1968, with 'G' arriving 1st August 1968. This format was in place until 1983

There were other changes, too. In 1974, number plates ceased to be issued by local authorities and were centralised to the DVLC in Swansea; now, of course, known as the DVLA.

On 1st August 1983, the letters/numbers/age format was reversed to become age/ numbers/three letters. There was also the addition of a ‘Q’ prefix which was used for imports and kit cars, which is no longer in use. This series ended with a ‘Y’ in 2001.

2001 onwards: the current system

Now, registrations contain seven characters.

Just like the very first registrations, the letters stand for the area in which your vehicle was registered. This is called the ‘local memory tag’. The first letter represents the region and the second is the number assigned to the local DVLA office.

The two numbers after that are an age identifier. New plates come out every six months, from 1st March to the end of August, and from 1st September to the end of February.

Plates issued from March to August always refer to the year. Plates issued after that take the last two digits of the year and add 50. For example, in 2001 it was 51 and in 2020 it’s 70.

This will continue until 2050, when the second set of numbers will reach 00, and there will no doubt be another number shuffle or character added.

The numbers are always followed by a random selection of three letters that make your car uniquely identifiable.

Why do UK registration plates all look the same?

Under the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, all UK registration plates must conform to British Standards. Your number plate must be:

  • Illuminated at night and have a reflective background (although classic car owners are allowed to retain their black plates).

  • Clearly seen, with no bolts/fixings or dirt obscuring the characters.

  • Easy to read, with colour, font and spacing which meets Department of Transport regulations.

  • Positioned correctly with a white plate at the front of the vehicle and a yellow plate at the back.

Any modifications to registration plates – such as italics or different colours – are illegal, and drivers can be issued with a fixed penalty fine of up to £1000, have their registration withdrawn and their car may fail its MOT. In other words, your plates are not the place to be creative – so hold off on the Comic Sans.

However, you are allowed to express your national pride. New rules introduced in 2009 allowed drivers in England, Scotland and Wales to display union flags, St George’s crosses, saltires and dragons on their number plates, along with the letters ‘GB’, ‘UK’, ‘ENG’, ‘SCO’, ‘CYMRU’ or ‘WALES’.

You can also display the EU symbol if you’re planning to drive in Europe, and legally there is currently no obligation for drivers with the EU badge to get replacement plates after Brexit.

Why are certain letters and combinations never used?

There are some letters that didn’t make the cut, simply because they look too similar to numbers. Between 1963 and 2001, ‘I’ and ‘Z’ were restricted as a suffix (and then later a prefix) for Irish use only and and ‘U’ wasn’t used for this purpose due to its similarity to V’. From 2001 onwards, ‘Z’ has been allowed to be used as part of the final three letters on non-Irish registrations.

As far back as the 1930s, when the three-letter format was introduced, some combinations of numbers and letters were taken out of circulation for spelling offensive or inappropriate words. The DVLA is still careful to remove any dodgy combinations or unintentional meanings that that might make the plate sought after at auction. For example, 2018’s classic ‘BR18 ERY’ and ‘RO18 BER’ were immediately ditched. However, as the letter selection is randomised, it’s more likely that your registration won’t spell out an actual word.

What about number plates in Northern Ireland?

Irish number plates are made up of three letters, followed by up to four digits and contain either the letter I or Z.

Combinations of letters are allocated to specific areas in Northern Ireland.

They can be used on vehicles anywhere in the UK, and not just restricted to Northern Ireland.

They are issued by the DVLA, like all UK number plates.

Private and personalised plates

If you really want to make your car’s plates one of a kind, personalised plates are available from the DVLA, via auction or online. When you’ve paid for the plates, you’ll receive a V750 certificate of entitlement to prove that you can put it on your vehicle. Be wary when buying a car with plates like this, however, because they can be used to hide the age of a vehicle.

The benefits of using a dash cam while driving

$

0

When it comes to having a dash cam, there are many benefits for drivers.

They can help reduce your no claims bonus and insurance premiums, they can help you prove what happened in a crash and protect you from any false claims involving the police.

Dash cams have been popular in the commercial sectors for fleets of vans and lorries, along with emergency vehicles, for a number of years. However, until recently their high cost has kept them out of reach for most motorists.

A surge in popularity and big steps in technology have led to a price drop, and a reduction in size of dash cams.

And during Arnold Clark's Big Gift Giveaway event, you can bag yourself a Road Angel Halo Go dash cam.

What is a dash cam?

A dash cam is a video camera that is mounted on the dashboard or windscreen of a car. Generally powered by the car’s 12v system, it continuously records the view of the road and traffic through the windscreen.

How does it store footage?

Typically a dash cam continuously records video footage either on an internal memory or a removable card (such as an SD card). When the memory fills, the camera automatically overwrites the oldest files. So you should be able to set it up then leave it until you need it.

Do I have to tell others that I’m using a dash cam to record?

No. In the UK, if the car is yours and yours alone, and you are not using it for business (such as taxi work), it is legal to use one without notifying anyone else that you’re recording.

How many are in use in the UK?

Latest estimates suggest around one in five vehicles now use a dash cam.

Where’s the best place to fit it?

Fit your dashcam in the centre of your windscreen, behind the rear view mirror. Ensure it does not obstruct your forward vision.

What are the advantages of a dashcam?

As fraudulent insurance claims increase, a dash cam provides vital evidence of what actually happened and who may have been involved. Following a collision or incident on the road, a driver's memory of events or the position and action of other motorists can sometimes be unclear, while a dishonest motorist may be less likely to pursue a claim knowing that video evidence is available.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

Can I save on insurance?

The installation of a dash cam could see a discount (typically 10% but sometimes as much as 25%) from some insurance company, so it is always worth asking what they can offer. By the way, you don’t have to tell your insurer you’re using a dash cam, as it is not considered a vehicle modification.

Can I share my footage with the police?

Yes. You can upload your footage to any police force in England and Wales using the National Dash Cam Safety Portal. There have been plans for a Police Scotland portal but these remain under review.

What sort of offences would be suitable?

Dash cam submissions showing dangerous driving, driving without due care and attention, using a mobile phone, not wearing a seat belt, contravening a red traffic light, contravening solid white lines and other offences where the driver is clearly not in proper control of the vehicle.

Would I need to go to court?

The typical process is that you complete a ‘statement’ when you upload your footage. This involves answering a few pre-formatted questions. Estimates suggest that fewer than two per cent of people submitting dash cam footage have to attend court. However, if you are not prepared for the possibility of attending court, then you should not submit the footage.

Could the footage recorded on my dash cam be used against me?

Yes. If you’re involved in a collision, or are stopped by the police for committing an offence, then officers could seize your dash cam or could require you to present its footage for them to review.

Why should I use a Road Angel Halo Go dash cam?

The Road Angel Halo Go delivers high quality, despite its discreet and compact size.

It is also easy to use and supports 1080P HD loop recording, with its wide angle and rotatable lens.

Meanwhile, you can connect to your mobile phone through built-in Wi-Fi, watch a real-time video preview on your smartphone and download it if an accident happens.

Ten years of Dacia in the UK

$

The ever-evolving automotive landscape is often dominated with premium brands and sports cars.

However, there are not many brands that have managed to capture the imagination quite the same as Dacia.

From humble beginnings to celebrating its tenth UK anniversary, it’s clear that Dacia’s impact and success has been nothing short of transformative.

Very few names in the industry have been able to carve out a niche for themselves, let alone be consistently strong in sales.

As some manufacturers realigned themselves towards the premium sector and eyed bigger sales and larger profits, Dacia decided to stay the course and target the leaner end of the market. That staunch business approach has enabled them to sell more than 240,000 models since launching in the UK in January 2013, and as such, their initial market share has increased from 0.3% to 4.7%, making them one of the fastest growing car brands in the UK.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

It all started in Romania in 1966 when the little-known car manufacturer was born. Its aim? To provide affordable, modern, and reliable cars to Romanians. Fifty years later and under French ownership, the name Dacia not only encapsulates the brand but resonates with the public’s imagination.

Dacia has always had close ties with Renault. Their first model – the Dacia 1100 – was a licence built variant of the Renault 8. In 1999, Renault officially acquired Dacia, making it the third brand under their umbrella. Renault introduced the Dacia as a budget car across Europe in 2004 with the introduction of their Logan model. The first-generation Sandero hatchback followed in 2008 with the first-generation Duster SUV arriving in 2010.

There’s no denying Renault’s investment helped Dacia modernise its production facilities and expand its line-up. When some manufacturers were gradually moving away from the budget end of the market, Renault capitalised on the gap. Coming out of a five-year recession, 2013 saw buyers with a renewed appetite, and, with well-built affordable cars backed by Renault, the timing was perfect. Dacia’s first model brought to the UK was the second-generation Sandero – a small hatchback which offered practicality, reliability, and value for money. It’s popularity quickly won over the public and its success helped establish a foothold for Dacia.

Dacia summed up the brand with its first TV advertisement: “We don’t do frivolity, function’s our thing”. With the new car costing a mere £5,995, buyers flocked to them. The brand’s motto, “You do the maths” succinctly emphasised their thought process behind value for money and performance. This no-nonsense philosophy struck a chord with UK consumers not wanting to break the bank.

The Sandero and its slightly technologically advanced and rugged sibling, the Sandero Stepway, have been mainstream models throughout the decade. However, the first and second-generation Duster model proved to be a more popular model with some 88,000 being sold. The line-up was also joined by an estate model – the Logan MCV, which was based on the Sandero platform.

The second-generation Sandero arrived in 2020 with the Logan model being replaced by the Jogger range in 2022. The Jogger was the first in the line-up to offer a seven-seat option. In doing so, Dacia once again showed itself as a class leader with value for money and price being its primary focus.

With a new badge and logo, 2022 saw Dacia rebrand itself as more of a rugged lifestyle brand. While retaining the attributes which made it popular, Dacia expanded its demographic and appeal to a wider clientele. From first-time buyers to repeat business, year-on-year sales for the brand have been going up, when in comparative terms, some of their competitors have seen a fall.

Despite aiming towards the budget end of the price range, UK buyers mostly choose the top-spec trim levels. Now, while it might be a contradiction, it demonstrates that customers want some tech and comfort upgrades, yet still seek value for money. Due to this, basic spec’d Dacias are no longer sold on UK shores.

Dacia’s journey in the UK has delivered quality alongside affordability. It’s emphasis on practicality and durability has resonated deeply with consumers. Its success is also rooted in its streamlined model range. By doing this, it’s allowed them to fine-tune what they offer, keep things simplistic and affordable and deliver exactly what customers are looking for.

In the meantime, Dacia is taking steps to be environmentally friendly by offering an electric line-up, with the Jogger Hybrid model being the first to be fitted with the latest technology. It uses the same 1.6-litre TCe petrol powertrain as its cousin – the Renault Clio Hybrid. A factor which has helped Dacia go from strength to strength is that it shares platforms and components with the Renault Group. This strategy enables cost savings, while ensuring technology and parts are cutting edge.

When it comes to fully electric, the Dacia Spring, which has futuristic elements morphed with Sandero lines, is already available in continental Europe. The small SUV, which is a rebadged Renault Kwid, features a 27.4kWh battery with an approximate range of 140 miles. The Spring is currently scheduled to arrive in the UK in 2024 and will be joined by Dacia’s latest design SUV concept car – the Bigster and a third-generation Duster. While prices for these models will most likely be slightly higher, given battery and development costs, you can bet that they will still be an attractive option.

The Sandero is a spacious, affordable family favourite hatchback which is the best-selling car in its class. The bigger and more expensive Sandero Stepway is a pseudo-crossover with rugged looks, higher ground clearance and makes up 60% of current UK Sandero sales. Meanwhile, the Duster, which offers versatility and practicality with off-road capabilities, is the second best-selling SUV in its class and now comes as bi-fuel. The Jogger is currently one of the cheapest seven-seaters on the market. It’s practical, spacious, and available as a hybrid. As for the upcoming Spring, it’s an everyday small electric city car which looks to have decent range – light, practical, and reasonably priced.

Prices for a Dacia start from £13,795 or £233 deposit with £233 per month.

There’s no denying that the manufacturer’s remarkable journey in the UK over the past ten years stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment of affordability, practicality, customer satisfaction and value for money.

With some French flare and upcoming models scheduled to arrive, the next ten years look to be as game-changing as the past decade.

Arnold Clark Coachbuilders transform bus into 'first-of-its-kind' mobile mental health and wellbeing facility

Arnold Clark Coachbuilders is delighted to have transformed a bus that will be used to support the mental health and wellbeing of community-based staff in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area.

The first-of-its-kind mobile facility will act as a rest and relaxation hub for workers who are based in different areas of the community.

As well as being a place where workers can enjoy a break and free tea and coffee, staff can also find out more about the mental health and wellbeing services which are provided by the NHS in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area.

Arnold Clark's expert coachbuilding facility in East Kilbride were tasked with converting the bus and were able to carry out a range of bespoke work and body-building requirements to complete the transformation. Production Manager Steve Maitland, project managed the task from initial enquiry ,through design, equipment specification and fit out.

Chris Higgins, Workshop Foreman at Arnold Clark Coachbuilders, said: 'The NHS came to us with the idea that they wanted to put a bus on the road for the staff that don't have mental health and wellbeing facilities in the area that they work in.

'It was just a standard bus when we got it, so we had to strip it down to the bare shell and then take out all the seats and windows.

‘We came up with some different designs and let the NHS pick what they were looking for.

'The bus will allow them to take the bus to staff who are looking to use the amenities that are available on-board and take a break.

'All the work was completed in-house and it took us about six months. It went through various processes, from painting, electrical work and, of course, the conversion.

'A lot of different departments were involved, and it's so rewarding to see how it has turned it.'

The vehicle was donated by Stagecoach Group and Arnold Clark Coachbuilders, with the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Healthcare Charity providing the funding for the full fit-out of the bus, which will provide a range of facilities for our community-based staff.

Once on the road, our new bus will be supported by volunteers from Health Improvement, Human Resources and other support services that currently deliver wellbeing help to our staff.

Anne Macpherson, Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, believes the converted mobile bus will be hugely welcomed by staff.

She said: 'As part of our approach to staff mental health and wellbeing, we've installed rest and relaxation hubs at our main sites.

'We then got feedback from community-based workers who were looking for similar types of services, so we thought it would be great if we could provide a mobile wellbeing service that would serve all staff.

'Through our Transport department, we found out about our partnership with Arnold Clark and it's been a great collaboration. The end product is fantastic!

'We use buses as mobiles sites for things like blood donations, but we believe this mobile mental health and wellbeing bus is the first of its kind for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

'Particularly as we head into the winter, it will give our staff, especially those who are community-based, a place where they can meet other staff and get support if they need it.'

Lisa King, a Practice Development Nurse for care homes in Renfrew, added: 'The bus will be very beneficial to staff.

'It will be great way of keeping staff informed about some of the services which are provided.’

2024 Mini Cooper EV unveiled

Mini has lifted the wraps from its new Cooper Electric that will now be capable of covering up to 250 miles on a full charge.

Forming part of what is the fifth generation of the iconic hatchback, the 2024 model will be available as both a full-electric or petrol version. It will also only be available as a three-door.

Unveiled at the 2023 Munich Motor Show, the latest Mini gets a new design and added tech, including a brand-new infotainment system.

The 2024 Mini Electric will be available in three trim levels, Classic, Exclusive and Sport. The entry-level Classic includes black synthetic leather sports seats with a knitted textile interior. The Exclusive’s knitted textile trim on the dash panel is a two-tone houndstooth pattern, while the sports seats benefit from a perforated trim. There’s also the option of what Mini calls a “Spray-Tech” roof; this blends three different colours.

The range-topping Sport trim gets black synthetic leather seats with contrast red stitching, multi-coloured knitted textiles, plus more gloss black for the car's grille and logos. Naturally it’s the raciest-looking in the range, and its sporty looks can be further enhanced by adding a contrasting roof and bonnet stripes.

Petrol and electric models available, plus prices

While the petrol model will follow later, the first to arrive will be the new electric Mini which will be available in two forms: Cooper Electric E and Cooper Electric SE. There’s also three new exterior colours, Blazing Blue, Sunny Side Yellow and Legend Grey. With first deliveries scheduled to arrive in Spring next year, prices for the Mini Cooper Electric E start at £30,000, with the Cooper Electric SE rising to £34,500.

Sharing the same dimensions, but not the same platform as the petrol model, the Mini Electric E is fitted with a 40.7kWh battery which sends its energy to a single electric motor. This delivers 181bhp and 290Nm of torque, and covers a claimed range of up to 190 miles.

The Cooper Electric SE sees the battery capacity rise to 54.2kWh, with power and torque increasing to 215bhp and 330Nm respectively. Delivering up to 250 miles on a single charge, the SE will cover 0-62mph in 6.7secs, that’s six tenths quicker than the Electric E. Both models can be charged at 75 and 95kW respectively; which means a 10% to 80% recharge will take 30 minutes.

New minimalist look inside and out

The Mini designers have focused on a more minimalist look, removing chrome, making the door handles sit flush, and removing the wheel-arch trims. The big circular headlights — offered with three different LED running light signatures — remain, plus there’s a new octagonal front grille. The rear lights are now even more customisable: you can have the familiar Union Flag signature, or a choice of other modes.

The EV’s larger wheels have been pushed further out towards the car’s extremities, resulting in even better packaging and space inside the cabin. With the rear seats in place, bootspace has now increased to 200-litres, increasing to 800-litres with them folded flat.

Inside the minimalist cabin, which in many ways better reflects the original BMC Mini of 1959, the centrepiece of the new car's cabin is still a large round display. Originally a large speedo, it’s now a 9.4-inches in diameter ultra-slim OLED screen. This will be standard fit across all models.

Labelled the Mini Interaction Unit, it displays EV data on the state of charge and range available, all the customisation options, plus speed and media.

Plus there’s more new tech

The 2024 Mini will also run a new OS9 operating system (based on Android software). As a result, owners will be able to select different themes from the menus which change the look and feel of the screen and interior lighting.

Included in the Mini Experience Modes are Go-Kart, Personal, Timeless, Core, Green and Balance. Select ’Timeless’, and you get a digital depiction of a classic Mini speedo on the central screen. Even more intriguing is ‘Personal’, which allows users to first upload a background photo of their choice. The system will then detect the main colour from those that feature in the picture and extend this across the screen to better tie in the image.

Each Experience mode will also be accompanied by a corresponding soundtrack. While ‘Core’ creates a sound which is audible inside and outside the car to help warn pedestrians, ‘Go-Kart’ produces a “pronounced pitch and fall” sound. Interestingly, the ’Balance’ sound “is based on the noises heard in a forest at different times of the day and night, from the rippling of a stream and the chirping of crickets to the rustling of the wind in the treetops.” Not sounds you hear every day in a car.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

Mini designers have also ensured that the cloud-based sat-nav's map can be displayed in the centre of the Interaction Unit. And owners who opt for Mini’s native nav set-up get the reassurance of a “charge-optimised” routing function.

Available to order now from Arnold Clark’s Mini dealerships, the first 2024 Mini Electric models will be available for delivery from Spring next year.

2024 Mini Countryman gets electric option

$

Not content with unveiling the 2024 Mini Electric, the carmaker has also just revealed the latest version of the largest member of the Mini family, the new Countryman.

This third generation of the SUV has not only grown considerably, but from early next year will be available with the choice of petrol and electric drivetrain options, the latter with a range of up to 287 miles.

Set to be pitched against the likes of the Audi Q3, this latest Mini Countryman is 60mm longer and 130mm than its predecessor, essentially as a result of being twinned with the latest BMW X1. Mini bosses emphasise the growth in the size of the Countryman will leave a gap in the line-up for the forthcoming Aceman crossover.

And being an evolution in design from the generation it replaces, rather than a revolution, the 2024 Countryman mirrors styling cues first seen in next year’s Cooper, including the octagonal front grille and revamped headlights and taillights.

The minimalist approach is again carried over from the new Cooper into the cabin, where the dashboard is dominated by an identical touchscreen. The Countryman’s growth in size sees the introduction of an enlarged centre console, which now houses larger cupholders.

The increase in the SUV’s length also means there’s an extra 130mm of leg room in the rear. The rear backrests are also now individually adjustable, plus there’s a slight improvement in the bootspace which now measures 460-litres with the rear seats in place, rising to 1450 with them folded. There’s also the ubiquitous underfloor cubby for storing the EV’s charging cables.

Buyers will be able to choose from three petrol engines, which are likely to be two 1.5-litre turbo three-cylinder units, plus the 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder from the X1. The entry-level Countryman C delivers 167bhp to the front wheels only; the S All4 has an output of 215bhp, naturally going to all four wheels; while the range-topping John Cooper Works All4 (JCW) gets 296bhp. It’ll hit 62mph from standstill in 5.4-seconds.

Those eager to go down the electric route will have the choice of two versions. The Countryman Electric E delivers 201bhp to its rear wheels via a single motor, while the dual-motor, four-wheel-drive Electric SE All4 gets 309bhp. Both are powered by a 64.7kWh battery, producing a range of 287 and 269 miles respectively. The battery can be rapid-charged at rates of up to 130kW. As with the 2024 Cooper hatch, both petrol and electric versions of the Countryman will be available in three trim levels, plus eight Mini Experience modes.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

Finally, it’s worth highlighting the new Countryman will be the first Mini to be available with level-two driver assistance, including hands-off driving at speeds of up to 37mph.

As for prices, the petrol Countryman starts at £28,500 for the C, with the S priced from £33,900, rising to £39,900 for the JCW. The entry-level Electric E costs £41,500, with the range-topping Electric SE priced at £46,600.

Available to order now from Arnold Clark Mini dealerships, first deliveries are scheduled to start in February 2024.

Arnold Clark announces sponsorship of the English Schools’ Football Association

Arnold Clark is proud to announce the sponsorship of the English Schools’ Football Association (ESFA) U16 – U18 National Schools’ Cup competitions.

Since its formation in 1904, the English Schools’ Football Association has been the national governing body for schools’ football in England. As an educational orgnisation, the ESFA is responsible for the running and development of schools competitions at primary and secondary school age – generating playing opportunities for around 700,000 children across the country each season.

With deep-rooted values in education, the ESFA works hard to create equal and inclusive access to the sport. It also values the importance of football in the classroom as much as on the pitch – rewarding individuals who choose to remain in mainstream education and build secure foundations for themselves with qualifications.

Arnold Clark's new partnership will see the Group sponsor ten ESFA Cup competitions and support thousands of schools’ football players on their journey to become national champions in 2024. The Arnold Clark Schools’ Cup title will cover all U16 – U18 Schools’ Cup competitions, including three girls’ competitions.

Almost 1,800 teams are currently entered into these competitions for the 2023/24 season and it seems likely that the ESFA will reach, if not surpass, entry figures from 2022/23, which was the biggest season in schools’ football history.

Through our sponsorship, we hope to raise awareness of the competitions across England and help to elevate these National Cup competitions to a new level.

Eddie Hawthorne, Arnold Clark Chief Executive and Group Managing Director, said: 'We are very proud to announce this sponsorship of the English Schools’ Football Association.

'At Arnold Clark, we strongly believe in thinking beyond our company and giving back to the communities we serve and support, and football is something that brings the whole community together.

'We’re delighted to have this opportunity to sponsor this year's National Cup competitions and look forward to watching the game's future stars in action.'

Hyundai Kona Electric 2024 review

$
0
0

When Hyundai first launched its Kona into the UK market back in 2018, it became an instant hit.

First developed as a multi-powertrain small SUV, an electric version soon followed. Now this second-generation Kona has been developed with much of the attention focused solely on the EV version.

Across Europe, 40% of Kona sales are electric, so clearly the improvements in technology, plus newly updated styling and more interior space are key to ensuring continued success.

While the latest Kona will be available with a choice of internal combustion engines, we’re focusing on the new electric offering.

What trim levels are available…

Worth mentioning right from the start that the new Kona now benefits from a much roomier cabin, thanks to the fact it now shares its underpinnings with its Korean sister, the Kia Niro EV.

In fact, the Kona is now 145mm longer than its predecessor, including 60mm extra between the front and rear wheels. The result is more of a mini-Hyundai Tucson look. The second-gen Kona is available with a choice of four trim levels; the entry-level Advance is followed by the N Line, N Line S and Ultimate. Standard kit is impressive, with all models getting dual 12.3-inch displays, a reversing camera, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and 17in wheels.

If you fancy a sportier look, both inside and outside, opt for the N-Line duo. Not only do they have a better presence on the road, but the spec adds new tech, including a wireless smartphone charger and powered tailgate. The Ultimate goes a number of steps further, introducing a sunroof, an enhanced Bose sound system, leather upholstery, enjoys extra driver assistance systems and has a full-width LED strip adorning its nose. Plus, it also sits on 19-inch alloys.

… and powertrains?

From launch buyers will have the choice of two powertrains. There’s the entry-level 48kWh battery and 154bhp motor, which is best suited to those who don’t require a huge range and are governed more by budget. The smaller battery delivers 234 miles, is available only in Advance trim and starts at £34,995.

Those who prefer a combination of more power and range will opt for the 65kWh battery and 215bhp front motor. With a range of up to 305 miles, prices for the larger battery start from £38,595. The range-topping Ultimate trim starts from £43,095.

The new Kona Electric is fitted with a heat pump, so mileage ranges shouldn’t plummet in winter.

Plus, both power units can charge at up to 102.3kW, meaning a 10%-80% top-up will take around 43 minutes. If you already have a 7.4kW home wallbox, that should fully charge the battery within nine hours.

Performance?

Sprightly. Even the entry-level 154bhp version, which sends its power to the front wheels via a single-speed transmission covers the 0-62mph sprint in 8.8secs. The larger 215bhp 65kWh version knocks a second off that time. Both are restricted to a maximum speed of 104mph.

What’s it like inside?

Pretty impressive. Unlike the first Kona, this version has been designed first and foremost to be electric. That means a greater feeling of more space within the cabin and a welcome increase in areas to store odds and ends. It never feels cluttered.

Gone too are much of the shiny, scratchy hard plastics which were prevalent in Hyundai models from just a few years ago. This looks and feels more upmarket, more premium. There’s a soft-touch to many of the materials now.

Unquestionably, the cabin is dominated by the twin 12.3-inch screens. These stretch out from behind the steering wheel and sit comfortably above the centre console. And hallelujah! Unlike many other manufacturers, Hyundai’s designers have retained knobs for key functions like climate control.

Anymore tech?

Yes. The Kona Electric comes with a new interface which has configurable widgets which are easier to navigate. There’s also an updated version of Hyundai’s Bluelink connectivity and companion smartphone app, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard kit. Also, navigation with EV route planning — which incorporates chargers into your journey if you need a charge to reach your destination — is also included, even on the entry-level Advance trim.

The option sheet includes a Comfort pack. Tick the box and you’ll get a heated steering wheel, heated front and rear seats, wireless smartphone charging pad plus tinted rear windows.

Bootspace and storage

One of the biggest improvements to the new Kona Electric is the practicality of its packaging: there’s just so much more space and the Hyundai designers have maximised its use.

Your odds and ends can be stashed in numerous storage cubbies and bins, plus of course there are the inevitable cupholders. There’s also a large central storage compartment between the front seats, and remember there’s no transmission tunnel, so the floor is flat. The benefit of that is felt most in the back where, if you do have three rear seat passengers, they won’t be fighting for footspace.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

With Vehicle-to-Load included, with a three-point-pin adaptor passengers will be able to power external devices like a computer … or even a fridge! And if another EV’s battery is running low, you can give it a power boost from your car’s battery.

Bootspace has increase significantly, up from 332 litres to 466 litres. Fold the Kona’s seats down and that shoots up to 1300 litres. At the front of the Kona, under the bonnet, you’ll find something akin to a plastic engine cover. Thankfully it has a hatch which, once opened, reveals a a small storage compartment ideal for storing the Kona’s charging cable.

So, what’s the verdict?

If the first-gen Kona was deemed a success, this latest version will only build on that reputation. More grown-up than its predecessor, it also benefits from some of the charm first associated with the hugely successful Hyundai Ioniq range.

Throw into the equation more cabin space, even better exterior styling, plus the entry-level price of the smaller battery version, and the Kona Electric is sure to appeal to buyers making the switch to EVs.

BMW i4 eDrive40 M Sport review

$
0
0

If you’re unfamiliar with BMW’s ‘i’ range of cars, most are effectively the all-electric equivalents of their traditional petrol and diesel range.

So far, there are six of them (ten, if you count the ‘M’ models separately) ranging from the standalone iX SUV to the 7-Series counterpart, the i7.

The i4 was the original and, you guessed it, it’s pretty much an engineless 4-Series Gran Coupé.

Apart from elongated kidney grilles, which divide opinion, it looks just like any normal road car. And you’d be hard pushed to tell there wasn’t an engine under the bonnet.

The i4 features ‘electric blue’ decals on the grille and the “exhaust” surround (not that there is an exhaust) as well as down the side on the entry-level Sport version. But, apart from that, there’s little to give the game away.

The Sport model includes 17-inch alloys, a 14.9-inch infotainment system, SatNav, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display. It also boasts a Harman Kardon surround sound system, keyless go, leather steering wheel, wireless charger, electrically adjustable sport seats and door mirrors with memory function. Plus, you get ambient interior lighting, LED lights, three-zone air conditioning and a glass roof.

The M Sport model is the same but with more aggressive external bodywork, a leather ‘M’-style steering wheel and 18-inch alloys. But on both models, you can choose between 17-, 18- and 19-inch alloys – at a cost if you’re increasing the wheel size.

Both are rear-wheel drive, with the eDrive35 model producing 286PS and the higher-powered eDrive40 outputting 340PS.

There is also an ‘M’ version called the M50 with 544PS.

The car tested here is the eDrive40 in M Sport trim, which manages 0-62mph in 5.6-seconds (0.4-seconds quicker than the eDrive35 model).

Along with nearly all electric vehicles, the power delivery is instantaneous upon pushing the accelerator.

As a result, the BMW feels pacey, although the additional 54PS over the eDrive35 doesn’t necessarily offer much additional performance in practice.

It handles well, but, being an electric car, the weight of the batteries makes it feel heavier and less nimble than a petrol-powered BMW, with more understeer on the way into a corner.

As you continue around the bend, the rear-wheel drive picks up the momentum and helps to turn.

Ride comfort, even on the largest optional 19-inch wheels, is refined, so those opting for the standard 17- or 18-inch options should have no issues.

If you’re moving from a fossil-fuelled M Sport, you might be disappointed with the handling, but it more than meets the needs of most. And it successfully achieves the difficult blend: a car with keen driving dynamics which is also relaxing to drive.

As a result, long-distance cruises make for easy work and, thanks to quality soundproofing, you’ll be gliding along peacefully, even when flooring the throttle.

The i4’s stopping power impresses, too, with predictive regenerative braking. This tech can adjust the braking system’s ferocity automatically by using the SatNav to predict the speed needed to navigate the next bend.

Curiously, the i4 features a composition soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, the man behind the music to Pirates of The Caribbean among many others. It provides an electronic ‘engine note’ which is clever but, unlike in most cars, it’s not attempting to replicate the sound of a petrol-powered motor. Some folks won’t like it, and it can be turned off if you want relative silence.

The interior of the i4 looks as normal as any other BMW, so the minimalistic, futuristic aesthetic of some electric car interiors isn’t found here. That is no bad thing, as people who are moving to an i4 from a regular BMW will instantly feel at home.

That said, the digital instrument display (known as Live Cockpit Plus) and the infotainment screen (known as BMW Curved Display) are housed in one unit, which sits behind the steering wheel like an ultra-widescreen tablet.

The system is the latest evolution (version 8.0 to be precise) of BMW’s famed iDrive system. It remains the industry leader, offering crisply clear graphics, informative and intuitive layouts and plenty of customisable features.

Voice control works well, which is a relief, as the air conditioning controls are on the touchscreen, which would otherwise make it a fiddle to adjust on the move.

The seats are comfortable and, from the driver’s perspective, there’s plenty of space to spare. Meanwhile, electronic seat adjustment makes it easy to find a suitable driving position, which you can then save via the seat’s memory function.

The roof slopes down towards the rear, which slightly reduces the headroom in the back seats. But, overall, it’s not bad and at least there’s plenty of legroom on offer.

Despite appearing to be a saloon (BMW insists it’s a coupé) the i4 is technically a hatchback, given how the boot opens.

This makes the 470-litre cargo capacity easily accessible. And, even more conveniently thanks to 40:20:40 split-folding seats, it expands to 1,290-litres – around 50 litres more than a Tesla Model 3.

All i4s include an 83.9kWh battery capable of a 10-80% top-up in just 30 minutes at a charging speed of 210kW. But few public chargers manage that speed at the moment, while Tesla’s own exclusive network charges at a rate of 250kW.

A range of 347 to 365 miles is claimed in the i4 M Sport driven here, while the Sport version will achieve 337 to 352 miles, although expect less than this in practice. Also, savings are to be found in benefit-in-kind tax, which means the i4 will appeal to company car users.

The BMW i4 was crash-tested in 2022 by Euro NCAP and only earned a four-star rating. This score may not sound bad, but BMW will be disappointed given most of their cars are able to earn five stars.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

It scored 87% for both adults and children and 64% for safety assists – lower scores than the 3-Series and the 4-Series coupé. But this may be explained by Euro NCAP making its testing criteria more stringent in the meantime.

The i4 includes automatic emergency braking, forward and rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, plus adaptive cruise control.

Driving Assistant, which uses radar and camera systems, is also offered as standard. This technology can be upgraded to include steering and lane-control assist, parking assist, traffic light detection and wrong-way warnings.

Overall, the i4 retains BMW’s reputation as a class-leader when it comes to refinement, luxury, gadgetry, and practicality.

Its handling is good, albeit not on a par with petrol models, while it retains a decent level of ride comfort despite large alloys.

Those whose only mission is to experience the thrills of driving may be tempted to wait to switch to an electric car. But for what it is, the first iteration of the i4 confirms that BMW isn’t heading in the wrong direction.

But she couldn't believe it when she was announced as a winner.

Louise said: 'I get a lot of emails, and mostly are spam, but when I saw one from Arnold Clark, I decided to keep it. When it said I had won, I checked the app and it was confirmed!

'I never play the lottery or anything like that, so to win this and the cost of my car back is amazing!

'I've managed to pay off my car and give some money to my son and his girlfriend towards a holiday to Copenhagen.'

Alex, from Leeds (January 2023 winner)

Alex was using his app to book in his next MOT when he saw a notification that he’d won the cost of his car back.

He said: ‘Probably, like everyone else, I didn’t believe it at first. I wasn’t even too sure what I’d won at first.

‘Once it was confirmed, I was delighted and couldn’t wait to tell my partner. It’s like winning the lottery!

‘We’ve just bought a new house together so this money will really help!’

Suzanne, Wishaw (November 2022 winner)

Our first winner, Suzanne, is part of Cat Concern, a small charity, which was set up in 2011 and helps rescue, neuter and rehome stray, unwanted, abused and abandoned cats of all ages.

Seven stunning cars unveiled at the 2023 Munich Motor Show

It's Europe’s biggest motor show - and it certainly didn't disappoint this year.

The Munich Motor Show 2023 took place earlier this month, with many of the automotive industry's leading names seizing the opportunity to unveil their latest electric offerings.

From Mercedes-Benz to BMW and MG to BYD, some stunning new cars and concepts were unveiled at the biennial IAA Mobility show.

Here, we look at just some of the exciting new cars that were on display.

MG Marvel

MG are fast becoming a consumer favourite when it comes to electric cars.

As part of their second generation of 100% electric vehicles, they've revealed a new compact SUV - another favourite for motorists - and it looks the real deal.

Described as spacious and luxurious, the MG Marvel has a WLTP range of 250 miles.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

BYD Seal

Arnold Clark became the exclusive Scottish retail partner of BYD earlier this year.

And the Chinese brand, also known as 'Build Your Dreams', have already unveiled their ATTO 3 and Dolphin.

The Seal is next to follow and is a versatile four-door sedan that comfortably seats five people.

With a battery capacity of 82.5 kWh, as well as a sporty and dynamic design, the Seal boasts an extremely impressive range of 350 miles.

BMW Vision Neue Klasse

The BMW Vision Neue Klasse, translated as 'new class', made its debut in Munich.

The latest concept showcases what the next generation of vehicles from BMW will look like - and it's certainly a change thanks to a much sharper design.

“With the Neue Klasse, we have embarked on the biggest investment in the company’s history,” says BMW chief technology officer Frank Weber. “We are not just writing the next chapter of BMW; we’re writing a whole new book.”

Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class

Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class arguably took centre stage at the motor show.

The range will comprise a total of four new models — a four-door coupé, an estate, and two sports utility vehicles.

Claiming to boast an incredible 466-mile range, the Concept CLA Class features powerful wheel arches with distinctive 21-inch wheels.

On the exterior, there's a shark-nose front-end design, while on the inside, Mercedes-Benz looks to offer the driver a 'fully digital experience'.

Volkswagen ID GTI Concept

The German carmaker used the motor show to show off their plans for GTI versions of its ID electric cars.

Volkswagen plan to launch 11 new all-electric models by 2027.

MG Cyberster

With its unusual taillights, scissor doors and long sloping bonnet, the all-electric MG Cyberster is sure to be a highly anticipated sports car in the UK market.

Drawing inspiration from the company’s heritage, Cyberster’s bold styling combines a contemporary design with distinctive touches that call on MG’s rich history as a renowned manufacturer of exciting, engaging convertible sports cars.

Cupra Tavascan

The brand’s first all-electric SUV coupé provides enough capacity for a range of around 341 miles and can add an additional 62 miles of range in as little as seven minutes.

The Tavascan also features a 15-inch infotainment system – the largest so far in a CUPRA model.

Salon Privé, Blenheim Palace 2023

This year’s Salon Privé, the 18th, and the eighth held on the stunning grounds surrounding Blenheim Palace, once again delivered an eye-watering selection of world firsts and iconic classics.

While centre stage was the Yellow Collection of rare cars totalling more than £30 million and parked carefully on the hallowed cricket pitch belonging to the Duke of Marlborough, visitors were spoiled with the choice of new hypercars and diminutive electric cars.

Here’s just a selection of some of the cars with turned heads at this annual automotive extravaganza in Oxfordshire.

Theon Design 911

Oxfordshire company Theon Design revealed its latest bespoke Porsche 911 (964), and its first commission for a UK customer. Finished in iconic Slate Grey, it's the same colour as Steven McQueen’s iconic 911 in the film ‘Le Mans’.

Created to represent the pinnacle of the enhanced air-cooled 911, the carbon-bodied GBR001 features ‘visual’ carbon bodywork elements, warm chrome brightwork and wheels, semi-active suspension, and a pleasurably raucous 3.8-litre naturally aspirated flat-six.

Taking a Porsche 911 (964) as its base, in this case a 1990 C4, the donor car was taken back to bare metal before restoration was started. The body is all carbon (aside from the doors which remain steel for side impact protection) with each panel digitised and modelled in 3D design software to ensure a perfect fit. These carbon body panels add stiffness and shed weight, meaning GBR001 tips the scales at just 1163kg with all fluids.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

Not surprisingly, the same care has been lavished on the air-cooled 3.8-litre engine – a flat-six work producing 390bhp at 7350rpm and 290lb/ft at 6000rpm. With over 100bhp per litre, GBR001 packs the highest specific output of a Theon commission to date.

Of course, as you would expect, such standards don't come cheap. Prices for Theon Design commissions start at £380,000. Each car is a totally unique collaboration with the customer and takes 18 months to build. Oh, and worth just mentioning, that price doesn't include the donor car, shipping, or local taxes.

Ferrari 250 LM

The star exhibit in the £30 million Yellow Collection, which took pride of place on the Duke of Marlborough’s personal cricket pitch at Blenheim Palace, was this stunning 1965 Ferrari 250 LM that famously led the Le Mans 24 Hours for 23 hours in 1965 ... before suffering a puncture. The incident opened the door to its sister car which went on to take the win (fortunately, it still finished second).

How significant is this car? Well, we all know that Ferrari won this year's 'Centenary' Le Mans, but the last time the Italian supercar maker won the 24H race was back in 1965, when this 250 LM finished second in the hands of the Ecurie Francorchamps racing team.

The 250 LM was launched in 1963 as a coupe version of the 250 P, which was a response to the FIA's new prototype class in the World Sportscar Championship. It was the first time a V12 was mounted in the rear of a Ferrari sportscar.

Electrogenic 1929 Rolls Royce

As the world's leading car manufacturers are beavering away to create the new generation of electric cars, internationally renowned British EV technology company, Electrogenic, took the opportunity at Salon Privé to unveil its latest stunning bespoke conversion; a show-stopping 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II with coachwork by HJ Mulliner & Co., converted to clean all-electric power.

Commissioned by a private collector, it is thought to be the most complex classic car EV conversion yet completed. The company has sympathetically modernised this piece of British motoring history. One of just 1681 Phantom IIs crafted between 1920 and 1935, it now packs a whisper-quiet, effortlessly powerful electric powertrain, featuring Electrogenic’s proprietary EV technology.

The car was originally powered by a gargantuan 7.7-litre pushrod straight-six, producing between 40 and 50bhp, bolted directly to a four-speed, non-synchromesh manual gearbox, with a claimed a top speed of ‘well over 80mph’.

Now, the petrol engine and gearbox have been carefully removed, replaced by 93kWh of batteries which have been carefully integrated into the existing structure of the car. The batteries feed an electric motor mounted between the chassis rails via a custom single-speed direct drive transmission, delivering 150kW and 310Nm of torque to the fixed reduction gear, which in turn delivers 1000Nm to the prop shaft. The systems are all seamlessly linked and managed by a bespoke suite of software, all developed in house by Electrogenic’s software engineers.

Inside the Rolls-Royce, Electrogenic was careful to retain the wonderful original features of the beautifully patinaed leather and wood lined cabin. The original controls have been repurposed and the standard gauges have been creatively re-worked. The fuel gauge, originally a vertical sight glass, is now an LED state of charge gauge; the amp meter is a power gauge, showing the rate of power draw when accelerating, and power harvesting under regen; oil temperature gauge shows charger temperature, and the water temperature gauge shows the temperature of the electric motor.

The modernisations also extend to the audio setup: the cabin now houses a state-of-the art, high-end multi-speaker HiFi system, with integrated sub-woofer under the rear seat and full Bluetooth connectivity. All of this is discreetly hidden from view.

And the eerie, wonderful thing is, as this big beast of a car glides passed you ... it is completely, and utterly silent.

Totem Automobili

Making its exclusive UK debut at Salon Prive, Totem Automobili lifted the covers from its headturning Totem GT. Inspired by the classic Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA, the new Totem GT presents “a new aesthetic and technological concept of Gran Turismo”, according to Totem Automobili founder, trained automotive designer Riccardo Quaggio.

The Italian company has spent several years crafting and perfecting the design and, finished in carbon fibre, there's no doubts it was one of the stars of the show. Hand-built, there are two versions available.

The Totem GT Super has an all-new 2.8-litre twin-turbo V6 engine, the most compact and lightweight such powerplant ever. A dry-sump design with a unique two-stage supercharger, it offers 600hp in Stage 1 guise, or a thrilling 750hp in Stage 2 form.

The Totem GT Electric is the zero-emissions alternative, producing more than 500hp for 0-62mph acceleration in just 2.9 seconds. It has an 81kWh battery, allowing a range of at least 295 miles, and offers the excitement of launch control and exciting ‘drift engine braking’ that uses the regenerative braking to initiate a drift.

The Totem GT Electric also feels and sounds authentic. This is aided by a comprehensive external sound system comprising 13 handmade speakers, capable of delivering up to 125db.

Just 20 electric and 20 petrol models will be built. As for prices. Think €600,000.

Electric Bentley Blower Jnr

Making its European debut at Salon Privé, the Bentley Blower Jnr is an 85% scale recreation inspired by the 1929 Team Car No.2, the world’s most famous, valuable — it's insured for £25 millon — and iconic Bentley. All-electric, with a 61-mile range and a top speed of 45mph top speed, the Bentley Blower Jnr is fully road-legal in key global markets including the UK.

Created by Bentley Motors and The Little Car Company, the 20hp Bentley Blower Jnr will seat two adults in tandem, and has dedicated luggage space to boost its city centre credentials. Built entirely by hand, it uses authentic materials to match the original 1920s car, and the 99 First Edition cars will be colour-matched to the legendary 4.5-litre Supercharged original. The Bentley Blower Jnr still has a supercharger mounting too, only here, it’s used to house the charging port.

Measuring 3.7 metres long and 1.5 metres wide – similar in size to a Fiat 500 city car – the new Bentley Blower Jnr isn't cheap: it'll set you back around £108,000 in First Edition guise. Expensive, yes, but considerably less than the £1.8 million charged for the similarly hand-built full-size Bentley Blower Continuation cars.

Clive Sutton Shelby Cobra CSX10000

There was a world first at Salon Privé when Clive Sutton unveiled the first ready-to-go UK turn-key Shelby Cobra in almost 60 years, the CSX10000. Marking 100 years since the Carroll Shelby’s birth, the Cobra CSX10000 is powered by the five-litre Coyote V8 from the current Ford Mustang. In naturally-aspirated form it produces 460bhp and 420 lb/ft of torque, but with an optional Whipple twin-screw three-litre supercharger the engine delivers an astonishing 700bhp and 550 lb/ft of twist.

Standard fit is a six-speed Tremec manual transmission, while new 18-inch wheels, designed to replicate the original Cobra’s 15-inch rims are also installed. Chunky Continental Extreme Contact Sport tyres are 275/35ZR18 are sized at for the front and 335/30ZR18 for the rear.

Power steering and Wilwood power-assisted four-calliper brakes provide stopping power, while the cabin is trimmed in diamond-stitched leather. Its gauges are based on the very first Cobra.

Available in left- and right-hand drive, every CSX10000 sold will be recorded in the Shelby Cobra Register, recognising it as a genuine car, not a replica. Prices start at £195,000.

Ferrari Purosangue

When is an SUV not an SUV? Apparently, when it's the Ferrari Purosangue. The Italian supercar company's first ever four-door, four-seater model, according to Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna, is not actually an SUV. “It’s unlike any other car,” he said. “It’s a sports car opening a new segment.” Right. That clears that up then.

The Purosangue is 4973mm long and 1589mm tall, making it only slightly shorter and lower than the Lamborghini Urus. By comparison though, the Ferrari’s bootspace is 473-litre, compared to the 616-litre of the Lambo.

But let's face it, if you're buying a Purosangue you're not going to be all that bothered by its bootspace. Performance is what this is all about. Under the clamshell bonnet sits a new 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine producing 715bhp and 716Nm of torque ... all without even a hint of electrification. Power is fed through an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox (with the first seven having deliberately short ratios) to the rear wheels. But a power transfer unit can shift power to the front wheels to give four-wheel drive if needed.

As you would expect, it's no slouch. From standstill, 62mph comes up in just 3.3-seconds and the Purosangue will max out at 192mph. Price? Yours from £313,120 ... but you're likely to be closer to £400k by the time you've ticked the options list.

Lotus Eletre

Lotus returned to Salon Privé with a wide range of cars. But its star attraction was its new Eletre electric Hyper SUV. A 'Hyper SUV'? Why so? That'll be because it's a 4x4 with at least 603bhp.

Available in three trim levels, with prices ranging from £90,805 to £121,305, all models have the same 109kWh battery under the floor, running at 800V and able to charge at rates of up to 350kW. The generous 373-mile WLTP range is aided by a competitive aerodynamic rating of 0.26Cd.

Measuring 5.1-metres in length and 1.6m tall, it's also available as a four- or five-seater. The base car and the S trims get the same 603bhp via two 302bhp motors, one at each end, with open differentials. Top speed is 160mph, and it'll cover the 0-62mph sprint in 4.5sec. The R meanwhile gets a bigger rear motor with 603bhp for a 905bhp total.

Lamborghini Islero S

Of all the classic cars on show, my own personal favourite was the stunning, bright yellow Lamborghini Islero S. The successor to the Lamborghini GT 400, the Islero originally debuted at the 1968 Geneva Auto Show. And it's a rare beast. Production of the 2+2 Coupè stopped after just 225 models, of which the last 70 were put on the market in 1969 with a few changes to the body and luxurious interiors in the Islero S version.

Powered by a 325bhp Lamborghini 3.9-litre V12 engine — as was also used in the 400 GT, Miura, Espada and Jarama — the Islero was fitted with a Lamborghini-designed five-speed manual transmission was equipped with synchromesh and a hydraulically operated dry clutch. Top speed was 154mph and 0-62mph could be covered in 6.4 seconds.

The Islero S, however, had its engine tuned to 350bhp, with the torque figure remaining the same as its sister car. Benefitting further from tweaks to its rear suspension, the S had a top speed of 161mph and shaved 0.2 seconds off the 0-62mph time.

Thinking of making the switch to electric?

The space-saving high-voltage battery is located in the underbody and provides an energy content of 81.2kWh.

In addition to the efficient electric motors, the latest version of adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, the drive and high-voltage battery contribute to its long range.

BYD Dolphin review

The ban on the sales of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK has been delayed five years, from 2030 to 2035.

But the growing popularity of electric vehicles is showing no signs of stopping.

And I got my hands on what promises to be one of the best, most affordable all-electric cars to hit the UK market: the BYD Dolphin.

Perhaps worth mentioning here, Arnold Clark is the sole dealership platform for Scotland.

The Dolphin is the smallest and cheapest of the three models the Chinese carmaker will introduce into the UK. While the ATTO 3, a small SUV, has already made an impression, the larger Tesla 3 rival, the Seal, will arrive later this year.

But for now, I put the Dolphin to the test; and it’s an impressive package delivering a bigger battery range, in-car tech and solid build quality. For those people who have long highlighted that EVs were either far too expensive, or that the smaller, more affordable options didn’t have a long enough range, the new BYD bursts those bubbles.

Looks good, but what size is it?

It’s a decent size. Get the tape measure out and you’ll find it’s 4,290mm long, 1,770mm wide and 1,570mm tall. That means it’s more than capable of accommodating four six-footers in equal comfort.

BYD chose not to highlight specific rivals, but the reality is it’ll go head-to-head with the likes of the MG4 hatchback, plus the smaller Vauxhall Corsa Electric and Peugeot e-208. And to be honest, its size and versatility will also pitch it against the latest version of the upgraded Volkswagen ID.3.

Doesn’t that mean it’ll be expensive?

No; quite the opposite. The Dolphin is available in four trim levels. The entry-level Active starts at £26,195, with the range-topping Design priced from £31,695. Sandwiched in between is the Boost, priced from £27,195 and what’s likely to be the best-selling model, the Comfort which starts at £30,195.

PCP terms are available at £299 per month for Comfort and £329 for Design, each with a £3,000 deposit.

Ok, let’s get into the nitty-gritty: range?

Ah, yes. The benchmark by which all EV models tend to be judged. And here the Dolphin again doesn’t disappoint.

The base model gets a 45kWh battery and a 93bhp electric motor that’s good for 211 miles on a full charge. Next up is the Boost which keeps the same battery, but ups power to 174bhp.

The Comfort and Design step up to the larger 60kWh battery and a 201bhp front-mounted motor — the same combo as that featured in all ATTO 3s — and boosts the range on a single charge to 265 miles.

Performance and charging?

The 60kWh pack charges at a maximum of 88kW from a suitably powerful DC charger, with BYD claiming 30%-80% in 29 minutes. Just worth highlighting here that while that sounds certainly good, main rivals claim similar times starting at 10%.

Standard charging is 11kW AC, which means that if you’re charging from home or work on a three-phase supply, the speeds will still be good.

If you go for the smaller 45kWh battery pack, charging speeds fall to 60kW DC or 7kW AC; but the 30%-80% rapid charge improves by a minute.

Another positive is that all versions get Vehicle-To-Load. That means you can run electrical devices — laptops, hairdryers, a kettle, or even, as BYD did at the launch, power a large music deck (I know … it was a car launch!) — from your car. What you can’t do though is charge another EV.

Cold weather range is also boosted by the fact across the four models a heat pump is standard-fit.

As for the standard 0-62mph ’sprint’: you’re looking at 7.0 seconds, which is swift enough for most people.

What’s it like inside?

Pretty impressive. As I mentioned previously, there’s loads of space both in the front and rear. Both head and legroom are better than you might expect when you view the Dolphin from the outside. It has this canny knack of looking smaller than it is when, in fact, it’s a tad longer than the ID.3.

And don’t misinterpret ‘affordable’ for being ‘cheap’. The cabin has struck this very clever balance of definitely not feeling cheap, but not quite hitting the premium quality level. It’s an appealing middle ground which will meet the demands and expectations of most potential buyers.

All the switches have a solid feel to them, and the areas with which you interact have all the right levels of padding.

Design-wise, the cabin is a step up from the ATTO 3. You’ll notice that gone are the slightly bizarre ‘guitar strings’ from the door storage areas and replaced by conventional door pockets. Progress.

Again, the fascia is dominated by BYD’s central 12.8-inch infotainment display. And yes, it still rotates between portrait and landscape layouts. Personally, I think it’s a bit of a gimmick. It works perfectly well, and more efficiently in landscape, rather than the Tesla-esque portrait where it actually slightly obstructs the view out the windscreen.

More importantly, the tech behind it is quietly efficient, outperforming what you’ll find in the Peugeot, Vauxhall or, even, the Volkswagen. And things will get even better as BYD will issue over-the-air updates.

Trim levels?

Even the base model gets the rotatable infotainment screen, plus 16-inch alloy wheels (17-inch across the rest of the range) and vegan-leather upholstery. Comfort adds heated front seats, front parking sensors and slightly faster charging.

But if you can stretch the extra £1,500, Design is my preferred choice. Not only does it add a full-length panoramic roof, rear privacy glass, a wireless smartphone-charging pad and two-tone paint, but you get the most stunning, comfortable two-tone sports seats. That said, sports seats are standard across the range… but they do look stunning in the two-tone vegan leather.

Boot space?

Hmmm… to be honest, it’s a little on the small side. But that’s a simple by-product of BYD maximising the cabin footprint to maximise interior space for occupants.

Luggage space is 345 litres, with the rear seats in place. In fairness, plenty big enough to accommodate a week’s shopping. Boot space rises to 1310 litres when you fold the rear seats down.

And what’s it like to drive?

Pleasant, probably sums it up best. Forget applying the barometer of ‘driver involvement’. Just judge the Dolphin for what it is: a cleverly packaged EV which will do the job more than adequately for the vast majority of owners who will drive the car.

Steering is reassuringly direct and that, married to the accomplished ride ensures the cabin is a pleasurable place to be. Even if you chuck it into a corner, the Dolphin will gamely retain grip, enough, most likely, to put a smile on the driver’s face.

Important also to highlight that while the launch cars were fitted with — bear with me on this — LingLong Comfort Master tyres, the first cars to be delivered to UK customers will actually be fitted with Hankook tyres. That will only further improve the grip, ride and comfort.

Verdict

If ever there was a car which highlighted why you simply shouldn’t write off a Chinese car manufacturer, it’s the Dolphin. Not only does it have an attractive interior, but it’s comfortable, handles as well as the vast majority of its drivers will ever want, delivers pace and a range which meets daily requirements… and is affordable, when compared to some of its rivals.

To put that into perspective, prices for the Peugeot e-208 only start where the Dolphin prices top out. As for the Volkswagen ID.3? Well you’d need an extra £4,000 to get the entry level.

Take a good look at the pictures of the Dolphin, because I’m pretty sure you’re going to start seeing a lot of them on our roads.
